SPORTS Cedar Rapids Gazette: Sun Nov. 20, 1 977 5F ix gridders are unanimous All-Metro choices vWJK 1 (in mi ni. Ljt Gregg Trosky By Bob Hersom Gazette seorts writer Cedar Rapids' three Mississippi Valley Conference teams head the 1 977 All-Metro football team. Players from Jefferson, Kennedy and Washington are listed at 22 of the 45 first- and second-team positions, which were' selected by the eight Metro coaches. Moreover, 14 of the 23 first team picks were J-Hawks, Cougars or Warriors.

Eight players from both Kennedy and Washington were honored, and six Jefferson gridders were named. The J-Hawks, Cougars and Warriors finished In a three-way tie for second place in the Valley and had a 15-4 record against teams from outside the Metro area. Kennedy Coach Greg Reed was the unanimous choice of his peers as Metro Coach of the Year, as the Cougars' enjoyed their greatest season. The Metro area coaches also unanimously approved six players, and each played for one of C.R.'s Valley teams. Unanimous picks from Kennedy were offensive tackle Bill Roby and running back Tracy Crocker.

Running back Gregg defensive end Jim Corey and linebacker Jerry Jordan were unanimous selections from Jefferson. Washington defensive lineman Randy Kahler was also a unanimous pick. Crocker and Washington defensive back Jeff Fleckenstein are the only repeaters from last year's first team. Among the Metro schools outside of the Valley, Linn-Mar had seven players named to the two squads, LaSalle and Prairie had five apiece, Marion four and Regis two. On the first defensive team, Marion junior Tom Turner and Mar's Charlie Bullock tied for a backfield spot.

Otherwise, the first team selections were clear cut. Turner and Regis defensive end Jim Corey Kennedy back Jeff Knudtson was the Cougars' safety and he led the conference in interceptions with a school-record 'seven. "Jeff made all of our decisions on defense," said Reed, "and he personally saved our wins over Clinton and Wash with interceptions." Washington back Jeff Fleckenstein was the Metro area's only first team all-stater. Jeff, a Warrior co-captain, led the team in tackles. Marion back Tom Turner "has the speed and tenacity to play both ways," said Indians Coach Bob Thur-ness.

"We broke our school record for interceptions this year and Tom was a big reason why." Tom totaled 270 yards pass receiving. Linn-Mar back Charlie Bullock "was our secondary almost all by himself at times," said McCoy. "He was the fastest kid on our team and, pound-per-pound, the toughest." Charlie had six interceptions. Tracy Crocker ton "was our bread and butter back," said Lions Coach Tex McCoy. Jeff rushed for 616 yards, averaging 6.1 per carry.

And a look at the first team defensive picks: Wash lineman Randy Kahler was second on the team in tackles. "There wasn't an offensive tackle in the league who could contain him," said Sheets. Randy was named to the second all-state team. Kennedy lineman Mike Vance "is big and strong," said Reed, "but what really was so amazing was his quickness. He was unanimous all-conference and I think the best tackle in the league.

We didn't blitz our linebackers because nobody in the league could handle Mike." Prairie lineman Scott Hamilton "is the best athlete I've ever coached," said Prairie Coach John Oertel. "He was a two-year regular for us, he led us in tackles, he can bench press 310, military press 210 and he's a student." Scott was named second team all-state. Jefferson end Jim Corey intercepted five passes, had 30 solo tackles and 19 assists. Regis end Mike McGrath "was a real smart ball player and awfully agressive," said Royals Coach Tom Good. "Not many people ran around Mike on the outside." Marlon linebacker Doug Murray was two-year starter for the Indians and a unanimous all-Wamac Conference choice.

He averaged over nine tackles. Jefferson linebacker Jerry Jordan "was definitely our best all-around defensive player," said Fisk. Illogical as it sounds, Jerry a unanimous all-Metro pick failed to make a Valley honor team. Kennedy linebacker Randy Schultz was the Cougars' "Sam," or strong-side backer. He was their third-leading tackier and had three interceptions.

Randy Kahler "led our team in downfield blocks," said Warrior Coach Wally Sheets. Washington end Bruce Mlms "is one of the toughest kids and best wide receivers I've ever had play for me," said Sheets.

The 4.6 sprinter led the Mississippi Valley Conference by catching 21 passes for 323 yards. Linn-Mar end Rod Fedderson scored six touchdowns and set school records by catching 21 passes for 372 yards. Washington quarterback Todd Stout "throws the football as well as Kyle Skogman and Dan Fletcher did," said Sheets, referring to a pair of former first team all-staters he coached. Kennedy running back Tracy Crocker "set every rushing record we have at Kennedy," said Reed. "We wanted to nominate him for Gazette Prep of the Week, but he refused it.

He said if we named him we'd have to name 15 other guys, too. That's the kind of kid he is. He's a blue-chipper, and we'll be hearing about him for years to come." Tracy, who ran for 1,070 yards this year, started at tailback in his final 13 prep games and rushed for 1,618 yards. Overall in his career he carried for over 2,000 yards and 24 touchdowns. He led the Valley in rushing for two straight years.

Most Metro area fans were amazed that he wasn't named first team all-state. He was a second team selection. Jefferson running back Gregg Trosky "is the best running, back we've had at Jefferson in at least 10 years, I'm sure of that," said J-Hawks Coach Jack Fisk. "And not only is he a tremendous back, he's a tremendous young man." Gregg totaled 1,147 yards as a senior: 837 rushing and 310 pass receiving. He scored 92 points, just two shy of the conference record, and earned third team all-state recognition.

Debbie Vetter of Iowa State came in 10th with a 18:01.0. Mills outdistanced second-place finisher Brenda Webb of Tennessee by 33.8 seconds.

For the first time in AIAW history, the first 15 finishers were designated Ail-Americans. Penn State finished second in team standings. Adams wins NAIA run KENOSHA, Wis. (AP) Garry Henry of Pembroke State set a course record of 24 minutes, 11 seconds for five miles Saturday in winning the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics country championships. Adams State of Colorado, with four finishers in the top 25, captured the team title with 102 points.

Jefferson's Randy Dostal and Gary Sweeney, both second team defensive picks, were the only other juniors listed on the top two squads. A look at each first team selection on offense: Kennedy center Mark Lukes was a two-year regular who never missed a game. "Because of the way Mark performed," said Cougars Coach Greg Reed, "we never went into a ball game figuring we had to double-team a noseman." Regis guard Mark Williams is the fourth and final Williams brother to play for the Royals. He followed older brothers Joe, Bill and Mike.

Mike was a first team all-Metro quarterback and linebacker in 1975 and, as a junior, Bill was an honorable mention running back and linebacker in 1966. Mark was third team all-state this year. All four brothers suffered injuries that shortened their prep careers. LaSalle guard Al Garin "was the guy we wanted involved in the play when we had to gain yardage," said Lancers Coach Tom Kopatich. Kennedy tackle Bill Roby "was our holler guy," said Reed.
