The Brigade dress parades have all been very tine, all the regiments trjing to do their best; for, as you know, Major, it is the dress parade and the review which show whether good work has been done in company and battalion drills. AH the regiments have done well. The papers of Pittsburg, of course, always say that the 14th and 18th regiments have done the best, as these regiments are from Pittsburg, but their verdict is not usually the verdict of the spectators.

From our Coal Centre Correspondent. The railroad company still insist on calling this place Greenfield, notwith standing the fact that there is a town in Erie countv by that name, and the fact also that our borough name and post office has been changed for several months. Letters and telegrams must be directed to Coal Centre, and freight and express matter to Greenfield. When the new B. O.

short line is completed, we hope the company will condescend to allow us to have our goods shipped to the place we live in The enterprising officers of the Monon-gahela Division have ordered all freight and express matter for Coal Centre to be shipped to Greenfield, Pa or they will not be responsible for any loss, and Greenfield, being in Erie countv, they will of course deliver goods marked in that way at Coal Centre, Washington county. This order, it will be observed, is issued to avoid mistakes. There is nothing like being careful, and we hope shippers in the future will be careful to mark all freight intended for Coal Centre, "Greenfield, and then it it don't go to Greenfield it may possibly find its way to Coal Centre. By adhering strictly to the order referred to much confusion may or may not be avoided. Correspondents will, however, continue to addrets their communications, whether by mail or by telegraph, to Coal Centre.

We understand the company has kindly consented to deliver mail pouches bearing that name at this station, for which we, the citizens of Coal Centre feel profoundly thankful, but as Uncle Sam insists on directing his mail bags in that way, he will of course have to run the risk, as the company have declared they will not be I responsible for packages shipped to this town unless they are directed to some other town. The company that issues orders of that kind ought to have double track, so they could send 'reight the right way and the wrong way both at the same time. It would business, render the company ess liable for losses, and save shippers the trouble of being too nice about directions. Your California correspondent "Bumble Bee" is trying very hard to sting our people, but as he boasts of superiority in nothing except base ball, he can buzz away. We are pleased to know that the California people have aspirations of some kind.

So go in Bumble, but be sure yon don't lose your stinger. x. Aug. 18th, '83. CANONSBURG FAIR, The tenth annual exhibition of the Char-tiers Valley Agricultural Association will be held on the grounds at Canonsburg, Washington county, on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, August 21, 22 and 23, 1883.

Washington ROBERT B. BEAT II. NEW COMMANDER OK THE G. A. K.

The Grand Army of the Republic has attained a membership of over a hundred thousand. Col. Robert B. Beath, who has recently been elected Commander-in-Chief of the G. A.

was born in Philadelphia in 1839. He entered the serv ice in 1861 as a private, and remained in the field until the close of the war. While serving in the capacity of First Lieutenant of the Fifty-eighth Pennsyl vania Volunteers at the second battle of Bull Run he was wounded, and imme diately upon his recoyery was promoted to the command of a company of col ored troops, and served with them in the Army of the James. At Newmarket Heights, while making a gallant charge, he was again wounded, and lost his right leg, September 29, 1864. As soon as he could leave the hospi tal he returned to military duty at camp William Penn, Philadelphia, and re mained there until his health permitted him to join his regiment.

He was mustered out in September, 1865, with a lieutenant colonel's commission. After the war he turned his entire at tention to business affairs, and for several years was secretary of the Anthracite Mining Exchange. In 1871 he was elected Surveyor-Gen eral of Pennsylvauia, and after his term of office expired returned to Phila delphia, where he engaged in the insur ance business, being now the secretary of the United Firemen's Insurance Co. He was one of the first to become a member of the G. A.

R. upon its organization, and seryed four years as Assistant Adjutant General of the department, being subsequently elected District Commander by a unanimous vote. After joining the National Encampment, he was appointed Inspector Gen- erai twice, ana ms work of organiza tion in this department was thorough and soldier-like. Under Commander-in-chief Hartranft and also Wagner, he was Adjutant General for one year. Even in time of peace, it requires no small amount of tact and energy to manage 100,000 men, but Col. Beath has a record which fully justifies his being entrusted with the important and honorable office which has been conferred upon him. FROM THE CIIAPLA1A. Lake Conneaut, Aug. 16, 1883.

Dear Jqor: We bade adieu to Webster on Tuesday morning, August 7th, having for our objective point Lake Conneaut, but stopped a few days at Apollo, a former charge, where we spent the time very pleasantly among friends of other years. On Saturday we started for camp over the Allegheny Valley railroad, changing cars at Franklin for Meadville. and at Mead-ville for the camp. The country traversed by these roads certainly very rough. I wish the farmers up our way could see these poor farms; I am sure they would return home and be contented to till their limestone soil.

Upon arrival in camp I was cordially welcomed by the Tenth Regiment, with whom I have been, as Chaplain, for the last five years. 1 missed the company from MonoLgahela City, and it is generally exceeded that great injustice was done them in disbanding their organization, all because one man wanted to show his authority." Water from the lake is brought to all the company quarters by pipes. loo is cheap, and for fresh milk only 20 cents gallon.

Supplies do not appear to bo hard to get, and at reasonable prices.
