'JFF1CIAL PAPER OP NEW BERN AND CRAVEN COUNTY. New Bern, Aug. 13 1905. THE PRESIDENT'S SERMON. Baltimore Sun The "sermon" of President Roosevelt at Oj'ster Bay last Sunday tends for un limited good, even apart from the wisdom and goodness of the words'he ut tered.

Some time ago a preacher preaching to a congregation of the rich and "smart" at Newport warned them that when they spend Sunday playing games and their lives in frivolity they are doing a great wrong, because their wealth and position causes thoui a ids to imitate them and ape their ways. In this the reverend gentlemen was in er ror. No one seeks to imitate the "smart" set. except those that are feeble in mind. Hut with the President of the United States it is different.

When a man occupying' that exalted place; a man, too, who is admired by millions of his fellow-citizens, meets other men on Sunday afternoon, carrying his Bible with him and reading to them from that holy book, be is striving for that righ teousni'ss which exalteth a nation. He is giving an example which will work for good among millions of men. He is rebuking the irreligious and the frivo lous anil the indifferent. He is pro claiming In the American people, as Joshua, the great leader proclaimed to the assi-mliled tribes of Israel when he called upon them to choose whom they woul.l si-i vc "hut as for me and my house, v.v will serve the lord-" Tin- I'n- lent read to his audience some of the most beautiful passages in the Bible, and his comments upon them and his advice based upon them were sound, instructive and helpful. Among othei things, the President said: "1 feel that the progress of ourcoun try really depends upon the sum of the efforts of the individuals acting by theniM-lves, but especially upon the sum of the efforts of the individuals acting in associations like this for the betterment of themselves, for the betterment of he communities in which they dwell.

There is never any difficulty about the forces of evil being organized. Every time that wc get an organ ization like this, we are doing our part to offset and a little more than offset the forces of evil. The country cannot be a moral country unless the individuals, or a majority of them, who "constitute the state," are moral. Righteousness exalteth a nation, and that means that the people must be righteous or the nation will be debased. The people must live decent lives as individuals or the nation cannot be exalted, and when the President of the United States impresses this upon the young men of th land heis working for the exaltation ol his country.

A Warning to Mothers. Too much care cannot be used with email children during tho hot weather of the summer months to guard against Ixiwel troubles. As a rule it is only riecT-fuutry to gWe the child dose of cantor oil to correct any disorder of the bowels. 1 not use any substitute, but give the old-fashioned castor oil, and see that it is fresh, aa rancid oil nauseates and has a tendency to gripe. 1 If this doe not check the bowel give Chamberlain Oolic, Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy and then a dote of castor oil, and tho disease may be checked in its inrlpiency and all danger avoided.

Tho castor oil and this remedy should be procured at one and kept rendy for instant use at soon at the first indication of any bowel trouble apiicsra.
