CONDUCTOR GARDNER INJURED. Injured in Freight Wreck West of City Early Wednesday Morning. Conductor Gardner who lives at S04 West Tenth street, and Brake-man William Yount, of Osawatomie, were loth Injured In a wreck of freight train No. 157 between here and Peering Wednesday morning at rbout 0:30 o'clock. As the train was coming in from Deerlng it broke and when the rear end again struck the frcnt part of the train it came with such force that a wreck was caused.

Conductor Gardner received severe injuries, his back icing dislocated, but it is thought that he will recover. Yount's injuries were not so serious, but he received a number cf cuts and ter named are notified that the un dersigned, T. F. Burke, T. S.

siNCLAia's Enrollment Large and Increasing Cther Matter cf General School Interest. Superiarendent W. M. Sinclair made hl3 report to the board of education at the meeting Monday night for the sixth month of school, the substance of which is as follows: Enrollment ....2745 Daily attendance 1923 The enrollment for the same period (luring xrevIous years was 2527 in 1006; 2182 la 1905; 1756 in 1904; 145C 1S03; 1CC5 in 1902. In his report Mr.

Sinclair accounted for the falling off of the average attendance over the preceding months of this school terra. lie said that the smallpox kept a great many out and that on account of the peculiar weather there were many who bad the la-grippe. The early spring also wa3 the cause of some of the boys staying out ind working In the gardens and tleanii.g up yards, and that there were all rr.anner of excuses sent in uor the alsence cf different ones. The report says: ''There are teachers who teach some things a great OVal better than they do others but tills will be the case as long the teachers are required to teach so many different branches and the need of department work Is to be seen from this result. "Tho cemmenwmeni committee has made good progress in com-mencemen. matters and have decided t'. have four orations from the class and to have some distinguished person to address the class and the public. Governor Hocu and Hon. G.

W. Winans of Hutchinson hav each been given an invitation to make tho address and it is net yet known which can come. "It ha 3 teen decided to charge an admission of 23 cents for all thoso who attend the exercises except the members of the family of the different graduates and others such as the members of the school board both present r.nd past and the wives of the numbers of the board. The exercises will be held-in the auditorium of the high school building on Friday niht, May 10. i A City Institute.

Tho committee reported favorably on a city institute and the board adopted the report. The Institute will be opened May 13 and will close on May 21 The teachers' examination will follow on May 23. The election cf the teachers lor the coming year will held on May 28. The board appropriated $100 the institute expenses and a fee cf. $2 will Le charged each teacher who attends and they are urged to take advantage of this Institute, which will give many things that are very necessary for city teachers and which cannot be gotten in the county institutes.

The session is to te held in tho school building and it wiTl open each morning at 8 o'clock and close at noon. There will bo two lectures week, four lectures in all. Lectures in Auditorium. This request was granted providing they keep' the room in good shape r.nd paid Rr lighting, heating and the cleaning of the room.

Cn Manual Training. The committee appointed to inspect thvj manual training departments in the surrounding cities made their report, as follows committee to investigate the advisability of adding manual training to tho course in our high school, recommend that we add mechanical drawing. joine-. turning and domestic science, thieving that these subjects will tend to keep the boys and girls in school through tho high school course, an I that the hand and eye should bet rained, as well as the mind to make the perfect man or woman. And further recommend that the rules and regulations bo such that the pupil? taking any of these subjects shall keep up the other work in high standi: Instructions wero Issued to the janitors in the McKinley and Whlt-ticr huntings to make certain needed repairs.
