Lebanon Daily News, Wednesday, January 22,1975 2 Mishaps Occur At Same Spot Two accidents occurred yesterday afternoon within about five minutes at Route 322 and 419, westofQuentin. A Hershey man escaped injury when the tractor-trailer he was driving was demolished as it flipped onto its roof at the intersection. Barry R. Smith, 32, 607 W. Chocolate was identified by state police as the driver.

His tractor-trailer was considered demolished with $36,800 damage. One report said Smith was trapped in the tractor. According to Trooper Joseph Yozwiak, Smith's truck, eastbound on Route 322, went out of control when the load of railroad ties in the trailer shited as he turned onto Route 419. The vehicle first flipped onto its right side, then onto its roof, on which it skidded 40 feet. It came to a rest totally upside down.

The Quentin Fire Co. was dispatched for a stand-by for two and a half hours as the vehicle was righted and prepared for towing. Chief Earl Dundore said 10 men responded to the call. At the same location, a total of $300 damage was reported to cars driven by Fred C. Lowery, 50, New Holland, and Suzanne May Heisey, 27, Jonestown RD 2.

(Daily News Photo) FPC Rule Prevents Layoffs PITTSBURGH Steel Corp. will not proceed with planned layoffs at five area plants because of an amended Federal Power Commission order providing a partial restoration of the firm's natural gas requirements, the steelmaker said Tuesday. A spokesman for the nation's No. 1 steelmaker said the FPC action "will permit the company to heat treat and process alloy and specialty steel pro- ducts which are important to the energy and defense related industries." Last week the FPC, which monitors natural gas supplies and distribution, ordered Carnegie Gas a U.

S. Steel subsidiary, to cut the gas supply to the National. Duquesne, Irvin and Homestead Works and the Wheel and Axle plant at McKees Rocks. An FPC spokesman said apparently there was a misun- derstanding between the commission and U. S.

Steel. "The Carnegie Natural Gas Co. is entitled to receive 59 million cubic feet daily rather than the 49 million cubic feet the company apparently thought was the case under the language of the original order," the FPC spokesman said. U. S.

Steel, when the first cutback announcement was made, said the reduction would mean the furlough of about 1,300 steelworkers at the five plants and reduce production by about 90,000 tons per month. The steel firm had petitioned the U. S. Supreme Court to reverse the FPC order, but the high court refused to intervene. More Turkey Eaten CHICAGO Ageneration ago the average American ate only four pounds of turkey annually, most of it in the last two months of the year.

Now we eat turkey the nearly 10 pounds apiece. Big DuSt ClOUd Colors Sunsets Spectacular, multi-colored sunsets and, in many areas, a prolongation of twilight, are being caused by the northward spread of a vast dust cloud thrown into the stratosphere by a volcanic eruption in Guatemala last October. The northward advance of the cloud, which is expected to affect sunsets for as much as a year or more, has been traced by U-2 planes and other highflying aircraft; by visual observations from the ground, and by a laser-probing system called Lidar. Three Miles Thick The dust layer has reached what may be its maximum density over much of the United States in recent days. The layer is about three miles thick with its median most concentrated region miles aloft.

As with debris thrown aloft by the 1963 eruption of Agung in Bali, the dust is expected to provide dramatic views at evening and morning twilight. The display tends to be brightest 25-30 minutes after sunset. At that stage, sunlight. reddened by its passage through the atmosphere several hundred miles to the west, illuminates the dust layer, although landscape near the observer and lower cloud levels are dark. The result, as the sun sinks lower beneath the horizon, can be a succession of brilliant colors, including purple, ochre, yellow, orange and red.

Under ideal conditions, the western sky brightens noticeably as the effect reaches its maximum. These effects have been observed from such widely separated sites as Hawaii, Wyoming, Massachusetts. France. England and New York. Police Agree To Demands LONDON.

Orit. (UPI) Police agreed today to provide ransom money and a getaway car for a gunman in exchange for four young hostages being held in a farmhouse. The unidentified gunman, whose three accomplices in a grocery store robbery were arrested Tuesday, had demanded safe passage from the house and $10,000. A police official said officers collected an undisclosed amount of ransom money before dawn and began negotiating an escape route with the gunman. One officer described the man as "very erratic." A police spokesman said the children, age 4 to 12, were believed safe.

A constable who entered the house Tuesday was cut by flying glass when the gunman forced him to flee. The incident began when four men, armed with rifles and handguns and wearing stocking masks held up the grocery store and escaped in a stolen car. Thefts One defendant was sentenced and another was arraigned during an abbreviated session of sentencing and arraignment court conducted Tuesday by Judge G.Thomas Gates. Roger Miller. 612 N.
