4a The Cedar Rapids Gazette: Oct 22. 1987 Big on Warmth, Light on Bulk. CONCERT REVIEW Despite singers raspy voice, U2 enriches crowd By Dee Ann Rexroat Gazette arts and entertainment writer IOWA CITY U2 broke many of the rules of rock-concert etiquette, creating a new kind of concert ritual at Tuesday nights sellout Carver-Hawkeye Arena show. The Dublin band has a fierce international following because of its music and lyrics, which issue an IOWA TODAY urgent cry for peace instead of rocks usual lusty escapades. Most rock concerts begin with a jolt sonically and visually.

U2s concerts are more thoughtful. Its members sauntered onto an unadorned stage for their first tune, "Where the Streets Have No Name, with sparce, black-and-white lighting. Lead singer Bono, a large hoop earring dangling from his left ear and his ponytail popping out from underneath his cowboy hat, danced Bono's comment, "Its a song I hope we may never have to sing again. The song is about war-torn Bono walked deliberately about the stage, almost as if in slow motion. This was a contrast to the usual charging and knitting of rock singers.

While Bono reached out to the crowd, struggling to get his message across, The Edge, U2s talented guitarist, was restrained. He crafted his solos and rhythms carefully. On "Bullet the Blue Sky his guitar solo was the musical incarnation of police sirens and distorted screams for mercy. Bono invited a student to join them on stage for Curtis Mayfields 1965 hit, "People Get Ready. The young man did a great job playing the three-chord progression on Bonos hollow-body guitar, smiling at his friends ir.

disbelief the whole while. Except for the final encore, the concert was unpredictable. Again, this is unusual for rock concerts that are nearly always pre-programmed and played song-for-song night after night The last encore, "40, broke another cardinal rule: going out with a bang. The song is based on Psalm 40 and is the Dublin bands usual concert-closer. Its members Bono, The Edge, bassist Adam Clayton, and drummer Larry Mullen left the stage one by one until only the audience is singing to itself.

The choir of 16,000 continued to sing until the lights slowly brightened and. signaled the end of the hour-and-a-half concert. U2s warm-up act the BoDeans, were an unpretentious bunch of Wisconsinites who can really rock. Its music crosses boundaries into country, punk, African and 50s rock roll. 1980 debut album, "Boy.

Bono talked to the audience after the second song, telling them it was the first night in several weeks he could use the arm he injured in a fall from the stage during a Washington, D.C., concert. He dedicated the next tune, "Trip Through Your Wire, to his arm. Perhaps he should have dedicated it to his voice, a bit raspy and hoarse from all the touring. It lacked its usual depth and range he whispered or let others sing the high notes. But that was the only disappointment of the evening.

There were several more dedications before the night was over. Bono dedicated a reflective cover version of the Beatles "Help! to Winnie Mandela, wife of jailed South African activist Nelson Mandela. He dedicated two songs to Martin Luther King, including a song about King "Pride (in the name of love) that was performed with further dedications to John Lennon, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Bob Marley and Steven Biko, among' others. The group played most of the tunes off its new album, "The Joshua Tree, including a stirring performance of "Bullet the Blue Sky. THE SECOND section of the concert started with a tape blaring Jimi Hendrix distorted guitar improvisation on "The Star Spangled Banner blending symbolically into "Bullet the Blue Sky, about Americas involvement in Central America.

Also symbolic were the red-and-blue spheres of light circling the stage, representing the bloodshed caused by fighter planes flying through the skies. Another political song, "Sunday Bloody Sunday, was prefaced by Group aids Amnesty International Blustery winter days call for style and substance. The style is easily seen. $85. 1 Everything In Our Store By Cindy Hadish Gazette news intern Tuesday night's U2 concert in Iowa City had more to offer its audience than just entertainment Several times during the evening, and particularly during the popular "Sunday Bloody Sunday, the group gave evidence of its human rights concerns. The members of U2 are active supporters of Amnesty International, a 25-year-old human rights organization, said Susan Berger, treasurer of Iowa Citys Amnesty International chapter. The rock group invited both the Cedar Rapids and Iowa City branches of AI to set up information booths at the concert "Its good for local groups when U2 lets them do this at concerts, said; Berger. "Besides recruiting members on the local or national 1 1 people hurt, IOWA CITY Eleven people sought treatment at the Carver-Hawkeye Arena first aid station Tuesday night during the U2 concert, according to Campus Security Chief Don Hogan.

Two unidentified concert-goers were taken by ambulance to University Hospitals, one with a knee injury and the other with an injury to her side when her chair collapsed. Two hundred chairs were broken by people standing on them during the concert "When you get a hot tune, everybodys got to swing, said Lt Ralph Moody of University Security in trying to explain how the chairs were damaged. The band contrasted "Streets, off its new album, with "I Will Follow, the first cut on its level, were trying to raise awareness that human rights abuses exist, and that there is an organization trying to stop them. Both Berger and Cedar Rapids AI coordinator Howard Hanson hoped to recruit new members at the concert, and Hanson reported tremendous response. He estimated the number of people signing up Tuesday night in the thousands, and he said he was running out of information brochures.

The Iowa City chapter has a current mailing list of about 200 and an active membership of 15 to 30, said Berger. Hanson gave similar numbers for Cedar Rapids. The two groups presently are waging a letter-writing campaign to try to gain the release of two "prisoners of conscience in the Soviet Union and Sri Lanka, said Berger. chairs damaged arena through one entrance before the concert caused $75 damage to one of the arenas doors. The injuries occurred when 2,000 to 3,000 fans rushed to the front of the stage at the start of the sold-out concert Some of those hurt were stepped on in the rush to the stage.

Hogan said Tuesday nights concert was unusual because fans rushed the stage at the very beginning of the concert rather than late in the concert which is typical. In addition, it "was probably a fuller house than we have had, Hogan said. "As far as the whole concert went, said Mooday, "it went fairly good for the size of concert we had 9 Attendance was estimated at 16,000.
