Laid to Rest. After a lingering and prostrating illness of many months Mrs. Joskfhixk Gibbs, is to-day laid to rest. Mrs. Gibbs was born in 1851, in the house where her father, Mr.

Win. Coulter, now liyes. and was 38 years of age when she died. She leaves a husband, Mr. James T.

Gibbs, and a son and daughter, to mourn their Km. Thorn ton started to California over land and fell on the way; where his body is buri ed none can tell. John married Miss Eliza Warne.

He built and lived for a time ia the house now occupied by A. D. O'Donovan. He moved in or '5G to the vicinity of Parkersburg, West Va, From there to Missouri. He was an honest and upright man, and we trust in death he found a rich inheri- tance.

Al though Miss li. has rendered entire satisfaction it is rumored that she will not return to this school as a certain bachelor in the board is opposed to h(!" teaching any longer Mutterings are heard concerning the resumption of toll-taking at the middle Kate, which seem to be justified in the act that portions of the pike between Ginger Hill and Clokey have. not been repaired for twenty years. Cleveland Leader (Kep) The Dem- ocratc majority in Congress may be very anxious to adjourn before the Bourbon convention at Chicago, but the country is far more impatient to have Congress quit. St. Louis Globe-Democrat Cleveland is confidently proclaimed to be Tilden's choice, and at this mo- ment his star is certainly rising. But it is yet true, with Bayard, Payne, Hoadly, and McDonald above the ho- rizon. that "doubtful things are mighty uncertain." Nebraska Stale Journal At the meeting of the New York and Bos- ton kickers the other day, Georgfc Wil- liani Curtus was called to the chair and made an exhortation to the faith ful.

He said "We must all hang to aether." Now. for a lot of kickers to try to agree and "hang together" is a little absurd. The first principle of a tuorougbred kicker is that he won't hang to-gether with anybody unless he can have his own way. Galveston News (Dem.1: If the Tilden declination should open the 7 1 eyes of Democratic leaders to the na- ture and greatness of the danger into which the party has been led, the par- ty will fortunately escape the snare. But if the Tilden delegates already selected and instructed are infected with iealousv of tariff reform, if the Tilden movement meant a dodge of a tf that issue, unity, concord, and the de- feat of James G.

Blaine are not assured. It will be dillicult to remove the im- pression of carefully prepared treachery in the Tilden movement. Whoever in that movement does not admit that fie was deceived, must admit that he himself practiced to deceive or was guilty of a hasty, inconsiderate, whol- ly mistaken in pol- Hies is as dangerous as deceit. Galveston (Texas) News Ihe New loik out is the father of the I Flower boom, and there is hardly a Uoubt that Mr. bamuel J.

Kandall is Mr. Dana's first choice of those promi- neatly mentioned for the Presidency. It ia not possible, then, that Flower is merely a Kandall stool-pigeon, set up for the purpose of holding the New iorK delegation togetner in readiness to cast its vote solidly for Kandall at the proper time? That Mr. Kandall lias traps set to catch the nomination there is no reason to doubt. Kandall is known to be a warm personal friend of Mr.

laden, and perhaps Tilden's declination was kept back to the last uiuuicut iui u.c purpose oi giving me Kandallitcs a chance, through Flower, to get in their work ia New York. Chicago Inter Ocean: The indica- tions now point to Cleveland and Car- lisle or Cleveland and Hoadly as the probable representatives of the senti mental, free trade, highly reformatory wing of the Democratic party, and to Samuel J. Kandall, with perhaps Dan iel W. Voorhees, John M. Palmer, or Lyman Trumbull, as a representative of what some people are pleased to call the "machine methods." the great i uusinew monopolies, me capitalistic state," and the party experience and ui me iwmuurnie party, nr.
