Page Four Saturday, -July 8, 1972 Martinsville Daily Reporter, Martinsville, Indiana Gibson Tosses Four-IIitter As Cards Retain Third Spot Sports Comment It) CHRIS MRTI BOBBY FISCHER and Boris Spassky apparently have decided to play some chess after all. I must say that it surprised me when Fischer apologized to Spassky, and he sounded as if he really meant it. But his apology does not overshadow his mulishness; it was merely a sign that his terms had been met. Iceland will probably think twice before inviting Fischer back for a rematch should he lose the 24-game series to Spassky. Besides his obvious genius, Fischer has one other thing in his favor wherever he goes: He is a drawing card, a big neon sign that attracts tourist dollars.

WITH ALL the airline hijackings that have been occurring lately, its a wonder that some enterprising sports promoter hasnt tried to form the Air Piracy League. Weve got everything else, the National League, the American League, the Babe Ruth League, the National Hockey League ad infinitum. I can see it all now. The airports could sell land next to their runways to the highest bidder, who would then erect bleachers and concession stands, just like in a regular ball park. Then the promoter would sell tickets to hijack fans who would have ringside seats to the hijack drama.

Then the promoter could sell television and radio rights, and erect a press box. He could also sell pennants emblazoned with the names of the teams in his league: TWA, United Airlines, FBI, Pan American, etc. The next step would be to have an on-the-spot reporter venture into the hijacked plane and do an interview with the hijacker, crew and passengers. For their appearances before the reporter, the interviewees would receive royalties andor products from whatever company was sponsoring the show. The only problem I see with trying to organize the Air Piracy League is scheduling.

No hijacker is going to call the promoter and say, I want $500,000 across the board and 15 per cent of the gate receipts to hijack Flight 501 out of Chicago next week. Nor would the FBI reveal their schedule and starting line-up for obvious reasons. But judging from the way everything else is organized around sports these days, dont be startled if the Air Piracy League starts selling franchises. Quilici Off to Good Start; Twins Beat Yankees By GARY KALE UPI Sports Writer Frank Quilici was so nervous in his Minnesota managerial debut that he called New York Yankee skipper Ralph Houk: Sir. Then it was Houks turn to look up to Quilici as the Twins celebrated the promotion with a 5-2 victory over the Yankees Friday night.

Harmon Killebrews two-run homer with two out in the seventh inning carried the Twins to victory and made owner Calvin Griffiths choice as a to Bill Rigney look good. Killebrews homer was the big thrill for nothing else could happen after that, Quilici said. Wayne Granger, with two-hit pitching in three innings of relief, won his third straight game. Fritz Peterson was tagged with his 10th loss in 17 decisions. Ben Oglivies two-run homer in the top of the 10th inning carried Boston past California.

The Angeles tied it 3-3 in the bottom of the ninth off Luis Tiant, who won his fourth game of the season. Carlton Fisk also homered for the Red Sox and Ken Berry connected for California. BLACK LUMBER CO. 333 W. Washington St.

Phone 342-3341 Dave Hill Fires 66 To Share Lead bv DICK USIAK FORT ERIE, Ont. (UPI)-Dave Hill hasnt played golf in Canada for four or five years," but you would never know it. Hill looked as though he had spent his entire career playing on Canadian courses Friday as he fired a second-round 66 to share the top spot with Lou Graham in the $150,000 Canadian open golf classic at the Cherry Hill Club. Hill and Graham came in with 136, six under the par 71 course. Gay Brewer was one stroke back at 137 and cigar-chomping Charley Sifford was deadlocked with Lenny Thompson, Bobby Mitchell, and Bruce Crampton in fourth place at 138.

Bunky Henry, who burned up the course with an opening round 65, struggled through an erratic three-over-par 74 and was tied with six others at 139. Arnold Palmer and defending champion Lee Trevino, who attracted most of the 15,800 spectators in the gallery, finished with two-round totals of 142, even par. The usually outspoken Hill crammed five birdies and 13 pars into a round which he said wasnt a great playing round. Hill said he now plays without a glove because I seem to hold onto the club better. He added that he used a shot to get out of the rough on the 17th which he learned from A1 Balding.

Theres no sense in revealing these secrets while the tournament still has two days remaining, he added in declining to specify the type of shot he used. Graham said he played well on the front nine but had a hard time on the backside. They had some pretty good pin placements today, he said. He had a bogey on the par-five 18th and commented with a note of levity that they couldnt have found a better place for the pin on the 18th if they had stayed out there month. A total of 73 golfers survived the second round cut off mark of 147.

Bob Panasiuk of Windsor, paced the four Canadians who made the cut off with a two-under 140. Masaji Ozaki of Japan shot a 78 for a 36-hole total of 11-over-par 153 and failed to make the cut. Evonne Will Come to Indy INDIANAPOLIS I -Australias Evonne Goolagong, last years Wimbledon queen and runnerup this year, is expected to play in the National Clay Courts tennischampionships here next month. Tourney chairman Stanley Malless notified local officials from London Friday that Miss Goolagong definitely would compete here for the first time. seven hits in the nightcap to gain his second straight victory.

In the opener, Gene Alley hit a three-run homer and Milt May, filling in for catcher Manny Sanguillen, had a five-for-five performance, Dave Cash, Gene Clines and A1 Oliver each had three hits. Jack Aker, taking over with runners on first and second in the ninth, snuffed out a Cincinnati rally to preserve Chicago starter Burt Hootons seventh victory of the season. Sutton pitched a three-hitter and was backed by a 13-hit attack as Los Angeles defeated New York. Sutton allowed only a bunt single by Bud Harrelson in the first and singles by Ed Kranepool in the eighth and Harrelson in the ninth in posting his 10th victory against four defeats.
