With four class A and four class teams already in the fold, the title tournament field will be completed with eight more games at the four sub-state tournaments tonight. Safely past sab-sUe semifinal rounds were: (A) Harlan. Waverly, Iowa City and East Sioux City. (B) Wiota. Montour, Preston and Livermore.

Tonight's contestants: At Atlantic: (A) Ames, the defending champion, vs. Council Bluffs (Abraham Lincoln). (B) Diagonal vs. Bagley. At Cedar Falls: (A) Cedar Falls vs.

Marshalltown. (B) Geneseo vs. Lansing. At Iowa City: (A) Clinton vs. high victory lies in the fact that; two "home town" teams could appear in the state finals here next; week.

To bring about that state of affairs, St. Mary's of Iowa City must beat Cra wfordsville in the class opener on tonight's pro gram which starts at 7:30. Back in 1941 when only eight; teams qualified for the finals, Mason City had both its public high school and St. Joseph's in the final round, but they were! not playing before a home town i T20NKIA CAOTWReHT, 163 ALLSTON CAMBRIDGE, MASS. Montour Puts' i Out Ventura; Waverly Cops By Roy McHugh.

CEDAR FALLS Two of the more expertly-coached high school teams in northeast Iowa Montour and Waverly joined the vanguard of state finalists Friday night as Ventura's one-man team and Newton dropped out of the running. Class Montour eliminated Ventura, 41-31, and class A Waverly gave both barrels to Newton, 66-30, in a pair of semi-final sub-state encounters at the Iowa State Teachers fieldhouse. A crowd of 3,500. including standees, was on hand. Lansing and Ceneseo, in class and Marshalltown and Cedar Falls, in class are the lower-braeket semi-finalists here, and tonight they will come to grips as the tournament ends.

The problem of handling- WU- lard Gizel, Ventura's center and scoring maestro, caused a few wrinkled foreheads in the Montour sector Friday night. For 184 minutes the nifty little Cardinals took care of him well. The best he could muster in that stretch was a free throw, and Coach C. L. Ferguson's stalwarts methodically pieced together a 21-9 margin.

Then with two and a half minutes of the third period accounted for, Gizel began scoring. Although he finished with 17 points, there was never much doubt as to which team was going to win. Gizel started too late. The difference between the teams in the third and fourth periods remained seven or more points. Early in the final quarter, Montour stretched it to 15, but the Vikings came back with nine points in a row before Bob Tvedt, the Cards' money player, turned a misdirected Ventura pass into a field goal for Bill Downs.

Several seconds later, Downs again broke under the basket to poke in a layup, and the Cardinals then knew they'd be going to Iowa City next week.
