The fourth-ranked Michigan Wolverines saw to that Saturday when they ended four years of frustration at the hands of Ohio State hy humiliating Hayes and his eighth-ranked Buckeyes 22-0. During his visits to the Rose Bowl the last four years, Hayes not only came out on the short end three times but also had several run-ins with the West Coast media. Meanwhile, Michigan stayed home each winter except for an Orange Bowl loss last year.

"This doesn't totally erase the frustration of the past four years, but it does erase a lot of the bad feelings we had, said linebacker Jerry Zuver, who ran for a two-point conversion following Michigans second touchdown and Intercepted a pass to set up the third. The Wolverines dressing room was an emotional place with cheers and tears alike. "Ive never felt happier, said a tear ful Jim Smith, whose 16-yard wingback reverse set up Michigan's second score and who ran the Wolverines out of several holes with shifty punt returns. "Theres no way I could anticipate this kind of feeling because wed never beaten them since Ive been at Michigan, so all I had was heartbreak. could be in the first half.

But Michigan turned in a near -perfect second half, including a pair of three-yard touchdown runs by Russell Davis in the third period. "Our execution was better in the second half, said Coach Bo Schembechler. "It wasnt any brilliant strategy, just good execution. This has to rank with the great victories weve had, but we wont get the real impact of it until we get home because we werent allowed to bring anyone down here. He was referring to Michigans allotment of only 4,000 seats in an arena that holds almost 90,000.

A record Ohio stadium of 88,250 the 50th consecutive sellout plus a national television audience saw the Buckeyes suffer their worst defeat at home since a 41-6 loss to Purdue early in the 1967 campaign. The Hawks routed Michigan State with Butch Caldwell, given up for lost when his right shoulder was "probably dislocated a week earlier, leading the way with brilliant quarterbacking.

"My shoulder hurt like hell! said Butch, who completed 7 of 12 passes for 111 yards and ran tor 49 more. "Every time I moved it felt like somebody was tearing my arm off. "I didnt throw a pass until Thursday. 1 just took some center snaps Tuesday, and Wednesday I went through some of our running plays. But I was determined to play in my last game at Iowa.

I really didnt know until just before the kickoff today that the coach was golng to let me play. The Hawkeyes completed a 5-6 season the first time since 1969 that Iowa has won five games with a big batch of heroes. Tamas Jon Lazar scored two TDs and emerged as the teams leading rusher for the season by gaining 94 yards on 11 plays, one of them a 40-yard shocker off the "boomeroosky fake-punt play that stunned a crowd of 48,412. Lazar did it with one shoe "Our fake fooled everybody except Michigan States back-side end, he laughed. "He grabbed me by the right foot and held on.

I thought, golly, Ive got to get at least a yard or two for the first down. "So 1 finally Jerked my foot right out of my shoe and took off. He was welcome to my shoe. 1 had great blocking ail the way to the goal. The rambunctious soph also caught two key third-down passes from Caldwell and recovered a fumble on the opening kickoff.

It may have been an AP Loerphofo (arrow), ran 40 yards for TD omen that things were going to be different from the last two weeks when Iowa lost to Wisconsin and Purdue. Nick Quataro finished up his three-year career at Iowa in a burst of glory. And he already held the tong-field goal record, 54 yards, set against Penn State in 1975. I told him to let me know before the game if his shoulder was hurting so much he couldnt play, I didn't hear from him, so we started out with him at quarterback wondering how long he could go. "Actually, we were living on borrowed time with several of our starters. We used Joe Hufford (bad knee) in the first half. Yes, Billy Schultz (ribs) got In there, too, and he caught a big pass. But three Cyclone fumbles led to 21 of the Cowboys points and an OSU interception its own end zone squelched Iowa States bid to pull within seven points at 35-28 four minutes into thp final quarter. "I was upset by only one play in this game, said Iowa State coach Earle Bruce, "and that was the interception in the end zone. He emphasized the point by slamming his right hand down on the school desk he was sitting in. "That was a bad, bad play, continued Bruce, who admitted he called it.
