(INS)' The University of Nebraska Innocents Alumni Association called off a scheduled meeting Thursday to discuss the possible naming of Corah usker Footballer Bobby Reynolds to the group after Reynolds himself asked 'that the matter be dropped. Complaints had been voiced because Reynolds was not selected Not at, i -Billy Loes Br Oscar Fraley. NEW YORK (UP) Billy Loes has insisted lor a long-time that hes the hottest thing to hit Brooklyn since' the frankfurter was introduced at Coney Island and today his Dodger teammates have ceased to chuckle at bubbling brashness. The reason 'is that 22-year-old Billy has posted three wins against no defeats in relief performances. And hell tell yftu, rather decisively, that it would be a better record 'than that if he was a regular starter.

Loes, you will gather, is a man who -recognizes his own abilities. He doesnt have Dizzy Deans drawl, colorful tales or blazing fast ball but he does- have Old Diz confidence, in spades. There was talk, early this spring, that he might be sent to the minors. The six foot, one inch youngster would hear none of it Id be wasting my time in the minors," he' proclaimed. If they send me out Ill go get a job somewhere and fhell with baseball By mid-March they thought Manager Charley Dressen was kidding when he said Billy might wind up' with a regular Job.

Dressen might not have believed it himself, for he still was laughing at Loes direct attack when Chuck was looking for an opening: day pitcher. Youve got one right here, Billy exclaimed immodestly. Right here me! Billy didnt start then, or yet. But, after one brief appearance In a game long lost, he since has been called on in three squeakers and won them all. In 14 innings he has permitted but seven hits and only one unearned run.

Loes scored his. first victory against the Giants, taking over in the eighth with Brooklyn trailing by a run and winning out in the 12th. He beat Chicago the same way, going two perfect innings as the Brooks won in the ninth. And, in his last engagement, he went six innings to beat the Cincin nati Reds in the 10th. Even as a high school pitcher who posted five no-hltters in two years, Billy the Kid had no doubt of his ability.

He worked out with the Giants, Phillies and Cards and. when $6,000 was his best bonus offer, set out to get the ante raised. He signed to pitch a game for a semi-pro team and then wired all- clubs to have scouts on hand. They did, as Billy won a five-hitter, and Cleveland offered him $20,000 to sign with them. The Dodgers got him when they topped that offer.

So the next season. 1949, Billy played at Fort Worth and Nashua in the New England league. The next year he rode the Brooklyn bench appearing in ID games. He had no record because, as he explains, those games were already gone when got in. Then came a year in the army, and Loes came back this spring with high and well-advertised expectations.

And as the weeks rolled by his mates began to laugh less and less at his claims. He showed them a good fast ball, a fine curve, nice control and a baffling change up plus the icy nerves of a second story man. Which is why, when the Dodgers laugh today, its with and not at, confident Billy Loes Detreit (2) AB Lloon.as Kolloay.lb Mullin.il Mopes, rf Souchk.3b Lerchen.el Ginsberc.c Priddy.Sb Gray.p Hutchln.p 1 0 3 3 3 3 8 1 1 13 I I I Yost, 3b Busby.cf Jenaen.rl Wilson 41 Vernon. lb Runnels, as Michaels, 2 Grasso.c Hudson, Total 38 11 27 13 Totals 33 6 37 8 gSingled for Hiller, In third. i Walked lor Byerlly la 111th.
