(UPI) The Ut- tle church resounded to the vibrant, husky tones of Ethel Waters Tuesday in a last tribute to the' singer 3 who rose from a black ghetto in Philadelphia to become an internationally renowned star of stage, movies and television. Handkerchiefs fluttered and tears flowed as her own tape recording of "His Eye Is On The Sparrow" was played for about 100 mourners at the Church of Recessional in Forest Lawn.

"I sing because I'm happy, "I sing because I'm free, "For his eye is on the sparrow, "And I know he watches me." It was a joyful sendoff for Miss Waters who died Sept. 1 at age 80. Dr. Grady Wilson, the presiding minister, called it a "little triumphal service a glorious homegoing for one whose life and songs thrilled millions." The friends present were mostly from the Billy Graham Association with which Miss Waters sang in the last years of her long career. Wilson said Miss Waters prayed for death as a release from the pain she experienced in recent months from many ills including diabetes, high blood pressure and nearblindness.

"She was homesick and now she's gone home," he said. He recalled when Miss Waters first joined the religous group nearly 20 years ago, a television reporter asked her if she thought the "Graham Crusades" would be successful and she replied sharply: "Sure will, God don't sponsor no flops." Again, he recalled an airline stewardess recognized Miss Waters on a flight to Maine during the winter and said to her: "Why do you want to come up here in weather like this, for heaven's sake?" Her reply: "That's right, baby, for heaven's sake." Singer Pearl Bailey was the lone show business celebrity on hand. Miss Waters was a regular guest on Miss Bailey's TV program a few years A message from evangelist Billy Graham, traveling in Europe, was read. He said "Our loss is heaven's Did you know the RECORD-EAGLE is still only 90t per week delivered to your home.
