York Daily Record, Tuesday, December 9, 1975 13 World Council Of Churches fc 'K 5 Move To Condemn Soviets On Religion Tabled leaders are killed off. Our churches (unlike those the West) dont allow rock and roll to be played in them And our churches are not trying to sell empty buildings because of lack of worshippers Mctropolitah Juvenal said the amendment was premature judgement and unchristian In resolutions passed Monday the council expressed its deep concern that the United States and European govern ments were involved in nuclear collaboration with South Africa and said outside interference in Angola posed a serious threat to world peace The council also urged the United States and Russia to impose an arms embargo on the Middle East and deplored the widespread use of torture and imprisonment by many The debate on religious freedom in Russia was the most heated Snd emotional of the three-week fifth assembly of the council. Speaker after speaker from Soviet bloc countries took the floor to urge the assembly to throw out a suggested clause in a resolution expressing concern" at restriction on religious liberties in Russia Supporters of the clause accused the Council of sweeping the Russian question under the mat, of having one standard for criticizing Western nations and another for Russia, and facing a credibility gap over the issue The Rev Alexei Stoian of Moscow, in an apparent reference to the assassination of Martin Luther King said, We thank God we have not reached the stage where our religious Latin American governments The assembly, which ends Wednesday, has been meeting for nearly three weeks to review church and political developments in the last seven years and plan policy for member churches in some 100 countries until the next meeting in 1982, possibly in South America The resolution on the iddle East said the crisis there can only aggravate the threat to world peace and in an amend ment tagged onto the draft during floor debate, urged the United States and Russia to halt all arms shipments to the belligerents It said the Geneva peace conference should be reconvened soon and this should necessarily involve all parties concerned, including the Palestinians NAIROBI, Kenya (UPI) The World Council of Churches, after a heated debate and vehement protests from official Russian Orthodox delegates, Monday beat back a move to condemn publicly reported religious harassment in the Soviet Union. The move, in the form of an amendment to a resolution on the recent Helsinki agreement on security and cooperation in Europe, was referred back to committee for further study Soviet bloc churchmen branded the proposal dangerous, unchristian and Western victimization You came here to judge us, to put us in the position of victims, shouted Russian bishop Leonid Makary to delegates at one stage "You have no right to judge us Only we have the right to judge ourselves ork Area Deaths Roomers Approved In Top City Residential Zones to RSI because they understood the new designation would make no change in the district After the ordinance was adopted, some persons only then learned that roomers were restricted as they had not been before It is felt that persons in the area who now have roomers and who can meet zoning restrictions regarding space and parking tan continue to keep roomers under a certificate of non compliance" from the zoning hearing board Mrs Walter Traub Funeral services were-held Friday in Omaha, Neb for Mrs Ruth Traub, 83, wife of the Rev Dr Walter Tiaub, pastor emeritus of Koutze Memorial Lutheran Church of Omaha and a former pastor of Christ Church, York Burial took place Saturday at Sunbury Mrs Traub died Tuesday at her home, 8405 Indian Hills Dr Omaha, after a lingering illness Her husbands York pastorate was from 1922 to 1931 Also surviving are two sons, George and Stanley A Traub, both of Omaha, three daughters, Mrs Lee (JanPt) Burhans, Findlay, Ohio, Mrs Phillips (Vera) Cooper, Casper, Wyo Mrs James (Ruth) Dunkel Jr, Farmington.
