it it it THE CAST OF "Chicago Story might have felt right at home during filming of "Polar Bear Alert," the National Geographic Special scheduled for Wednesday at 7 p.m. on IPBN. The special was filmed in Churchill, Manitoba, where citizens annually cope with migrating polar bears. While polar bears look cuddly, they are widely acknowledged to be one of the world's largest, most dangerous carnivores. A mature male can stand 100 feet, weigh as much as 1,200 pounds, eat 50 pounds of meat at one time, and run faster than the fastest man.

One swipe of an enormous paw can kill an 800-pound seal. In the fall, the polar bear population of western Hudson Bay begins to move northward to meet the pack ice that will soon be forming on the bay. (The bears will spend the next six months on the ice feeding on seals, their main food source.) Churchill, an important grain port lying in the path of the bears fall migration route, makes elaborate preparations to cope with the creatures without harming them. Citizens have teamed to board up their windows and keep a close watch on their children during the six-to-eight week period the bears remain in the area. In "Polar Bear Alert," one man demonstrates how nail-studded boards prevent the animals from entering his house.

A young mother walks her child with an armed escort. And school children learn important rules about bear safety. To keep track of the bears as they approach the Churchill environs, the Manitoba Department of Natural Resources sets up a bear patrol on a 24-hour alert. The local Royal Canadian Mounted Police cooperate in this yearly vigilance. The patrol maintains a hotline, and members rush to the scene when a bear is sighted.

Most If you watch most awards programs just for a a glimpse of stars and celebrities, then "Night of 100 Stars, Monday at 7 m. on ABC, will be right up your binoculars. Why? Youll be able to watch the over-200 film, TV, music and stage stars as they arrive at Radio City Music Hall as well as when they perform on stage for the spectacular event benefiting the Actors Fund. And what youll watch comes under the jurisdiction of Clark Jones, Emmy Award-winning director who is in 'charge of the telecast. Jones is no stranger to great moments in TV history.

Almost 30 years ago, he put together live and on two networks for two hours what he calls the very first spectacular, which celebrated Ford Motor Company's 50th anniversary. "1 have always thought it was the most exciting show I've ever done, he says. "The year was 1953. It was done in the Center Theater, which was the sister theater to Radio City right across the street before it was tom down. But this one this 'Night of 100 Stars tops it.

There are curious parallels, Jones notes, between Fords 50th anniversary show and ABC's Centennial Celebration of the Actors' Fund of America. "Considering they were almost 30 years apart, he says, "there are remarkable coincidences. The Ford show was the one in which Mary Martin and Ethel Merman (both in 'Night of 100 Stars) sang their famous duet. It had a Broadway element and so does this. That one had a puppet element 'Kukla, Fran and Ollie and this one has Miss Piggy trading quips and singing with opera star Placido Domingo." Jones, who was first interviewed shortly after the conclusion of the Radio City Music Hall production, later described the show's opening scenes.

There will be a montage made up of scenes showing the arrivals of the 200 stars from all over the world, he says, then another montage of the stars driving up in Iimos on red carpeting to the stage door entrance of the Music Hall. "One of my jobs is to edit the show in proper sequence for air and to make sure it is all contiguous and fast-paced, as Im sure it will be," Jones says. This is a show without a host. It helps the pace and it helps the editing." Nine cameras were used to videotape the program one front and centef, at a stage level, considered very favorable for any of the dance numbers or parading, like the Fashion Show with Gina Lollobrigida, Linda Evans, Brooke Shields, Catherine Bach, Susan Anton, Victoria Principal, Cicely Tyson and many other stars. Two other cameras were about midway into the orchestra seats 20 to 25 rows back.

They were called the workhorses: one for closeups, the other for full figures. A fourth camera was propped at the rear of the orchestra the full-stage camera. Camera Nos. 5 and 6 were down near the stage, in the audience, each at opposite sides for side angle shots. Camera 7 was up in the third mezzanine of Radio City situated there for the glory pictures, the spectacles.

And cameras 8 and 9 were stage right and stage left. It was suggested to Jones that ABCs NFL "Monday fight Football doesnt use many more cameras, 11 or possibly 12, if you include the blimp. Jones says with a laugh, "Well, Radio City is almost as big as a stadium. In fact, one of the seven New York Yankees on our show walked into Radio City at rehearsal I think it was Bucky Dent and he said, This is bigger than Yankee Stadium. OCCASIONALLY THIS WINTER, it may have seemed that our quota of snow would be taller than Yankee Stadium.

However, most of us are used to Iowa's crazy winters and if we dont grin, we at least bear them. But consider certain California actors who are used to "baring winters on the sunny coast actors like those found in "Chicago Story," which premieres Saturday at 7.30 p.m. on NBC. The series was produced on location in the Windy City. 1 couldn't believe any place could be so cold," says John Cutts, producer of the new 90 minute weekly series, intruders are run off before they reach town" Persistent were a number of days we worked outside in a problem bears tranquilized.nT SnSS to holding wind-chill factor of 60 below Even the pens.

Tate) had to uncufT a prisoner and then drive away. Instead, Lawson's hands were so numb he couldnt hold the cufTs keys. And when he finally got to his car it was too cold to start." Conquering the citys famous snowfalls was easy by comparison. One day, Cutts recalls, it was snowing sc hard the director asked the blurred figure of a policeman to help him stop some traffic. When the wind shifted it turned out the policeman was actually Dennis Franz, who stars- in the series as Patrolman Joe Gilland.

Recalls Maud Adams, who plays Dr. Judith Bergstrom. "I was pretty fortunate because I was mostly inside in the hospital. But I remember one day I worked outside with (co-star) Molly Cheek. In the middle of a scene, my face was suddenly frozen stiff and I couldn't talk." Vincent Baggetta, who plays public defender Lou Pelligrino, says, "Ive been back in California for two weeks now and I'm still thawing out.
