Paga 14 THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 17, 1959 RECORD-EAGIE, TRAVERSE CITY, MICHIGAN Gladiators Host Ludington Orioles Here Saturday MINNESOTA Outdoors with Gordie Flint Central-Midland Rated Top 'A' Contest Gordon Charles A Meetings of the conservation commission are a a a depeud- able source outdoor nev-s stories and the September one which we attended was no exception. This a i a session, held at the Higgins Lake a i i school, was the a a meeting i i fisheries regulations the coming year arc decided by the commissioners. It was expected that the I i i 11 of I i or ad- ding new "flies- i only" a would call for fireworks from the general public a is always welcome to attend these meetings, but such was not the case. Oh. there were some comments both for a a i special fly fishing waters, but this centered mostly on the AuSable river system and arguments were about equally i i but not a i a i for either group.

Upshot of the whole thing was the commission renewed most of the flies-only waters, i i the Pere Marquette and Boardman. in spite of recommendations from the Institute for Fisheries Research that these a waters be dropped. The bis news, as far as we were concerned, came out durins presentation of special charts by the I i In a i comparisons between the effectiveness of flies- only wafers and open, a i i i it a a lii per cent of tbe trout in a stream wnre a by cither method. An i i of the way i are about to head now came the fisheries budget which provided no increase in for a i of hatchery-reared trout, but did give the stream improvement section and the research section each a $20.000 a a i in funds. Dr. i Leonard, in speaking of possible sources of trout loss in a stream mentioned mergansers as a possible significant factor and pointed out that these fish ducks concentrate on trout streams when the big lakes freeze up. Another possibility of trout loss might be large pike like the ones taken by shocker from the AuSable river i spring and planted in a Traverse county's I i a lake. Far above these other two, however, will be stream improvement structures or lack of them in providing shelter for trout or leaving trout vulnerable to natural enemies.

North Central Team Will Be Stiff Foe The Gladiators of St.

Francis high school will open a slim but attractive football season on the local turf Saturday evening when they host an always tough Ludington Oriole squad at o'clock. The local team will be seeking their second win in the past thrne seasons and at this early date, the game shapes up as a toss-up. The local school will play only five games this year but three of them will be against North Central The Glads will play at Cadillac next week and against Manistee in the final game of the season. In between, they meet Scottville and Petoskey St. Francis.

Coaches Dale Wares and Jack Densley are completing three weeks of intensive with i smallest squad in recent years. "We realize, a a five same slate isn't especially attractive to boys when yon consider the time they have to spend in practice sessions. Bi.t we know that, the boys who did come out. really want to play football. We think this fire will carry us a long way if we don't run into a streak of injuries.

We're awfully thin and just can't stand this kind of bad luck." they said at the start of the season. The local school will probably dress two complete teams for the game but most of the players will have to go it both ways, on defense as well as on offense and players in the backfield will all have to know the plays and assignments for the other positions. As matters stand right now. St. Francis will have a strong, well tested line with experiencr.

Halfbacks John Brnithaupt and Terry Riley were standouts with the SF i var- I sity a year ago and are ready for I varsity play.

Brcithaupt. only a soph, weighs 175 and is a fine runner and passer. Riley. also a sophomore, weighs only 145 but is shifty and aggressive. Jerry Stefaniak, a junior, at fullback may need a couple games to grt accustomed to varsity play but both coaches are certain he can cut the buck.

Backing up these players are Bob Taylor and Bob Mikowski. both seniors with limited experience. The Orioles are not rated strong by North Central standards but feel they can improve their record of last year in which they were winlcss. As a team, they are looking to the future. The Glads can expect an aggressive team, as always, one that feels a win in the opening game would auger well in contests.
