I I THE DANVILLE NEWS MONDAY, OCTOBER It, 1999 PAGE 9 Eagles offense finally- wakes op trauma unit of Thomas Jefferson Hospital, where tests showed he had swelling in the spine near the base of the neck but could move his arms and legs. After Norm Johnsons 48-yard field goal cut it to 10-3 with 11:48 left, the Eagles stopped Dallas on third-and-18 from the Philadelphia 41. Pederson connected with Johnson for 36 yards down the middle. But rookie lineman Doug Brzezinksis holding penalty wiped out a screen pass to Duce Staley that would have Pederson connected with Johnson on a 28-yard touchdown pass with 67 seconds left as the previously clueless Eagles came back from a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit to beat Dallas 13-10. The Eagles (1-4) awakened from a slumber that saw them go 18 quarters, 57 possessions and two days shy of a month without an offensive touchdown.

They had lost 20 of 23 games and got their first victory since Dec. 3, 1998. It feels great, Johnson said. I was getting tired of facing the media every week. A lot of people have taken a lot of heat.

Now, it is the Cowboys turn. Dallas (3-1) saw its best start since winning the Super Bowl in 1995 go awry against an Eagles team that had shown itself to be utterly futile in its first four games and three quarters under coach Andy Reid. The Cowboys were erratic on offense after losing Michael Irvin, their career receiving leader and five-time Pro Bowl selection, to a scary neck injury in the first quarter. Irvins head hit the turf awkwardly as he was tackled after an 8-yard reception late in the first quarter. He was taken to the spinal By KEN BERGER AP Sports Writer PHILADELPHIA Charles Johnson slumped against a wall in the hallway at Veterans Stadiifm, smiling widely while doing a telephone interview.

Doug Pederson walked by and offered a playful jab: Is that the president? No, but a touchdown for the Philadelphia Eagles sure seemed enough to warrant a call from the Oval Office. A victory over the archival Dallas Cowboys was unthinkable. Somehow, both happened on Sunday. Lady Ironmen dump Carroll Harlor. ends scoring slump with hat trick From staff reports DANVILLE The Danville girls soccer team gave its possible district opponents something to think about when they beat their second Philadelphia-area team of the year Saturday.

The Lady Ironmen shut out Archbishop Carroll 4-0, a week after defeating Haverford, 2-0. Ashley Willoughby provided the Danville offense with a pair of goals. The sophomore has scored in bunches all season, usually getting two or more in games where shes scored to accumulate a team-high 14 goals. The first score of the game came from Willoughby, off a Danielle Grubb feed, at the 38:03 mark of the first period. Then just around 10 minutes later Willoughby put Danville in a comfort zone with her second goal, an unassisted boot at the 27:23 mark.

At That point the, gama waa dafi- nitely being controlled by Danville, the Lady Ironmen outshot Archbishop Carroll 29-8, and got four comer kicks to their opponents one. Aleah Wright, whos had eight shutouts already this season, Was her same dazzling self, saving six shots. That performance was enough to make the lead stand up, but Danville tacked on another pair of goals to improve to 1 1-4 overall. Bowden can overcome loss of Warrick Here is one more reason to root for Bobby Bowden to win another national championship: Last week, when the Florida State coach learned the cops planned to charge star receiver Peter Warrick, a teammate and a department-store clerk with scam-ming to get $412 worth of clothing for $21, he didnt rush home and reread "Crime and Punishment or agonize whether he'd failed as a father figure. He didnt call in psychologists, psychiatrists, ministers, retired FBI agents or Calvin Klein to talk to his team.

Instead, Bowden crossed his fingers and hoped the ballplayers got tagged with misdemeanors rather than felonies. That way, they wouldnt run up against a school policy barring athletes charged with felonies from playing until the charges are resolved. At age 69, he is proof that if you live long enough and win often enough, speaking plainly is a virtue instead of a burden. Im sitting there pleading to myself for a misdemeanor, Bowden said. I didnt want to give up a talent like that.

It shook me. It shook our team. But not so anybody noticed. Saturdays game with once-fear-some and still-hated Miami was tied 21-21 at halftime, but over once the No. 1 -ranked Seminoles played less macho-man-to-man defense and more zone.

On the other side of the ball, meanwhile, Warricks absence was treated with all the urgency of a casting call. It didnt hurt, of course, that FSU rolled up 483 yards in total offense. Quarterback Chris Weinke completed 23 of 34 passes for 332 yards and 2 touchdowns. That included a 48-yard scoring strike' to Germaine Stringer Warricks understudy less than four minutes into the game. By the end, 10 more players caught passes.

Running back Travis Minor turned a season-high 23 carries into a season-high 146 yards. Said Bowden of his team, It tells you were not one-dimensional, thank goodness. It shows you were in the hunt like a few are. Nothing is given yet. That last bit is Bowdens way of saying he doesnt want to go through this all season, but that he is prepared to.

The 22-year-old Warrick, who passed up certain first-round selection in the NFL draft to return for his senior season, has a court date scheduled today. His attorney, former Florida State swimmer John Kenny, said it usually takes six weeks for the matter to come to trial, but he hoped to have it resolved before then. In this case, Peter cannot afford to take too long, Kenny said. He has more interest in saying, Lets get it done. Its rare when a lawyer for a ballplayer seeks swift justice, but Warricks situation is unique.

One of his principal motives for returning to school was a chance to win the Heisman Trophy. But like FSU and its no-play policy, the Downtown Athletic Club of New York, which hands out the Heisman, has a policy barring someone with a felony conviction on their record from taking it home. That almost certainly wont be the reason Warrick doesnt win. If his case goes according to form, it seems very unlikely his next suit of clothes will be provided free of charge, courtesy of the Florida Department of Corrections. tonight in Bloomsburg. Boys Soccer Evan Harlor finally broke out his scoring slump Saturday in Danvilles 9-1 stomping of Williamsport. Harlor broke out in style scoring three goals. He had been scoreless in the teams last nine games after scoring nine times in the teams first seven contests. Harlor began the scoring a minute into the first half when he put a pass from Greg Haladay, who finished the game with a goal and three assists, between the posts.

Nine minutes later Harlor assisted Doug Hoffman on the second goal of the game to give Danville the last score it would need. Chris Pride, whos been spectacular recently, only had to save one shot as the Ironmen allowed the Millionaires just two shots on goal, to Danvilles 19, and not one comer kick. The Ironmen (10-4-2) got first half scores from Haladay off a Hans Bottisch assist, and two more from Williamsport got on the board with the first goal after the break with Samer Rajjoubs goal, but the momentum definitely didnt shift in the Millionaires favor. Jim Barbarich, Greg Sidorov and Ryan Strange, who scored twice, scored goals in the closing 15 minutes to ensure the victory. Danville and Harlor look to stay on track Tuesday when they host Warrior Run.

I have. I just felt like I had all kinds of time out there. Flutie also had room. He scrambled for a 21 -yard gain on third-and-20 to sustain a drive that led to Christies field goal and a 17-7 lead late in the first half. The Bills never lost their lead, but the Steelers were never far behind.

Pittsburgh lost its third in a row and suffered its first road loss, but the Steelers found at least some of their missing offense. Kordell who went into the game with one touchdown pass and 11 interceptions in his last eight starts, completed 21 of 29 passes for 216 yards, including touchdowns to Hines Ward in the first quarter and to Troy Edwards in the second. The Buffalo defense, which made some big plays against the Dolphins last week, came up with another big play when linebacker Sam Rogers picked off Stewart with 3:42 left in the third quarter. The Steelers had just driven across midfield and were threatening to take back the lead; the Bills drove 38 yards and Fluties 8-yard pass to Riemersma made it' 24-14. The Steelers made it close when Bills comerback Thomas Smith was called for pass interference on Will Blackwell in the end zone late in the game.

Three plays later, Jerome Bettis plowed in from the 1 to make it 24-21 with 2:44 to play. Offensively we were much improved, Bettis said. We did some good things out there. The Steelers running game faltered again and Bettis 13 carries for 24 yards was left looking for his first 100-yard game of the season after posting six last season. The Danville boys soccer team routed Williamsport 9-1 Saturday for Hoffman, No.

9, scored Danvilles second goal of the game. Pittsburgh loses third straight Bison fall at Columbia; Suspensions hurt Bloom From wire reports NEW YORK Columbia rebounded from a 50-point defeat last week, upsetting Bucknell 10-7 Saturday on a 46-yard field goal by Neal Kravitz with 4:10 left. Bucknell (4-2) took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on a one-yard run by fullback Jason Marrow after a 73-yard drive in which quarterback Don McDowell completed three passes for 59 yards and ran for 10 more. Columbia (2-2). tied the score with 1 :02 left in the first quarter on a two-yard run by tailback Johnathan Reese after Reese had carried seven times for 25 yards in an 86-yard drive.

Danville News Cory Cowles its 10th win of the season. Doug Folmar passed for 293 yards and a key touchdown to Dondre Gilliam as Millersville overcame two long catches by Bloomsburgs Matt Wilson for scores to defeat the Huskies 31-21 on Saturday. Wilson caught a 47-yard TD throw from Chris Thompson in the first quarter, then scored on a 76-yard pass from Thompson that helped Bloomsburg (3-3, 1-1 PS AC East) narrow a 14-point lead to 24-21 with 2:10 left in the third quarter. But Folmar found Gilliam for an 8-yard scoring pass with 14:23 left in the game that capped an 80-yard drive to give Millersville (4-1, 2-0) a Please see BISON, Page 10 Lou Gehrig and Joe DiMaggio led the Yankees to an 18-4 victory over the New York Giants in Game 2 of the 1936 World Series. Mike Stanley had five of Bostons 24 hits, and Valentin and Jason Varitek had four apiece.

Trot Nixon and Jose Offerman each had five RBIs and Varitek had a record five runs. Boston outscored 19 of 26 NFL teams on Sunday, and if not Corderos solo homer in the ninth inning the Red Sox would have matched Clevelands Indians and Browns combined. By BILL PORTER Associated Press Writer ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. Doug Flutie is back in the spotlight. Flutie was 21-for-32 with three touchdown passes as Buffalo beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 24-21 Sunday, for the Bills fourth straight victory.

I had my best day today, Flutie said. Coupled with New Englands loss to Kansas City on a missed field goal in the final seconds, Buffalo moved into a tie for first place in the AFC East. We saw the miss and it was nice, Flutie said. Were 4-1 and thats nice, too. Eric Moulds caught six passes for 122 yards and scored one touchdown.

He put the Bills ahead to stay in the second quarter when he shook comerback Chad Scott on a post pattern for a 49-yard TD and a 14-7 lead. We knew the safety likes to come down and cover the tight end, so that gave us an opportunity to make a big play, Moulds said. I just wanted to get up on the corner and give him an out move and then break it to the post. Flutie completed 11 ofhis first 12 passes and finished with 261 yards and no interceptions. He also threw touchdown passes to fullback Sam Gash and tight end Jay Riemersma, and Steve Christie kicked a 29-yard field goal.

This was my best day throwing this season, said Flutie, who passed for 300 yards and two interceptions in the opening-day loss to Indianapolis. The ball came out well and I saw the field better than Bucknell missed three field goal attempts and Kravitz narrowly missed an earlier 49-yard try before connecting on the game winner, a career best for the senior. Columbia lost to Lehigh 63-13 last week, but now has won two of three games against Patriot League opponents. Mike Glynn made his first start at quarterback for the Lions and completed 25 of 3 1 passes for 285 yards. Tailback Jabu Powell, who moved over from split end, gained 128 yards on 23 carries for the Bison.

Bucknell hosts Duquesne Saturday at Christy Mathewson Stadium. BLOOMSBURG Drew humiliating, Indians catcher Sandy Alomar said after the Red Sox beat Cleveland 23-7 to force a deciding fifth game in the first-round series. But the good part about it is that none of those runs mean anything tomorrow The teams return to Cleveland for Game 5 tonight, and with Pedro Martinez nursing a sore back, neither team will have its ace. Charles Nagy will start for the Indians and Bret Saberhagen will go for Boston. John Valentin had two homers and seven RBIs as Boston broke the record for postseason runs set when Red Sox get offensive in rout of Indians; force final game By JIMMY GOLEN AP Sports Writer 1 BOSTON Cleveland manager Mike Hargrove lost track of the damage Boston inflicted on his Indians, and the guy in the Green Monsters manual scoreboard could barely find enough crooked numbers to keep track of the record-breaking rout.

Twenty-three runs. Twenty-four hits. A 16-run margin of victory. All playoff records. It was embarrassing.

It was.
