In addition to the screwball, he owned marvelous control and durability. He started 25 games and finished 22 of them. He walked 41 batters and had only one wild pitch in 216 innings! It is ironic Orie didn't win the earned-rnn championship of the league in 1919. He had a 2.79 ERA. The lowest was compiled by a brash left-handed kid named Whitey Ford.

The latter, soon to become a Yankee great, had a 16-5 record and a 1.61 ERA for Bing-hamtori. But the Sporting News later that year honored Orie then 40 years old by naming him its "minor'league player of the year." He received an engraved plaque. Orie's one major-league season was 1943, when he had a 4-13 record for the Philadelphia Phillies. He had already been given his famous nickname of "Old Folks" then. He was not yet 34 years old, but his teen-age teammates on that war-time team respected him for his quiet, mature manner.

Orie managed at Duluth in 1951 and finally retired from the game in 1953 to complete his 25-year love affair with baseball. He received a lifetime membership in the Assn. of Professional Ball Players of America. Orie was a fine citizen and representative of Cedar Rapids as well as a wonderful friend.
