Funk, 74, died Tuesday, Oct. 12, 1999, in Central Community Hospital, Elkader, after a sudden illness. Services: 11 a.m. Friday, St. Paul Lutheran Church, by Pastor Gary Hatcher.

He was born June 9, 1925, near Clayton Center, Iowa, the son of Arno Funk and Hortense Wahls Funk. Dwayne was united in marriage with Vernell Werger at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Garnavillo. He worked with agriculture as a farmer. Survivors include his mother, Janette of An-amosa; a brother, John of Broomfield, and two sisters, Macque-lyn Baril Morton of Cedar Rapids and Jo Anne Maria Trout of Colorado Springs, and his maternal grandparents, Jacqueline Rae Sloan of Mar ion, "Papa" Steve Sloan of Hiawatha and "Papa Two Puppies" Donald W. Tomanka and wife Beth of Cedar Falls. Myles was born the son of Michael Gregory Trout and Constance Rae Tomanka Trout on Nov; 11, 1992, in Cedar Rapids. He was in first grade at Wilkins Elementary School in Marion. He attended First Assembly of God and Antioch Christian Church in Marion.

Myles loved his family and his many friends and loved soccer, swimming, music and sports. He is dearly loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Robert P. Black, 57, of i58o Valleyview died of cancer Tuesday, Oct. 12, 1999, in his home.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Murdoch Funeral Home, Marion, by the Rev. Peter Wenzel. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

l'l 4 'rmf She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Gerry and Bob Phillips of Sheridan, six grandchildren, Laura Reed, Todd Van-Nest, Ann Van-Nest, Michael Baril of Burlington, Vt, Also surviving are two aunts, eight nieces arid, nephews, three grandnieces and a grandnephew. He was preceded in death by his father, David. He was born Jan. 2. 1948, in Anamosa, the son of David and Janette Parker Baril.

He attended school in Martelle and Lisbon and graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1966. He served with the Army in Germany from 1968 to 1969. He worked in Cedar Rapids, Colorado and Nevada before settling in Lisbon. Instead of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Christian Church, 214 Military Martelle, IA 52305. Also surviving are 28 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; and 18 great-great-grand-. children.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; a son, Lavelle Long in infancy; a son-in-law, Harry Toms; two brothers; two sisters and a grandson, Matt Petty. Velma was born the daughter of William and Mary Prosser Bower on March 3, 1905, in Pennsylvania, On Dec. 19, 1922, she was married to Bruce Long. He died Dec. 22, 1949.

She then married Fred Walker in September 1953. He died May 1, 1998. Velma was a member of the Methodist church and was employed as a nurse's aide at the Arizona State Hospital for 16 years; retiring in 1972. A memorial fund has been established In Velma's memory. Maurice F.

Smith, husband of the former Jane Hahn of Cedar Rapids, died Oct. 11, 1999, at his home in Naples, Fla. He had been a Naples resident since 1970 and a resident of Moorings Park since 1981. Mr. Smith was born Aug.

19, 1899, in Rome. N.Y. He graduated from Cornell University in 1920, with a degree in mechanical engineering, and joined Newell Companies of Freeport, 111., in 1924. He retired as president in 1965, but continued to serve as a director for another 17 years. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, June Zimmerman of Naples and Patricia Hershbergpr of Grove City, 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a brother, Newell of Rome, N.Y.'.

He was pre deceased by his two sons, David and Douglas; a grandchild; and his first wife, Alice. Memorial services will 'be Mooring Park Auditorium, Naples, on Saturday, Oct, 16, at 2:30 p.m. Hodges Funeral Chapel of Naples is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice, American Lutig Association or a favorite charity. Max Workman, 78.

of Mar- shalltown, formerly of Cedar Rapids and Washington, Iowa, died of cancer Tuesday morning, Oct. 12, 1999, in Grandview Heights Care Center, Marshalltown. Services: 1:30 p.m. Friday, First Congregational Church, Marshalltown, by the Rev. Gregory Ellcey.

Burial: Riverside Cemetery, Marshall-town, with full military honors. Rosendahl, 74, of Bella Vista, formerly of Mount Vernon, died Wednesday, Sept. 15, 1999, in Northwest Medical Center, Springdale, Ark. Services were Sept, 18 at United Lutheran Church, Bella Vista. The Rev. Richard Jensen officiated.

Survivors include his wife, Ar-lawayne his mother, Han-na Violetta "Violet" Rosendahl of Decorah; two sons, Keith of Decor-ah, and Brian of Kearney, a daughter, Donna Zimmerman of Monticello; and two sisters, Audrey Brickner of Maquoketa and Rose Peterson of Decorah. He worked for Iowa Steel and Iron Works for over 30 years. He and his wife Arly moved to Bella Vista in 1986 from Mount Vernon. Memorials or cards may be sent co Arly Rosendahl, 6 Hamp-stead Lane, Bella Vista, AR 72714. and three grandchildren, Adam and Emily Donaldson and Robert Donaldson-Bush.

Also surviving are two sisters, Thelma Donaldson, Boone, and Lois Lan-dis, Omaha, and a brother, Wilbur Donaldson, St. Paul, Minn. Robert was born Feb. 8, 1932, in Boone, Iowa, and was a graduate of Boone High School. He graduated from Iowa State University with a B.S.

degree in electrical engineering. While attending Iowa State, he was a member of the AIEE-IRE technical society and a distinguished military student in ROTC. After serving as a lieuten-; ant in the Army Signal Corps at Fort Monmouth, N. he was employed as an electrical engineer and program manager at Collins RadioRockwell for 32 years, retiring in 1987. He was a member and supporter of the Cedar Rapids Symphony, Cedar Rapids Museum of Art, History Center and First Presbyterian Church.

An avid sailor, Robert was a member of and served a term as commodore of the former Hawkeye Sailing Club. He was a member of the Great Lakes Cruising Club and was licensed by the Coast Guard as captain of Inland Lakes. He and his wife Shirley sailed extensively through the Great Lakes and subsequently along the Atlantic. Coast, Gulf of Mexico and the Bahamas. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, St.

Luke's Hospice and First Presbyterian Church. Vernon P. Smith 73, of 3227 Carlisle St. NE. died Sunday, Oct.

10. 1999, in Swedish Medical Center. Seattle, from complications of pneumonia. Celebration of life service: 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct.

23, First Lutheran Church. Survivors include his Wife, Phoebe; and children, Ruby Love of Seattle, Vernon of Phoenix, Deborah Smith of Warrenville, Phoebe Porter of Jackson, and Katherine Smith of Warrenville, 111. Also surviving are sons-in-law Alfred Love and Walter Porter; and grandchildren Rachael, Troy, Phoebe Johnathan, Aaron, Andre and Alfred Jr. He was preceded in death by his parents, Vesta and Elmer T. Smith brothers Louis and Elmer Smith and a sister, Fla via.

He was born Feb. 14, 1928, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where he graduated from Franklin High School. He served in the U.S. Army. Vernon received his bachelor of science degree from Coe College.

He married Phoebe Deborah Downs in June 1951 in Elgin, III. Vernon then attended the University of Iowa, where he completed his master's degree in organic chemistry. In 1952, he contracted polio and was confined to an iron lung machine at University Hospitals and Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Iowa City, Iowa. Vernon returned to Cedar Rapids confined to a wheelchair. He was employed by St.

Luke's Methodist Hospital for 35 years as a biochemist and toxicologist in the special chemistry department. Vernon was a very active resident in the Cedar Rapids community before and after his retirement. A memorial is being established in Vernon Smith's name to provide scholarships for minority students to attend Coe College. Donations may also be made in his name to The History Center and African American Heritage Museum. Surviving are his wife, Dee; a daughter, Aileen Schneiter and husband Chuck of, Monticello; a son, Douglas Black and wife Kristy of Monti-cello; a stepdaughter, Kelly Phillips, Tim Phillips and Cathy Kenison; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Carol Ann VanNest. She was born May 4, 1917, in Independence, to Joseph and Nell Diggins Houska. She was married to Lumir "Bud" Miller on Oct. 5, 1938. He died in 1976.

She married Henry Nemec on Feb. 3. 1984. He died in 1992. She retired in 1980 from Mercy Hospital, where she had worked as a registered nurse for more than 27 years.

She was a member of St. Jude Catholic Church, Eagles Auxiliary, St. Mary's Lodge and Mother Cabrini Circle and a past member of St. Bridgit's Circle. She was a 1938 graduate of Mercy Hospital School of Nursing.

A memorial fund has been IN MEMORY OF John W. Backe 101539 101498 Scott and husband Randy of Peoria, two sisters, Judith Freeland and husband Lowell of Winona, and Cathy Black of Manchester; and a brother, Dick Black and wife Helen of Farley. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, Justin, Micaela and Jordan Schneiter, Jacob and Bo Black and Jessica and Jacob Scott; and his faithful companion, Fritz. He was preceded in death by his parents. He was born the son of Paul and Dorothy Specht Black on June 16, 1942, in Monticello, Iowa.

19, 1900, in rural Martelle, Iowa, the daughter of George A. and Estella Chapin Newman. Ruth graduated from Martelle High School and on Feb. 21, 1923, was united in marriage with Gerald James Armstrong in Lisbon. The couple farmed their entire career in the Martelle area in Jones County.

She is survived by two daughters, Faye D. Davis of Martelle and K. Wentzien (Paul) of St. Louis; eight grandchildren: Kim Shipley, Gerald Davis, Kippen Lilly, Redlen Coontz, Elizabeth Wentzien, Jennifer Wentzien, P.J. Wentzien and Margo Wentzien; eight great-grandchildren: Tyler Shada, Kamryn Shada, Brandon Davis.

Kalli Davis, Emily Davis, Stephanie Lilly, Jennifer Lilly and Rhiannon Coontz; and a great-great-grandchild, Cole Davis. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gerald James on May 12, 1977; a daughter. Avis Martin in 1955; two brothers, Clancy Newman and Hubert Newman; and three sisters, Lora Armstrong, Esther Kohl and Mary Gordon. LADORA with me."
