It is hard t' believe, for instance, that there was ever a circus at Fulton and Iloyt streets. It is equally difficult to visualize a vaudeville entertainment in the Brooklyn Institute.

But there was a circus lot on I- ulton street, neverthe- less, and in the old Institute some of I tlie best entertainers the boroimh has! ever seen performed. Some time ago The Eagle published an article entitled "The Singing Vet-! erans, Mike ami Bill Fitzpatriek." and I it brought forth a request from a I reader who wished to know if the l-'itz-i Patrick brothers, who were famous not i so very long ago. have any of The old programs used fur the performances in the circus lot mentioned abuve. He also asked several other questions which the Fitzpatricks have answered in a letter to The Fagle, which throws a good deal of light on the entertainers and the amusement places in the borough twenty years ago. The letter follows: Koeulls Old Circus Ixt on Fulton Avenue "Your reader asks for a program of the circus on the Fulton street Int.

He should have said Fulton avenue. On the spot where old church and graveyard stood was the circus lot, of which the program speaks. Think of it! No cars running on Sundays. K. T. is the priiuipal one, aio nw-atiii(f their cars under a temporary permit. During almost the entire tenure of the Mltchel adminisiralion this perplexing question tvas ponuins in the Board of Estimate. Last winter sent a bill to the Legislature empowering the city to operate a railroad between the terminals of the Williamsburg Bridge.

This hill tailed to pass. It was hoped that the tnreat of municipal operation would cause the railroad companies to accept the terms offered bv the citv. hut the companies, it Is said, would have preferred to sacrifice their local bride traffic rather than accept the con tract prepared by the Bureau of M'unchises and approved by the Hoard ot Kstimate. In all probaliililv this bill will be reintroduced at the. present Ul lne -Legislature, Mayor Hy an beins.

au a I and not only because of the Williamsburg Bridge franchise situation, in favor of the city operating the bridsje cars. Just before the old administration went out of office a new contrai concerning the use of the Williamsburg Bridge by the surface railroads had been drawn up by counsel for the companies. It was In the nature of a compromise between the original demands of the city and the terms the companies were willing to agree to. The new contract gave the city a slightly increased revenue, Inn left out the important provision upon which the city insisted that, the companies shall keep in repair the bridge tracks, which are laid and are owned by the city. This contract was referred to Commissioner Kracke of the Department of Plant and Structures, who refused to agree to it.

Without the Commissioner's signature the bridge franchise contract is not valid. Commissioner Delaney, Mr. Kraeke's successor, also has declined to sign the and declares that he will not put his name to it unless the operating companies make provision for the creation of a sinking fund, out of the learnings from their local bridge tralllc, to meet all expenses incident to keeping the tracks in good condi tion and renewing the rails when necessary.
