Local notices; one enta word. Tho City Ticket. The choice of a local ticket is more important to the individual voter than that of President. The people of a community have no more grave and important duty brought before them than that of selecting incumbents for the various offices to be tilled at the spring elections. It is of more serious significance than is ordinarily realized, that these places shall be occupied by honest, capable and energetic men, whose highest motive, ambition and efforts shall be to subserve and main tain the interest and welfare of the community.

Not all who oiler their services and candidancy are worthy and capable. In the approaching campaign an abundance of material will come forward and, while a portion of it is worthy and capable, the rest should not be trusted with the confidence of the people and with the care of their interest. It is neither our desire nor our prerogative to indicate in any particular who is not worthy. The exercise of a proper care and discretion iu this respect will prove an infallible guide only let its instincts be obeyed and the legti-uiale result will be all that could be desired. Who is worthy and who is not? Who is capable and who is not? Who will probably prove honest and honorable in the care of their trusts, and who will not.

These are the problems? Are they diJlicult of solution? Public Meeting. Two questions of public interest, of paramount importance, now present themselves to our people. They briefly: 1. We must have a bridge; that is, we must try. The past winter and the break up that is coming are convincing.

There is not a business man in town who footed up his last year's business without the consciousness that the loss of the bridge was a loss to him. The community at large suffered, and of course as the town loses each person in it bears part of that loss. Now that can be remedied; we can get a bridge easier than any town on the river; it is within reaching distance so far. In a little while the chance will be lost. Now is the time to act.

2. We must move toward a railway connection with Finlcyville. The Baltimore Ohio railway company can be convinced, we think, that they never built six miles of road that will pay better thau this. Our town must make the move; our people must show an anxiety to have the road; residents along the route must be stirred up to a realization of the mailer; there must be a general move, and the force of thai movement must guin its strength and inspiration from Tush. These arc important interests.

11 we get no bridge, we arc. cut off from all the Allegheny County trade both up and down; the East Shore road if bir.lt may as well bo in Halifax for all us; and instead of doing good it will do harm, for it will carry the trade past ns, trade that now coined here will go either to Brownsville or Elizabeth. Women shoppers especially will not risk ferriage when lliey dont need to. Then the completion of the Ilumplield, of which there is no longer any doubt, for the contracts arc let. and Ihe men are at work, will cut across the line of our trade, and slice it from Clokcy to Coal Centre.

Our only remedies for these two evite arc a bridge and a' I'in-leyville branch. The rule by which either a town or an individual prospers is "(Jet all you can, and Keep all you fJet." The policy of this town, if present indifference and future inactivity prevail, would seem to be "Don't try to get more and lose half you already have." Awake! citizens! Let us have a town meeting and let it be an earnest, active business-like assembly. There wn9 a time when we were pushed ahead by the very force of the wave that swept up the river. The flood tide is past, and if we would not he swept back with the ebb, wo must recover what we have lost, and 1'nll For tho Shore! Think, art, jMoiiongaliolii 1oah. The iN'fcw York of yesterday contains the merit roll for a January standing, at West 1'oint.

The New York papers also give tho honor roll for January standing, nt Princeton, In which we see Fred Alexander standing in his class of We are nlwnyo glad to record the sucpfss of our hoy abroad. take work, and were it not; for kind friends could not be done.

Let's look at yesterday's issue, for instance, and see where the news carae from and how it got into the Daily. The item of Wallace's disappearance vvo got from Mr. Swickard and Mr. McAllister, one of whom was his endorser, tho other his boarding keeper. The Isler wedding was kindly handed in by Key.

Campbell; the Republican suggestion meeting by Squire Williams; the county committee meeting notice was mailed from Washington; the Social item came from Mr. Add Stocidale, whoso team carried the party; the Dewalt excursion we got from S. B. Huntley; the death of Mr. Siekman was kindly brought in by Squire Crow; and funeral notice from Dr.

Wilson; the Morton anniversary was sent by a correspondent; the glass worker's compromise was given us by Mr Camp; local personals we got from Beallesville mail carrier, and Mr. Far-quhar; the Fenny Farm item from Mr. Wcddcll, the badly burned item from Dr. Vauvoorhis; the JcnKins item from Will Bowman. Charley Crall furnished the thermometer stages, and the rivers came by special telegrams as they do every clay, at a cost to us of over 6100 a year; the temperance statistics came from Mrs.

Walker; the starting of the Bessemer works was sent up by Quill Yohc; Prof. Noss gave us the MeCabe lecture item, and Allen Wall sent us a marked paper with the Blaine dinner noted. The other items we picked up on the streets, or condensed and rewrote from newspaper clippings. So our readers will see that more than twenty friends contributed in one way and another to make yesterday's Daily interesting; others will help us to-day and in that way, and in that way only, are we enabled to the items as they lloat. It is very pleasant for us to record this.

The little paper has hosts of friends; they take pride in seeing that the Daily -'Never gets heft" on news, and without their constant and kind help its publication would be impossible. We have perhaps the best correspondents of any country paper in theState; they never forget us. We are infinitely obliged to them. And to one and all we acknowledge with pleasure, this kintiruss. No visitor is more welcome tluiu he who brings in an "item." Tin-re are a number of gentlemen w-ho take great pains to do this, and we wish there were more.

In this connection wc refer with pride to the letters we print from time to time. It is a feature of the Daily. Letters of great 'nUust have been printed lately from Old Mexico, Montana, Minneapolis, London, New York, Florida, Manitoba, Columbus, Cincinnati and so on all of Ihem very reada ble, and full of information, written by people known to our readers, and of course read with greater zest. The Daily bi.icas grows cacii da our circulation steadily increases; our advertising patronage is profitable, our friends numerous, and it is a source of great pleasure to know that with each month of its existence the Daily has made friends and kept, thcni. In fact no town of its size in America presented a better little Daily paper, and though its editorial conduct may not be of a very high standard, yet it is tho result of hard work, and the best wo can do under the circumstances. The team could not be stopped, and continued on their flight, finally plunging through the plate-glass windows of a china shop. 30. Con siderable excitement was occasioned at Port Royal this morning by the dis covery of a colli at the front door of the residence of Jonn F. Moss, the distiller, recently convicted of manslaught er for the murder of James McGugin, last August. Inside the lid uf the collin were written the words: "You must die." As this is the death warning used by the Moilie Maguires it is supposed a lodge of that kind exists in the neighborhood. Moss has not yet received his sentence, and many think that if he is not seen sentenced Judge Iluutcr will be relieved of the duty.

Considerable dissatisfaction was felt here at the verdict, many being of the opinion that it should have been murder in the second degree.
