Perm State ends Rutgers streak at 18 By United Press International Rutgers University tried to step up in class on the college football field Friday night and found it wasn't quite ready for life at the top. Before the largest crowd ever to witness a college football game in the state of Jersey the Scarlet Knights had their 18-game winning streak longest in the nation -abruptly halted by 15th-ranked Penn State, 45-7, at Giants Stadium and the score was not really a proper indication of the one-sidedness of the game. Rutgers, which had built its winning streak mostly against small Eastern schools such as Colgate, Bucknell, Lehigh, Lafayette and the like, was completely overwhelmed by the Nit- Lions from the very outset. Behind the running of sophomores Suhey and Mike Guman, each of whom scored two first-half touchdowns, Penn State built a 38-0 lead at intermission and could have made the final score much worse than it was had not Coach Jce Paterno taken pity on the undermanned Scarlet Knights. "Paterno did us a favor," admitted Rutgers' Coach Frank Burns: "He could have run the score up on us if he wanted to.

They dominated the game in every way. I'm far from satisfied with the way we performed. But even if we had executed 100 percent, I don't think we could have beaten Penn State." While the rest of the nation's top- ranked teams don't begin play for another week, there are 17 games scheduled for today throughout the country.
