SATURDAY ALL DAY Smothers Brothers Crazy Combination Wit, Tomfoolery By ERSKIXE JOHNSON HOLLYWOOD The Smothers Brothers, foul-up Tom and long-suffering patient Dick, are the first to admit their invasion of television as CBS series stars has not been without problems. Not too serious, but sticky. Mostly it has been in the writing. As Dick says, "How can you write attitude? You can't." As Torn says, "We once agreed to do a television commercial and the agency man said, 'We want you to be The Smothers Brothers but we want you to do exactly what we tell We out. We can't work that way." This attitude which Tom and Smothers have turned into bis box office won them the sc- ries, but it's a problem.

Their act has even puzzled a fellow as shrewd as Jack Paar. When they were oo his old TV show Jack laughingly told them: "I don't know what you boys but it's a cinch nobody is going to steal it." Trying to describe their act is tough. Writing for them in a televi- TOM. LEFT. AND DICK SMOTHERS FOR Quality Processing by KODAK Bring Your Color Films to The Photo Shop 37 St.

Dick explains, "is thai for the first time in our life we arc saying things we didn't write." "We had too many writers at first." Tom adds. "Now the writers are just catching the essense of the way we work and we take it from there." There is a surprising clue now to the future of the Smothers Brothers on television. The director of the stanza we watched being filmed was Charles Bar, ton.

long associated with the comedy team of Bud and Lou Costello. The show's supervising'writer now is Alex Gottlieb, who wrote and produced the first four Abbott and Costello motion picture comedies. Can Tom and Dick turn out to be a modtrn hip version of the once popular Abbott and Costetlo team? We watched. As Dick was saymg: "I wanted to give her 0 candlelight dinner on the floor but she told me to co cet a geisha know a nice geisha replies Tom. "Her name is Betty-Betty Geisha." An Abbot and Costello routine? "Sure." said Director Barton, "but with Smother Brothers attitude.

Now She Gets Up at 6 Barbara Feldon, who costars with Don Adams in Get Smart, has been late riser until now. Now she gets up at 6 every morning to report to make-up and an early studio call. "I don't open my eyes until after I have been made up," she told TV Scout. "I don't want to see myself until then." It's Only Fair With all the actors around who have played policemen, it's only fair that a policeman turn actor. He is Ricliard X.

Lola Albright To Substitute In Peyton Place Lola Albright will substitute for Dorothy Malone as Constance Mackenzie on ABC-TV's dramatic serial "Peyton Place" while Miss Malone is recuperating from chest surgery it was announced today by Edgar J.

Scherick, vice president in charge of television programming, and Paul Monash, executive producer of "Peyton Place." "Peyton place" is seen on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday nights from 3.30 to 10 p.m. over Channels 9 and 13. "Everybody at ABC is delighted that Dorothy Malone is now off the critical Jisl and is making rapid strides toward total recovery," Scherick said. "In the meantime we are happy to have secured the services of an actress like Lola Albright to fill in the gap of the next five or six weeks," said. Starred in Peter Gunn Miss Albright was formerly on the ABC-TV Network when she Starred with Craig Stevens in "Peter Gunn." She has since appeared in over 100 television shows and in the motion picture "Cold Wind In August" for which she received tremendous critical acclaim, as well as "Kid Galla- had" with Elvis Presley and in the yet to be released "Lord Love A Duck." Stepping into the role of Constance Mackenzie is one of the biggest challenges of my theatrical career," Lola Albright said.

"It is my earnest hope that the audiences will accept me as Constance Mackenzie who, as ployed by Dorothy Malone, has become almost a household word." "I hope too that Dorothy will be pleased with my performance. She has my every wish for her speedy recovery, along -vith the wishes of her legion of tans who wish for her return to che serifs as soon as possible."
