HE WON '300 ANDAOW WAMTC McDowell Records Sixteen Strike Outs The Oakland Athletics acted Wednesday night like they had never seen Sam McDowell and, in fact, they never had seen t-h-i-s Sam McDowell. T-h-i-s McDowell no longer was the herky-jerk Cleveland Indian pitcher who threw 90 per cent fast balls about half of which were over the plate. In his stead was a McDowell who mixed four different pitches with a new smooth delivery and got most of them over the plate. As a result, the Cleveland problem child of the last two seasons struck out a major league season high 16 batters, didn't walk one and pitched a glittering three-hitter that gave the Indians a 3-1 victory. The strikeout total equlalled i game high for his career and the game marked the first in which he did not walk a batter over a nine-inning span.

Combination of Pitches McDowell explained that he threw 30 curves, 20 sliders, 20 changeups and 49 fast balls and pointed out that the total of 119 pitches "must be the lowest of my career for nine innings." John Odom retired 15 Indians in order but they scored in the sixth when McDowell singled home Chico Salmon and added two runs in the seventh on three singles and a passed ball. The Detroit Tigers edged the Minnesota Twins 3-2, the Baltimore Orioles down the New York Yankees 6-1, the California Angels defeated the Boston Red Sox 5-3 and the Chicago White Sox topped the Washington Senators 4-1, in other American League games. Feature Syndicate Burke, who is making one of r.is rare playing appearances, said his personal pick in the f'eld of 97 was Roberto De Vicenzo.

The 45-year-old Argen tine has the power to conquer the par 71 Cypress Creek course and the patience to play the greens. De Vicenzo, who lost a chance to win the Masters in a playoff because he signed an incorrect scorecard, said he was playing well, but said Burke's pick was based on friendship. "Jimmy (Demaret) did the same thing last year and lost bis trousers," De Vicenzo said. Jack Nicklaus, the biggest name in the tournament, said r.e was beginning to Dut his Same together. Nicklaus is a long hitter who never has played well at Champions, finishing 39th last year and 27th in the 1966 inaugural.

"I'm getting close to playing well," Nicklaus said during a practice round on the eve of the tournament. "I'm hitting the ball better than at any time I've come to Houston." Gary Player, who hasn't won a U.S. tournament since the 1965 Open, also is rounding into form after seven weeks on the tour. He is playing here for the first time. The perennial favorite, Arnold Palmer, is missing because of an ailing hip.

Mike Pavella Begins 12th Year As 'Pro' Nemacolin Country Club officially opens its 49th season Sunday (May 5) and it promises to be another banner year at the family type resort in Beallsville. To mark the occasion, a Two Jacks and a Jill golf tournament will be the main attraction, followed by a nospitality hour, buffet dinner and dancing to the music of Lou Laurence and his orchestra. For the first time in history, Nemacolin has a full membership of 300-plus certificate-holding members and now has a waiting list. This in itself is proof that Nemacolin has come to be recognized as one of the better and popular clubs -in Western Pennsylvania. Rated one of the best-conditioned courses in the Pittsburgh area, Nemacolin is continuing a capital improvements program that was started more than five years ago.

The only major personnel change since the close of the 1967 season was the appointment of Joe Aiello, formerly of Nottingham, as club manager. A Pittsburgher, Aiello becomes only the fourth manager in Ne-macolin's 49-year history. Mike Pavella of Meadow Lands, voted "Golfer of the Year" by the Tri-State PGA in 1967, is starting his 12th consecutive season as club professional. One of the top pros in the tri-state district Pavella ranks only behind Jimmy Devlin (1924-39) in tenure at NCC. Pavella's staff includes starters Johnny Saniga, Rich-eyville, and Patsy (Babe) Naddeo, Ellsworth, whose affiliation with Nemacolin began as caddies in 1924 and 1925, respectively.

Mike Pavella just 16, is assisting his father as Pro Shop assistant. Another former caddie, John Pagac, Richeyville, has been named caddie master and he is being assisted by Jerry Sar gent, also of Richeyville. Prosper Gilli, Charleroi, is embarking on his second successive term as club president. The board of directors also includes Vice President Fred Je-nion, North Charleroi; Secretary treasurer Cliff Moluski, Roscoe; George Abd, Washington; Ed Hursh, Upper St. Clair; Dr.

Tom Park, Brownsville; Paul Inserra, Bethel Park; Jack Roley, Belle Vernon; William Kegel, California. Heading the Women's Golf Association this year is Mrs. Marc Sandler, Pittsburgh. Other officers are Shirley Misen-ko, Labelle, first vice president; Mrs. Norman Golomb, Monongahela, second vice president; Mrs.

Marty Leonard, Bridgeville, recording secretary; Mrs. Mac Weaver, Washington, corresponding secretary; Mrs. John O'Brien, Washington, treasurer. Pipers Put Hawkins In Starting Lineup NEW ORLEANS (UPI) The Pittsburgh Pipers wrapped a bandage around Connie Hawkins' injured knee and put him back in the starting lineup Wednesday and because of that the Pipers are going home today with a chance for the American Basketball Associa tion title.

The Pipers beat the New Orleans Buccaneers 118-112 behind Hawkins' 41 points Wednesday to even the ABA f-nals at 3-3. The deciding game will be played in Pittsburgh Saturday night. Hawkins injured his knee last Thursday in New Orleans when the Bucs beat Pittsburgh 106 105. Hawkins, the ABA most valuable player, sat out Satur day night's game in Pittsburgh, and again the Pipers lost, 111 108. But bacK in 'he lineup wearing yards of tape around his knee, Hawkins surprised everyone, including his coach Vince Cazzetta, and led Pit tsburgh back from a 72-59 halftime deficit.

"I wouldn't have believe it," Cazzetta said. "I thought maybe he had about 30." Cazzetta carefully avoided predictions of the outcome of the championship game. TERMITES BE SURE! CALL KILLER KATZ yttw Inanred warranty proltctlm 1 Elco Mfa. Co. Pgh.

Lakers Reach End Of Line INGLEWOOD, Calif. (UPD- The Los Angeles Lakers were in a "must win" situation for tonight's meeting with the Boston Celtics in the sixth game of the National Basketball Association championship. Trailing by a 3-2 margin as a result of Tuesday's 120-117 defeat at Boston, it's the end of the line for the Lakers in the best-of-seven playoff if they lose at the Forum before a sellout crowd. The key to one Lakers' chances rested on the condition of guard Jerry West who sprained an ankle last Sunday the Forum but played Tuesday despite the injury by having a pain-killer injected. West feels he can play under the same condition tonight but if the drug should not relieve the pain in his ankle then the Lakers' may be forced to cancel their plans to go back to Boston for the seventh game Sunday.

The greens are in poor condition because of a sh'ort growing season this spring. Detroit Lions Get Bill Munson DETROIT (UPI) -The Detroit Lions finally have the quarterback they've been after for a year while the Los Angeles Rams hope they've moved a step closer to that elusive Super Bowl.

The Rams sent discontented quarterback Bill Munson, who played out his option behind Roman Gabriel last season. along with a third round draft choice to the Lions Wednesday in exchange for flanker Pat Studstill, halfback Tommy Wat-kins, quarterback Milt Plum, plus Detroit's No. 1 draft choice in 1969. It was the second major deal between the two clubs in less than a year. At the close of training camp last fall, the Lions dealt all-pro defensive tackle Roger Brown to the Rams for three draft choices.

The Lions had been after Munson ever since last year. The Lions' passing fell flat last season, producing only 1,826 yards of a 2,752 season the previous year. Head Coach Joe Schmidt was unhappy with his signal callers Plum and second-year man Karl Sweetan. "We had to give up a lot to get him," Schmidt said. "But I definitely felt that we needed a new quarterback and in my book, Munson was the best one available." Los Angeles has been within a couple games of making the Super Bowl the past two seasons, last year compiling a better record than the pro football champion Green Bay Packers but under the new divisional setup they were nosed out in the playoff game.
