ROOTOR, COPE, SHOES, Farnisli SANTA CRUZ. 19- AND OLAHH. stances of the sickness and death of brother Peter MtPhorson. He had lived alone on his Monterey comity fsrm for seven years, gathering about Dim the bachelor comforts of life. This farm Is located seven miles be yond San Antonio, three miles this side of Jolon and one-half mils' back of the publlo road, the home being within ear distance of two bachelor neighbors.

Two weeks before bis death, and to finish harrowing a 40. acre field of grain, Peter had worked In the rain. He caught cold and became so hoarse as to speak hardly above whisper. Getting no better he came to the San Antonio hotel, where be remained one week, footing It lo his home tbe Monday before bis death. The postmaster of the place where he stopped aaya be could not sleep and ate but one or two meals while at the botel.

It was suggested that he come to Santa Crux or write to his relatives here, but he declined to do ao, aa he considered his trouble only temporary. Shortly after bis return to Ins ranch a neighbor, a Mr. Moore, seeing his inability to pump water for bis stock, went to bis relief, doing the pnmping for him. Mr. Moor suggested to bim that he was quit sick and bad better do something for himself.

The answer was that he would soon be all right, But Mr. Moore was not satisfied, and probably the next Red the people of Jolon of Peter's sickness. J. Beasley, a neighbor and whose brother, and two nieces taught a private school In the building now owned and occupied as a res idence by J. Blum of this city, went to his cabin, preparing such relishes as an old bachelor best can.

Peter was about every day. Thursday, tbe an niversary of Wsshlngton's birthday, In the evening of tbe day in which Peter died, died when alt was so cheer ful here, Mrs. George Dutton and another lady visited the dying man's Tiome. They gave him gruel, which ha could not eat. They wanted bim to let them write to Santa Crux.

He said no, that be would soon be well and write ail about his sickness himself. The arrangement was that Mr. Beasley, when be had finished his chores, would come and spend the night. It was near seven o'clock when tb ladle bid Peter farewell, he assuring tbem that felt better. They bad hardly crossed tbe field to their buggy, which stood two hundred yards distant, wbeu they beard five dis charges of a gnn.

Beasley a ss ear ing th bouse from an opposite direc tion wben the explosions were heard, and fearing that the sick niau had lost his mind and had shot at bim or committed suicide, he hastened to where the ladies and three other men were. Nona of them would go near the house. It was near aeven o'clock and dark. A blacksmith said that the gun discharges were sig nals for help and that he would go to th relief of the slak man. Mr, Moore Joined him and the two started When near the bouse they heard two more gun shots, and thinking that they bad been fired at, fled.

All hurried to Jolon. Not satisfied, they sent two miles farther for Justice Whit look. They arrived at the house at ten n'olook. Peter, fully dressed, leaning against tbe building and sit ting on the projecting underpinning, his gun lying across his lap and clenched in both bauds, bis bead rest ing on bis left shoulder and project ing beyond tbe building, was found, dead. They supposed he was asleep, When last seen the deceased was sitting In his rocking cbair, and apparently without thought of death.

The probabilities are bat after the ladles left bim he felt that the final moment was near at hand, got up, went out doors, stood up against the building, discharged bia breeoh-loadlng rifle five times, the charges ranging upwards that man nor beast might be inlured, ss the powder on the building indicates. When be stood four empty shells wen foond. Pausing for a reply, for oompany and relief, be sat down, fired twice mors and died, the mind losing its thought and tbe heart Its pulsa tions. He must have died without a struggle, and probably of pneumonia. Death is terrible, whether It cornea to tbe mother of tbe new-born babe, the conqueror ou the field of battle or in consumption's ghastly form, and bow sad to think that this brother, denied the privilege of speech, should be misunderstood when be signaled for help, dying alone in tbe twilight, with bia last word unheard, men and women near bim, but who wen afraid to make their presence known.

Peter HcPherson during bis life- Urn seemed to be destitute of caution. He hesitated at no risk when desire directed. He left Santa Crux ou account of catarrhal troubles. His health in this particular wss much belter at Jolon. He was never beard to com plain, and seemed to thoroughly en- Joy himself In living alone.

All la for the best, but could be have come to Santa Crux instead of turning his steps bomewsrd from Sen Antonio, or had bis neighbors been with him wben be fired for companionship, the comfort thst comes of knowledge of last momenta would be left to the liv ing. Tbe remains wen brought to Santa Crus for iutermeut, the services being perrormea uy uie tteva. Thomas and WUletLat two o'clock Last Monday afternoon, tbe procession marching to tbe Odd Fellows' Cemetery, when the last services of the surviving were psid to tbe dead. Tbe troth makes all Milan Main. In tbe Railroad Commission, ou Mon- dsy last, it was ehsrged that tbe people of Kern an ao oppressed by tbe railroads that they cannot profitably raie produce to ship, and hence have to breed Mock to drive to market.

Now comes Manager Towns and aaya to Irrepressible Footer "Not ao see, the truth is that in 1882 there were shipped from Sumner, Of rati) ponmls of sheep. Of hose If hay Of Of pound pounds loJiSl pound 7.lii pounds Of train iabMM) pounds With large shipments of like products pounus rom otner stations in Kern county. And yet tide water is 282 miles from Sumner, bat tbe rat on grain is 1 cents par ton per lull to ude water, or 60 per cent, leas than from San Fable to San Francisco, when there I competitive transportation by water, and though San Pablo la seventeen times nearer to San Francisco than la Sumner." What aaya Commissioner Foot to tills? Tbe new teacher of politicians, bis ex-Excellency Irwin, prods him in tbe aide, and Mr. Foote bounds up and exclaims: "I don't believe it -it ain't so. Your figures an wrong." Very well; 11 is out, and th burden le on tbe Commissioner to establish bia statement or retract 11 drum.

There will lie a contest over Irwin a confirmation as Harbor Commissioner. Tbe Senate Apportionment bill is a device In favor of the Democrats holding over. The Renale Committee on Hospitals reported In favor of legislating Boards of Health out of office. A resolution to investigate acts of officers and employees of the Assem bly is directed against Sergoant-at-Arms Farrelly. Senator Knight, of Santa Cruz, so says an exchange, Nvas compelled to return to bis home last Saturday, he having been attacked by a painful illness the previous day.

Assemblymsn Barnes, of Solano county, has been ousted and the position declared vacant. As the close of the session is so near at band, it is not likely the Governor will call a special election to fill the vacancy. In tbe senate a couple of days ago a sweeping measure was introduced declaring the offices of Harbor Commissioners, Board of Health cf Sau Francisco snd Port Warden vacant. The Democrats an going for Republican scalps with a vengeance. A bill from the Senate Committee on Education amends tire present Act, under which tbe Hastings College of Lsw waa established, by transferring the control of that Institution from the Board of Directors to the Board of Regents of the Bute University.

There was quite an excitement at tb Golden Eagle Hotel the other morning. Senator Cronin, Sergeant- at-Arms Farrelly and several others bad been playing poker all night, and about 6, a. all banda pretty full of whiskey, Cronin accused Farrelly of cheating. The latter gave the lie to Cronin, who drew a pistol and fired at Farrelly, the bullet passing just above bis head and entering tbe wall. No arrests.

The latest aeusatlon in legislative circles has been caused by a move ment in progress to place Laura De Force the lady lawyer and promulgator of tbe doctrine of women's rights. In tbe Assembly seat made vacant by tbe unseating of Barnes of Solano. Should tbe champion of her aex be awarded the vacant seat, she would not be allowed to vote, but would simply bsve the privilege of addressing the House on ny and all questions, of introducing bills, etc, aud last, though not least, of drawing a per diem. It is alleged that no one can procure a bill from Sergeant-at-Arms Jim Farrelly, of the Assembly, without pay ing for it; that that official Is selling complete files of bills for 15 to $-0 each. His lack of common politeness has rendered bim odioua on all aides, and several of the members who have been subjected to gross Instills at his hands an deploring their misfortune lu haviug voted for him.

He Is further charged with spending the great er portion of the day in "the well" in the basement of the Capital, Instead of being at his post. senator Mouiure has introduced a bill to prohibit a burial of the dead within ths corporate limits of a city, which provides that after January 1, 188(1, dead bodies shall not be buried within the limits of any incorporated town or cl.y. Each city shall have power to purchase lands beyond the corporate limits, to be used aa burial places. Each city may provide at its respective cemetery a cremation fur nace, or more than one, if necessary, in which dead bodies shall be reduced to ashes when no objection thereto is made by the next of the kin of the deceased. Tbe Sacramento Bee says: "On the pay-roll Is the name or T.

A. Cullen, porter of the Sergeant-at-Arms, 3 per day, who does not perform that duty, yet his warrant is regularly drawn. H. Davis, ooinmlttee-room porter Is down for 3 per day; his warrant Is regularly drawn, but be renders no service whstever. B.

Kosminsky, who has the cider and apple stand in the corridor, was assessed 1R0 by the Sergeaut-at-Amis. Several committee clerks, who are absent, and have been for many daya, aud who have performed no duties, are atill on tbe pay. roll, their warrants regularly Issued, and it is a questiou what becomes of them." Carver vs. ftto-ardns. Louisville Feb.

23 In the pigeon-shcottng match between Carr-er aud Uogardus yesterday, tbe for mer was tbe winner. They used tame pigeons, winch did not tly well. Uogardus failed to scon on the second bird, which fell dead outside the llni its. Carver missed the fifteenth and sixteenth, and Bogardus missed the nineteenth, scoring a tie. Wben the fiftieth bird was reached, there was tie, each having killed 43.

At tbe ssventieth Bogardus bad CO. Carver i7. At the seventy-nnb Bogardus bsd 81 and Carver 61. From the seventy-fifth to tbe ninetieth Carver gained three and tied Bogardus. At tbe ninety-sixth bird Borardua missed and Carver ran out, defeating hia autsgonist by oue bird Carver 83, Bogardus 82.

To-day the two men signed articles for another pigeon match at Chicago, March 3d, tbe same terms as yester- dsy. Bogardus saya he was beaten by bard luck, soveral of iiis birds fall ing dead Just outside the bounds. sea Lester. Ed. New York, Feb. 28. Professor Rockwell, of the party of scientists who leave here Friday lu the Acapoluo for Panama, thence to Callao aud thence to tbe Caroline islands, to observe the eclipse of May 6th, says: "From Callao the party will be takeu by the United States frigate Hartford straight to tbe Caroline inlands. 4.500 miles across a desolate stretch of' water. We hop to reach the islands by tbe 2Cth of April.

It 1 alleged that tbe French expedition will come to New York, go thence by rail to San Francisco and take the Australian steamer to Tahiti, and there a gunboat will be placed at their disposal, and wben all la finished it will bring tliera lo San Francisco, and from there they will go home. Fur sale by all Drugglsls and Dealers Benotally. (jroceries-frowis hATI RleAY. MARCH IWtS. UWCAJr -EDITCa Tli California Legislature Is dying.

Le die. It might well never have been born. Like Ha Republioan spent It time In uaeieu wrangling. Every ene of lie Senators propose to bold over, clearly in violation of the ConMituUon of tb State. Nearly all tbe racket the preaeut Legislature ha made about corruption on the part of Republican officials, is a mere blind.

Tliey wished to direct attention away from themselves tbst they might the more readily displi Republican Senators and Assemblymen. They have carried ont the iniquity with a boldness seldom quailed. We du not regret this act from a poliUoal standpoint. In fact, we rejoice thereat. We bar beard a good deal of bosh about civil service reform.

Mauy Republicans have tried to carry the theory into practice. Governor Perkins went so far as to appoint Democrats to office, thereby disgusting Republicans who had voted and worked and spent their money to place him in power. He pursued tbe exact course that tends to break down party organisation. Did bis course 'conciliate th Democrat? Not in tbe least. It only fattened and made wise his appointee, who smiled on bun while their party was in the minority, and kicked him after it came Into the majority.

We an glad of their eon' duct, and only regret that the Democrats bav not tbe power to displace every Republican State official. We believe that the victory belongs to the victors, and that the spalls go with tbe victory. That Is what maintains party organisation, and a contrary course on the part of it leaders has gone far to let down tbe party ties of the Repub licans. War we In office, elected by tbe Republicans, not a Democrat should bav a mouthful out of the public crib. Were we eleoted by tb Democrats, no Republioan would need apply.

There is quite sufficient ability In either party to fill the place and at tlie oak. Why then taks an ene my into your household, turning over to him tbe safe keys and eomlri nations and family secrets! Many people are willing and anx bus to distort fact into a falsehood, Immediateley after the telegraphic dispatch bad been received that young Bottarfield bad been found dead In bia bed, these distortionists aald be had been found in his bed murdered that tbe "cow-boys did It, and they knew all about th "oow-boya," bow tlioy popped people On going to the telegraph office It was learned that no second dispatch bad been re ceived, but people outside of th city retailed th murder with great gusto. Senator Eulgbt bad not been well for several days. This was ad mltled. His wife went to him at the Capital on th date of tbe anniversary of Washington's birthday.

Thursday night nut sotn one started the report that he was paralysed. A little lower on tbe street tb report bad him dead It was only by calling on the Santa Crui telegraph operator that th fact aval established that these reports were pure fabrications, so far an known here. We expect the doctor will llv to be at Sacramento two years hence, and trust that Instead of being par alvsed, be paralysed the senate by one of bia apt speeches, aud that tbe death of tbe dying Legislature, over wblcb there will be little mourning, gave foundation to the report of death. Ths ordinance petitioned for by signers wss fur lbs location of a awitcb lu from of the premises of A. Brock, J.

One of such signers, aud who signed the petition asking that no awitcb ordinance granted, Slid at th time that be was opposed laying a switch in tbe business portion of Santa Crux; aaya be aigned the petition asking for a franchise, because one of the parties before whose property tbe switch wss to be laid, asked him as a personal favor to do so, as wauled it ao located.

Now It does not signify that aid aiguer would sign petition In favor of the ordluanc passed by the Council week airo Monday night. Iu fact, tiiero is no evidence on record at tb City Hall that a single lot owner on Pacific Ar. or resident of this city, beyond the Pacific Ar. R. R.

the corporation asking tb franchise, wants any aucb general aud aweeplng ordinance passed. Tbe petition against a switch is signed by tboae opposed to' lb location of switches anywhere In Pa, ifloAr. It is better to be wis In a man's old age and declining years, than to blunder to the end of life. It took a long lime to make th people of Santa Cms fully understand that there was neither beauty, health nor utility In 'perpetual ahade in the equitable and moist climate of Santa Crux. But they bav about eooia to such conclusion, and go where yon will in this beautiful city and you are cheered by tbe handiwork of th trimmer.

The streets on tbe north side of the trimmed trees are dryer, the homes are th grass greener, tbe flowers brighter, and the queen of the nmn and the little ones more healthy, cheerful and happy. Give us aun. light, and glr it to us all day long. Henry C. After standing st the foot of Market for about ten or fifteen looking as It were for more boarders for the hotel, which they did not get, started, and in ten minutes we arrived at the danged placo, called by them tbe hotel, and 1 was dissatisfied at first sight. Well supper was ready, aud 1 was almost wolfish hungry, so I went Into a place to wash, which was called the wash-room, and dang me if 1 did not smell worse than a tannery vat full of four-weeks-old hides. I had a poor supper for my jaws, and got very tired it was called by the rest of the eater9, that well scented salt beef or horse or mule or something else, I don't know which as the bread seemed to be, cakes made of sand aud ceiling wax, for if they weren't hard euough to knock a man down with I am the biggest faliiUer iu America. Afler supper there uaj a clod-bod sweeper of a giant sire stopped up to mo, aud says he, "I am the proprietor," and handed me a cigar. "Well," says after taking the cigar, "I suppose you want the damage fur the supper I had." "Oh, no," said he, "you can pay it all at once whou you are ready to leave," aud oil he went, for he saw I was relishing the cigar be gave me, and it did really taste good, for It was the first one 1 had a wbilT at since 1 left Omaha.

Here the scene changes. The next thing I knew was a yell, seemingly up-siairs, and that I was just woke up from a long sleep, and a devil of a rush for the stairway, and to save me I could not make out head or tail, for I was altogether bewildered, and next I heard a voice saying, "Lay up thero two of you and loose the foretopsall, ami the rest staud by to haul out the sheots." Already came a voice from aloft, and then 1 heard about four or five voices singing out "Haul away, haul away, up high, up high, haul away," etc. It was not until theu tlial I felt a swaying, and also at that lime a large bed bug came to investigate, aud he soon was a lifeless creature lying on the floor. The rocking was uuw becoming greater, and I began to think the devil had ma sure, for I nevor beard such a noise as that before. Finally I crawled out of my nest and went tip-stairs, and as I was ascending I saw the center of the clear sky, and also things that looked like dead pine trees, and theu I stopped and soon knew where 1 was.

That was the first dayllghl sight I had of that place, for It was after dark when the traiu got to Oaklaud. Says I to a pleasaut looking fellow, "How is this that 1 am here and who brought mo here?" "Indeed," uiy friend says, "I can't tell you anything nbout'il, for this Is the first time I ever saw you." I asked him, "How soou is this vessel leaving," and he told me "In six days," so I had some hopes yet. I told the man all ubout it, and asked him how I could make my escape, and be put me ou a good plan. He said that the men who took me to the hotel, as they called it, were land-ahurks, and that I was siiang-haed, and lie might as well talk in Latin, for I knew nothing of land-sharks and shunghaeiiig. Well, he told me he would do all he could lo get mo on shore, so he told me to keep, cool, and I did, for this was about ten o'clock, and I went back to my bunk again and slept there until four, and at that time he told uie he had It tilled all right and asked me if I had any money, aud I told him I had not, so he gave me one dollar and fifty cents, and told me it would cost me four bits to be takeu ashore.

Now I was to the height of uiy glory, and at eight a small boat came under tho bow of the vessel, and my man told me how to arrange it, and I obeyed him with many thanks and a shake of the haud, and into the boat 1 lowered myself by the chains, and soon was at the wharf feeling like a new man, but was out a good watch and chaiu, a teu dollar ring, flfteeu dullars iu cash, a good hat aud a pair of twelve dollar boots, so now you see how I was initialed, and would advise nobody to take a cigar from anybody but a real friend. I am now in the redwoods In Santa Cruz county, and I think It is the grandest place between the Pacilio and Central Pennsylvania. Chables Wakbinqton. First Causes. Ed.

sentinel: First causes are never great. Tlie beginning of a great thing is always small, poor, insignill-caut. The earliest formulated beginning of a millionaire la a beggatly oue cent. The beginning of a cent is one mill. The beginning of one mill is one atom of copper dust.

Tbe be. ginning of an atom is the little something no fellow can find out; but as it Is less tbau an atom it is a very small beginning. The beginning of each man is not only small, but, to the Ignorant, It is ridiculous. What is tbe beginning of your lire? It is a xoosperm. And what la that? A zoosperui is a microscopic poilywog which by a capricious, not to say highly ridiculous course of conduct, is brought into contact with a very small egg.

This polly.woggled egg being hatched out brings to public life a grub. This grub lu course of time becomes a sort of serpent or sn alimentary canal with a hack-bone. This alimentary canal with the back-bone goes through several other beastly changes uutll we find it lu its mother's arms a darling little baby to be the Presideutof the Culled States or his wife. Take anything you please for an example aud the first cause the beginning will be found small; almost pitifully small. Take the railroad as a case.

It beginning was a wooden wheel on a wooden axle rolling on the ground. Take steam its beginning is a Heck of fog. The steuin engine a tea-kettle. If then everything that we know comes from a small be. gluulng, why may we not assume that those things, whose origin we do not know, come also from small causes! Correct reasoning, it would seem, should lead in that direction.

If so, we have a logical right to claim that the "great first cause" of the universe, like all other beginnings, was mighty small matter. TIIK 1'AKSON. Molasses Candy We have nice Syrups.
