Pqge 18 THURSDAY, DECEMBER 26, 1963 RECORD-EAGLE, TRAVERSE CITY, MICHIGAN U.S., Australia Split Davis Cup Openers Ski Tips by Sigi THE SNOWPLOW IS DEMONSTRATED BY SIGI ENGL tails of the skis. This "unweight- iiig" of the skis will make it easier to get into the proper snow plow position. For variety, try to open the skis and then let them run together again, repeating this or four times during your descent. 1 advise skiers with weak ankles to turn their knees inward slightly; this will help avoid catching the outside edges of the skis, which might result in a fall. NEXT: THE RENTAL QUESTION THE SNOW PLOW By Sigl Engl Director, Sun Valley Ski School This maneuver, unattractive as it looks, is one of the most important exercise for beginners.

When you have learned the snow plow, you have the basis for making your first change of direction, the snow plow turn. No matter how expert may become, you will find the snow plow useful for controlling speed, especially when encountering icy conditions. First practice the snow plow position standing still on a level place. Open the tail ends of the skis and keep the tips together. Next, press your knees forward in the direction of the tips.

Your- hands are about 12 inches in front of your body. Your body is in the center ot the skis and yonr weight is equally divided on both skis. Be careful not to over-emphasize the forward bend of the upper body. Next, pick a very gentle slope of well-packed snow with a long, flat runout. Start with your skis parallel.

After a short run press both heels simultaneously outward. This will push the tails apart bring the tips fairly close together. Don't worry too much if your speed is not greatly reduced; it is not meant to be. Don't make your snow plow too You should get the feeling of the inside edges of the skis brushing lightly over the snow. As you get the feel ot this maneuver, use an "up" motion of your body from the knees the exact time you open the Pontiac Bowling Tournament Site PONTIAC (UPI) The "300 Bowl" here has been named site ot the 3rd annual North American Professional Bowler's Association Open tournament next March 24 2S, it was announced today by the PBA.

The $28,000 event carries a $4,000 first prize in the professional division and $1,000 for first place in the amateur competition. Six Michigan cities, Flint, Saginaw, Ann Arbor, Grand Rapids and Pontiac are being considered as sites for i i a qualifying rounds. McKinley Upset; Ralston Winner ADELAIDE, A A I A (UPI) The United States, looking for its first Davis Cup tennis triumph since 1S5S, was forced to settle for a 1-1 split of the opening challenge round singles matches against Australia today when Roy Emerson upset Chuck McKinley, G-3, 3-C, 7-5, 7-5. Cocky, often temperamental Dennis Ralston of Bakersfield, gave the Yanks the early lead when he blew a two-set load and then rallied to beat 19- year-old John Nevrcombe Australia, 6-4, 6-1, 3-6, 4-G, 7-5. But then Emerson, trailing 4-1 in the third set as Wimbledon champion McKinley of San Antonio, Texas, seemed about to put the Yanks in the driver's seat, staged a stunning comeback to win their battle in two hours and five minutes.

The net effect of the split, watched by a crowd of 7,000 at the Memorial Drive Courts, was to bolster Aussie hopes of keeping the cup. The defending champions ruled slight favorites to win the doubles match Friday. The chunky McKinley, who battled back into condition after reinsuring his back last month to make his first appearance in a Davis Cup challenge round, appeared to be taking command of Emerson when he rallied from his first-set defeat to capture the second and roll to his big lead in the third set. But at this point Emerson, the man tennis'experts were touting a year ago as a possible grand slam champion in 1963, sudde.n- ly began to look that part again. He uncorked some of the most brilliant tennis of his career to win six of the next seven games, breaking McKinley's three times as he did, to take the set.
