(AP) -There is little doubt Mark C. Bethune, wanted for the murder of one Detroit police officer and wounding of five others, was here when another man wanted for the same crimes was shot and killed by a patrolman Friday, police said. John Percy Boyd, 23, was shot and killed along with his half-brother, Owen Winfield, 28, of Atlanta, when a police officer stopped him for routine questioning. Police said Boyd and Winfield tried to shoot the officer.

Atlanta Police said Sunday they are now trying to determine if Bethune is still in the area or has fled. Bullets from the weapons of both men killed in the Shootout have been turned over to Detroit Police Lt. John Maniaci Boyd used a sawed-off carbine rifle and Winfield used a revolver, police said. Maniaci, who was in Louisiana on an extradition case, was sent to Atlanta after the shooting. Police said in event there is a trial in Detroit the weapons would be turned over for use as evidence.

Atlanta police said their in. vestigation is over, but added they will continue to aid Detroit authorities in a search for Bethune. Boyd, Bethune and Hayward Brown, 18--captured in Detroit last month--were all charged in connection with the Dec. 4 and Dec. 27 shootouts.

Man in Jail Candidate MADISON, Wis. (AP) Roy Schenk, a candidate for Dane County executive apparently is not going to let steel bars, alarms, double locks and security guards stand in his way. Schenk, 42, serving a 30-day sentence in Dane County jail, issued a letter from his cell Saturday to let everyone know he's still running. "There appears to be some uncertainty in some people's minds as to whether I am still actively pursuing the office of the office of county executive," Schenk 'wrote to a Madison newspaper. "Let me assure you I am very actively pursuing the position." Schenk is serving the sentence on a charge of supplying a false income tax withholding form.

He said he is still setting up "personal appearances" in his campaign for the county's highest post by having friends carry tape-recorded statements from him to any group that wants them. Deaths Roman J. Miller CHEHALIS, Wash. (AP) -Retired Cmdr. Roman J.

Frequently, the person who has gained wealth, independence, respect, and security in his community through his business, has done so simply by virtue of being in the right place at the right time, and having at that moment, the common sense and timing to take advantage of his opportunity. How many times have we looked at others around us, seemingly more fortunate in life than we, yet certainly no more able or intelligent, and asked ourselves why that person? Many times the answer is --being in the right place at the right time, or getting in at the beginning, or making a decision when a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity appears.

We have that opportunity to to the individual who can meet our requirements.
