Willard H. Maxson, lifelong resident of Cedar county and Springdale's last Civil war veteran. died at his home in that village yesterday at the age of 82. He had been in 111 health for some time and a fail Sunday night sulted in a brokhip, which inJury hastened his death. Wit lard." he.

C. Rundall, superintendent of the cal schools, is organizing A school hand which includes pupils above the fourth grade. About thirty memhere have signed up and most of them have ordered new instruments. Mr. Rundall expects to have a band of from thirty five to forty pieces when the organization de complete.

Private lessons are being given by the instructor before a general practice takes place, Hets. After their execution at Har. per's Ferry, William Maxson had a portrait painter come to his home and paint the pictures of John Brown and fate of his associates, and these portraits were later sold to the State Historical society for preservation in the state capitol, Des Moines. Mr. Maxson was the son of W.illiam and Delilah Maxson who came from Harrison county, Ohio, at an early date, and his mother the first person buried in the Springdale cemetery.

With his passing the last remnant sof the R. is gone from Springdale. Uncle Willard was a member of the Noel Morrison post G. A. R.

at West Branch. He ran away to Join the army at the age of 17, with a schoolmate, Peter Frame, who caught cold and died soon after the two adventurers were in camp at Davenport. Young Willard's father came and took him out of the army because of his youth and illness, later allowed him to go to Fort Scott. where he enlisted in the Tenth Kansas infantry, serving two years and seven months. Coming from family of stnunch republicans, he changed his politics at the conclusion of the Civil war, and for the rest of his life was the only democrat in the family, His brother, T.

W. Maxson. was for many doorkeeper in the house of representatives at Des Moines, and many arguments were waged between the staunch republican T. W. and the stubborn democrat Witlard.

Born in A log house Nov. 1845, Willard H. Maxson lived his entire life in the neighborhood of his birth. place. Of a family of six children.

he is suvived by his brother, T. W. Maxson. of Los Angeles, who was 90 vears old in June; a sister. Mrs.

Lou Saint of Venice. and a halfsister. Mrs. Zona Pingrev. of Angeles.

The eldest of the family, Jont Masson, died three years ago at the age of 93. Mr. Maxson 18 survived also by his wife and three children, Don Maxson of Toddville, Foster Maxson and Mrs. Arthur Fogg of the Spring. ville neighborhood.
