Notre Dame, drilling for this game since spring, effectively bottled up Army's touchdown terrors, big Doc Blanchard and shifty Glenn Davis, when the chips were down. The Cadets did likewise for Lujack and his hardhitting backs. But this wasn't a game of the backs who usually get all the glory.

It was a game of battling linear No harder tackles ever have been made or harder blocks thrown than were seen on the turf of Yankee Stadium this chilly, cloudy afternoon. The going was tough but it was a cleanly fought battle with only tone penalty for unecessary roughness against Army in the closing seconds. Army started out like it was going to make fast work of its undefeated opponent. Emil Sitko, one of a horde of fast running Notre Dame backs, fumbled in the first period and Elwyn Rowan, subbing at right halfback for the injured Ug Fuson, recovered for Army on the Notre Dame 24. A bad Lujack punt which traveled only 28 yards to the Army 43 gave the Cadets another chance. But with a foot needed on fourth down, Sitko intercepted a Davis pass. Later in the period, Army drove to the Notre Dame 40 but there Tucker fumbled and that was the last threat of the game.
