Raleigh, N. Aug. themselves with rage at what they conceived to be grossly erroneous rulings while umpiring the RaleighGoldsboro ball game this afternoon, (150 or more Raleigh fans set upon Umpire Seymore Johnson, some shouting that he be lynched or beaten to CAN'T SHAKE -TWO. death. He was gotten away from the angry mob only by the most heroic effort of Constable D.

R. Byrum and Rev. Sylvester Betts. The game had gone to Goldsboro 5 to 4. There was all manner of kicking at decisions, empty bottles and other missiles being hurled at the umpire at times from the bleachers.

At the first demonstration against the umpire after the game Constable Byrum undertook to protect hack was gotten to a side gate, the umpire, constable and Rev. Sylvester Betts got in but before the driver could get away the crowd was upon him. There were attempts to drag Johnson from the hack, rocks and bricks were thrown, three struck the umpire, one in the back. The hackman feared that his vehicle would be demolished and on its being The constable was getting another hack alongside to take umpire in and get away but Rev. Betts caught an opportune minute, seized the reins and dashed off with Johnson.

At the same time Constable Byrum drove off in another direction with the other hack. The crowd thought Byrum had the object of their wrath and they chased him while Rev. Betts made good the escape of the umpire. The Raleigh Game. Raleigh, N.

Aug. a game characterized by kicks against the the umpire and rather poor playing all round, Goldsboro defeated Raleigh this afternoon 5 to 4. Score: Goldsboro 020 000 030-5 Raleigh ...000 400 000-4 6. 2 Stoehr and Frazier; Brandon and Rowe; time umpire Seymore Johnson. Luyster Batted Effectively.

Wilson, N. Aug. Railroaders steamed into town this afternoon and were gladly welcomed by the Tobacconists. It had been heralded forth that the visitors would open the series with Luyster, the no-hit pitcher, and he was in the box alright enough but the locals cracked him all over the garden for eight safeties. Cowell was the big boy in the diamond, allowing only five hits.

The visitors drew first bloow making their only score in the third inning. In the fourth, Wilson busy when Armstrong landed a peach of a hit against the fence, scoring McGeehan and Mills. Two more were made in the fifth when Miller hit for two bases, scoring Cowles and. Moore. Miller's batting was one features of the game.

In four times up, he made two singles and a double. Tomorrow and Wednesday's games are the last of the season between the top-notchers and Tailenders. Hallman-ed. One more busy and job today. There's "Rocky Mountie you want to get lots in it." And Uncle Orie burglarized the pivotal sack. Gee! Ain't he the second story man, now! Sexton's spatter shoots didn't seem to have the Highlanders guessing as on the last occasion he faced them. Jayes, after getting two, or our minnumber of hits, sprained his ankle in attempting a pilfer, Did you ever see such tough luck as is pursuing the team at this time? Says the Columbia State dope fiend: "Or how about this for a league; Augusta, Columbia, Savannah, Charleston, Charlotte and Wilmington.

Look at the map. These cities are all close together, and are all good ball towns." Some of the Sally cities are not satisfed with this year's performance of the league, and if a cireuit composed of the towns doped above could be organized 'twould be great news for some of bugs. It looks like we're up against the real thing the way of a large hospital list. Ross' bum digit will likely keep him the game the balance of the season; there is no likelihood of Capt. Smith with a similar complaint, returning to balldom, anytime soon; a Handsome Harry's nether limblet is splints, which is b-a-d, and now Jayes has gotten a hurt.

Certainly hope it will turn out we didn't a mistake in releasing Ashton at the time he was let go, but things looks a little bilious. The News and Observer records a game of ball recently pulled off between the Warrenton Invincibles and the Miles Bros. Team, a club composed of brothers, although, two it impossible to be on hand, a couple of cousins of the same name filled in. Talking about novelties- -that's nothing. This scribe once saw a game Fayetteville, in which every man on in were brothers, there being addition, two brother substitutes, the oldest of the crowd wearing mus- tachios, and the youngest being in knickerbockers, and all played star ball.
