7a The Cedar Rapids Gazette. Nov. 25, 1987 Panic disorder has genetic link, of I evidence shows Pulltab lottery game debuts Dec. 7 in bars, clubs in state research has shown that about two-thirds of people with panic disorder have relatives affected by the disorder, he adds. For this study, Crowe and Noyes interviewed family members to confirm a diagnosis of panic disorder and collected blood samples, which were then analyzed with a battery of genetic marker tests by colleagues at Louisiana State University Medical Center in New Orleans.

The strongest linkage to panic disorder was with a protein called alpha-haptoglobin on chromosome 16, Crowe says. The of I scientists are setting up a similar study with another group of families, some of them larger than families in the preliminary study. Crowe says his research team is seeking extended families with five or more people with panic disorder. For more information on participating in the of I study, call IOWA CITY Evidence that suggests a genetic link in the occurrence of unprovoked anxiety attacks, or panic disorder, has been found by University of Iowa psychiatric researchers. In a study of 26 families with a history of panic disorder, Drs.

Raymond Crowe and Russell Noyes, psychiatry professors in the UI College of Medicine, said they have found evidence that merits further investigation that panic disorder may be inherited, or genetic in origin. The preliminary study results were published in the November issue of Archives of General Psychiatry. Although these preliminary results have potentially important implications for further genetic research on panic disorder, Crowe explains that they hold few immediate implications for its treatment or prevention. He adds that no less important than identifying the closely linked gene is the fact that they were able to exclude close linkage between panic disorder and 18 genetic marker sites. "These findings are important because tjiey provide directions as to where one need not search as linkage research on panic disorder proceeds, Crowe says.

"The first step is to identify a gene responsible for the disorder. Then some day you might be able to figure out what exactly that gene does and how it affects the disease process. About one in 20 people suffers from panic disorder, which affects three times as many women as men. The disorder is characterized by panic attacks, periods of irrational terror, sometimes even in familiar surroundings. Panic disorder can take the form of fear of being alone, fear of being in crowds or fear of traveling, specifically known as agoraphobia.

THE OF I researchers noticed from a previous of I study on panic disorder that many of the participants relatives also had panic disorder, Crowe says. Other Iowa Lottery, Stanek told the board, which unanimously endorsed the idea. He estimated potential gross revenues from the pulltabs at $40 million, but said the states profit would be much lower, about $4 million to $5 million, because 65 percent of revenues are returned to players in prizes. STANEK SAID the tickets will be available only in bars, clubs, fraternal organizations or bingo parlors. Beginning Dec.

7, the pulltabs will be offered to such establishments that already have lottery licenses. After that, the lottery will take applications from similar establishments that dont now have lottery licenses. Later, the lottery would recruit other bars and clubs that havent applied. The number of establishments offering the pulltabs is expected to number about 500 initially and eventually grow to 1,000 Stanek said. The tickets now sell for 50 cents apiece and offer maximum prizes of $50.

Plans call for two new games to be offered beginning Nov. 30. One will be a 25-cent ticket with a top prize of $25 and the other will be another 50-cent ticket with a top prize of $100. By Judy Daubenmier Gazette Des Moines Bureau DES MOINES In a move that could boost sales as much as $40 million a year, the Iowa Lottery Board has decided to sell "pulltab lottery tickets statewide. Iowa Lottery Commissioner Ed Stanek said Tuesday the pulltabs will be available in bars and clubs beginning Dec.

7. The tickets have been available since Oct. 12 in bars and clubs in seven Iowa counties Pottawattamie, Shelby, Cerro Gordo, Black Hawk, Palo Alto, Jones and Jackson! Sales totaled $760,000 during the experiment, or about $127,000 a week. The pulltab tickets are about the size of an instant ticket but instead of scratching off a latex covering to discover the numbers or symbols underneath, players pull a perforated tab on the back to uncover the numbers and match them with the winning combination on the front. They sell for 50 cents each.

"Were pleased enough with the experiment, both in terms of dollar sales and minimum encroachment or cannibalization of our other games, to believe that pulltabs would be a very good income stream for the Death penalty, AIDS testing win teen lawmakers support Stanek turns down offer of top job at Lotto America Fetus found in sewage DES MOINES (AP) Des Moines police are trying to find the mother of a iz-month-old fetus that was found at the citys sewage treatment plant Monday. State Medical Examiner Thomas Bennett said he was unable to determine how the pregnancy had been termin-tated and that it was possible the baby died in the womb. "There are more tests to do, but we may not know much more than we know right now, he said. The fetus was found by Richard Townsend, a sewage plant worker who said the fetus may have been flushed down a toilet "1 dont know how it could have ended up in the sewer accidentally, he said. first drawing Feb.

13. Stanek said he was offered $66,000 to run Lotto America, about $9,000 more than his current But he said personal and family reasons caused him to decline. "At least for the time being I enjoy what Im doing very much, he said. "While I might enjoy the other position, I do know I enjoy this one. While he gave up a raise to remain as Iowa Lottery commissioner, Stanek said he is optimistic that lawmakers will consider raising his salary if the Iowa game continues to be successful.

Gazette Des Moines Bureau DES MOINES Iowa Lottery Commissioner Ed Stanek says he has turned down an offer to head the new multi-state 'game called "Lotto America. Stanek told the Iowa Lottery Board Tuesday that the game will now begin a national search to find someone to head the organization, which will be headquartered in Des Moines. Iowa is one of seven states cooperating in the joint venture. Stanek is vice president of the Lotto America board and is responsible for many of the organizational details for the game, which is scheduled to begin sales Feb. 3 and to hold its DES MOINES (AP) High school juniors and seniors gathering Tuesday as a mock legislature favored a return of the death penalty but sought limits on military recruiting on college campuses.

The recommendations came as the high school students wrapped up a three-day model legislative session sponsored jointly by the Iowa House of Representatives and the Iowa Department of Education. The students came from across the state, elected leaders, acted as lobbyists and reporters and capped the session with a series of votes. The students showed no reluctance to tackle emotional issues. On a 52-37 vote, they advocated a return of the death penalty state, favoring execution by lethal injection for first-degree murder cases. The measure called for a two-part trial, with a penalty phase coming after conviction.

The students also waded into a church-school debate, voting 51-39 to require schools to teach "scientific creationism alongside the theory of evolution. While they werent willing to ban military recruiting on campus, they voted 54-46 to require that recruiters file affidavits assuring that theyre presenting all the facts about a career in the military. Regarding AIDS, the students voted 65-24 to allow children who have acquired the disease to attend public schools. If the disease progresses to a stage where the child cant attend school, home instruction would be provided. They voted 79-19 to require that AIDS testing be made part of the marriage license application.

They voted 85-3 to require insurance companies cover in-home health care. By a 60-38 vote they decided that motorists over 70 should face periodic tests of their driving skills. "Gramm-Rudman forced us to start whittling away on the deficit. What weve been doing is borrowing from our children and our grandchildren. Weve got to stop.

We cant continue doing that indefinitely. To illustrate, Simon noted that interest on the national debt has risen some $120 billion a year since 1980. "If we want to see our money used properly for the kind of things that are important to us, weve got to cut back on that growth in he "warned. Spiraling interest costs are "squeezing out money that should be available for such programs as student aid and health care, he added. "The effect on Vinton, if we spend this kind of money, is to increase those deficits and keep interest rates up.

We shouldnt be spending money like that. "The nation must get its economic house in order, Simon observed during the hour-long meeting, billed as a town meeting to address rural economic concerns. Central to most of the problems confronting the nation, Simon suggested, is the condition of the economy. "We need to stem the steady growth of the deficit, he said, explaining thats why he supported passage of the Gramm-Rudman deficit reduction measure. Paul Simon reiterated his opposition this week to the Strategic Defense Initiative, or Star Wars, project recommended by the administration of Republican President Reagan. Speaking Monday to an overflow audience at the State Bank of Vinton, the candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination pointed out, "There are three ways to pay for it. "One is to cut back on such programs as Social Security and student loans. Another is to have a huge tax increase and the third is to have huge deficits and runaway inflation, said Simon.
