Brooks said she was recruited for the government-appointed director position over two years ago when the Reagan administration was under fire amid charges of discrimination against women and minorities.

Her appointment will end in August, she said, because the Reagan administration is "weeding out all the Peace Corps' administration. Although the Peace Corps is a non-political organization, Michael McGirr, public affairs specialist for the Kansas City office, said some top positions are subject to political appointments. work with other private volunteer organizatibns to integrate skills needed to implement the programs. Ethiopia, one of the nations hardest hit by the drought, is not among the countries slated for assistance, Brooks said, because the Peace Corps will enter a country only at the request of its national leaders. "We will go into Ethiopia if the government asks us to," she said.

BROOKS, WHO formerly worked as director of the Peace Corps in The Gambia, a country on the west coast of Africa, said the famine is severe in 14 countries. Food production in The Gambia is 50 percent of volunteers, and Scanlon attributed that to education. "The education is such a priority in Iowa, and people, are looking outward." THE RELIEF plan is intended to help up to 12 African nations reverse declining food production and attain self-sustaining food sys-terns.

It will be initiated in 1986 in the nations of Mali, Zaire, Niger and Lesotho, and following an evaluation in four additional countries in 1988.
