THURSDAY, MAY 2, 1946. IRONWOOD DAILY GLOBE, IRONWOOD, MICH. ELEVEN Lord Boswell Is Derby Favorite Ponder Chances Of Dark Horses By SID FEDEH Louisville. Ky. "Knock-Down-the-Favorite" club moved in for its annual Kentucky derby delirium today and decided that if Lord Boswell is going to lose, it might very well be something like Dark Jungle who would do it.

Now. the KDTF fraternity was just as dizzy, at the moment, as anyone else in this derby-daffy city. The withdrawal of the popular In Ernest yesterday, on top of the previous elimination of Mist O'Gold, figured to make Saturday's scramble easier for Lord what with two of his classier challengers scratched and the expected muddy track threatening others. Incidentally, not since handy Earl Sande had to pull Stagehand out in 1938 has there been so much sympathy as was felt for Owner Warren Wright and Trainer Ben Jones when they had to scratch their pint-sized giant-killer. In Earnest.

It was especially directed at Plain Ben. who could have tied Derby Dick Thompson's record of saddling four derby winners if In Earnest had hit the jackpot. WIDE OPEN AFFAIR And with him gone, this derby dug into its pre-race stretch all dressed up as the widest open affair Col. Matt Winn has put on in many a May. With the trainers starting their usual "stall-talking" nervousness over realization that each has a derby horse within two days of getting to the post, the picture found any one of 14 of the expected 17 starters given a chancechance to wind up with that necklace of roses and a 400 paycheck (if all 17 are hand.) The one to beat is, of course, the sturdy, stretch-running Lord Boswell from the barn of cosmetics queen Mrs.

Elizabeth Graham. But there are any number of experts--self-styled and otherwise-who point out that the son of Boswell, after being on vacation since last November, came back with tough mile-and-an-eighth in the Blue Grass stakes last Thursday, and followed it right up with another rough mile drill over Churchill Downs' gooey going yester day. TOUGHER TIME What's more, they say he'll have a tougher time finding room to FELLER HURLS HO-HITTEH AGAINST YANKEES--Bob Feller, Cleveland Indians star right hand hurler, signs autographs in locker room after pitching no hit, no run game against the Yankees in New York. His battery partner, Frankie Hayes' homer in 9tii inning was the only score of game. (NEA Telephoto) run through 16 other horses than he did in sailing past a comparative handful in the Blue Grass.

Which would mean that some one of Lord B's closer rivals might give him the horse laugh--something, to say. like the come- from-behind Texan, Assault, or romping Rippey, flashy winner of the derby trial mile Tuesday, or front-running Hampden from Delaware, or Spy Song, who didn't show too much heart in the trial, or even his own stable-mate, big and rangy Knockdown, despite the fact he hasn't had too much work since March. But that's not what the KDTF club wants. It tries to tell you anything as open as this race almost has to uncover a winner who'll be as overlooked as an orphan by the betting boys and girls. Which is where Dark Jungles comes in, although if you're playing that system, it might just as well be With Pleasure, the Chicago candidate who ran a steady third in the trial in his first 1946 job, or Pellicle, who was second in the Blue Grass, or Marine Victory, who can take off out in front with any of them.

Hanover Wins Again At Santa Anita Track Arcadia. Calif. --(IP)-- Ensign Hanover, undefeated pacing star from Castleton farms, Lexington, rang up his second win of the Santa Anita grand circuit meet with a two-length decision over Charming Scot in a mile race yesterday. Odds-on favorite Ensign Hanover was timed in 2:03.2. As 1945 two-year old champion pacer, Ensign Hanover won four straight.

Driven by Sep Palin, the winner returned S3.20 staright. The featured mile and one-sixteenth -trot was won by Axomite, consistent stepper from the Newport stock farm, South Plainfield, N. J. Acomite paid $4.60 to win. Johnson Picks Conn Over Louis Former Champ Raps Stance New York Jack Johnson is back with the fleas.

No, they're not on Li'l Arthur, although the old heavyweight champion avers they're better company than many of the insective currently infesting his first love, the fight racket, "As Gene Tunney would say, they ain't as pediculous--if you get what I mean," says the daddy of defensive heavyweights, amazingly unmarked following more than 250 battles and 32 turbulent years of ring wear and tear. A hearing aid is about the only thing different noted in Johnson's appearance, and he attributes his being hard of hearing to a third atack of pneumonia in Minneapolis a half dozen years ago. He carries his 68 years surprisingly well, wears glasses only when he reads. He still wears a jaunty beret, a custom he acquired in Spain in 1913, while a fugitive from justice. VISIT FLEA CIRCUS You only have to yisit Hubert's Museum and Flea Circus to be briefed on boxing from the turn of the century up to the up-coming return Louis-Conn match at Yankee Stadium, June 19, for there hasn't been a closer student of it, and Johnson has never lost touch.

You pay 20 cents and go down into the basement to see the man who once had the world heavyweight championship and $1,500,000. Louis and Conn? "Conn can beat Louis if he trains properly--for speed of foot and hand. He must hit and block like the old-timeri did, shoot his right hand only from where it is in the blocking position. I can't understand the manager or train er who sent Conn out to slug with Louis when he had the title in his grasp in the 13th round, or why Conn would do such a thing on his own. Nobody ever gained anything getting hit.

'Louis' stance is all wrong. As a matter of fact, he hasn't any. His feet are too close together. He too square, has no backdrop. He can be spun in any direction, is easily knocked off balance and down, HANDS TOO CLOSE "Louis holds his hands too close to his chin, lacks the tremendous advantage enjoyed by the boxer who properly uses his left hand like the rudder of a boat, and is in position to move quickly in any direction." Like a lot of other people, says it is ridiculous for Mike Jacobs to charge $100 for Louis and Conn without either of them qualifying in at least one real match following a five-year absence from the battle pit.

Li'l Arthur undoubtedly recalls Jim Jeffries' pitiable performance against him in Reno in 1910, after being on the sidelines for six years, This time there's likely to be two hollow shells," comments Johnson, flashing his famous golden smile. Johnson at 63 carries a note in his kick for one purpose. He will bet that he can move into a correct boxing position quicker than anybody who visits the flea circus. And Jack Johnson wishes Joe Louis and Billy Conn would drop into the cellar on West 42nd Street, especially after having been idle for five years. 53 Autos Enter 500-Mile Race Compete May 30 An Indianapolis Indianapolis --OP)-- The Held for the 500-mile race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway May 30 numbered 53 today with the arrival of three entries mailed before the deadline at midnight last night.

Mrs. Graham's six nominees for the Kentucky Derby were in Louisville for the Saturday classic. In addition to the 22 race horses, two stable ponies also perished in the flre.

"Some of the loose and ran -back into the flames," Luddy said. "There was nothing we could do. The barn was a mass of flames when we were awakened." There were no other horses stabled in the vicinity of Mrs.

Graham's barn. Arlington is not in operation at present. Weatherman Unfair To Three-1 League By Associated Press The weatherman says "probable rain," but the personnel of the eight Three-I league baseball clubs hopes his gadgets and the information from his cohorts combine for a double-cross today. It took the league, oldest class circuit in the nation, more than three years to recover from the early inroads of World War II. The past two days rainstorms have laid it almost as low as did the war.

Tuesday one game got underway and lasted five and a half innings before rain stopped it. Yesterday all four games were postponed because of rain or wet grounds. Today the league will try again to swing back into action, with the following schedule: Decatur at Quincy, Davenport at Springfield, Waterloo at Terre Haute, Danville at Evansville. Ruffing's Victory Cheers Yankee Fans New Things are looking up in the New Yfltk Yankee camp today because Red Ruffing's opening victory has given the shaky pitching staff a much- needed boost. The carrot-top from Chicago who celebrates his 42nd birthday Saturday didn't have all his stuff yesterday in beating Cleveland, 6-3, but he had enough to keep the Tribe popping the ball high in the air and hitting harmless grounders most of the time.

Wildness was Buffing's only trouble but it wasn't the lack of control that a rookie shows. Rather it was the lack of a razor sharp edge on his curve ball and the slider that kept missing the corners. "Red pitched a mine game," was Manager Joe McCarthy's post- game comment. "A little wild but still a good game for his first out of the season." -LIQUORS- You'll find on our a stock of nationally-known i key, gin, and cordials. REARDON'S LIQUOR STORE 2564 Hurler.
