Associated Press RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif. -Quarterback Dan Fouts, whose 43,040 passing yards ranks second in NFL history, let his battered body convince his mind it was time to retire after 15 years with the San Diego Chargers. I think I had to be honest with myself and I came to the realization that physically, I just dont-think I can play the caliber I would like to, Fouts said during a news conference Thursday.

You just cant realize how big and strong and fast these guys are and how slow and puny and weak I am and what a mismatch it is. Fouts, 36, who directed San Diegos record-setting offense of the late 1970s and early 1980s, chose to make his retirement announcement at his home in Rancho Santa Fe estate, about 20 miles north of San Diego. He said he wasnt pressured by the team into leaving, calling his decision one reached mutually with club officials. Im very happy with the decision, and looking forward to moving on, said Fouts, who cited sportscasting and commercial real estate among his interests for the future. Fouts came to the Chargers in 1973 as a third-round draft choice out of the University of Oregon.

He assumed the starting role in his rookie season, replacing his boyhood idol, Johnny Unitas. Fourteen years later, Fouts moved past Unitas on the career yardage list. He retires only some 4,000 yard shy of the record, Fran Tarkentons 47,003, despite throwing 863 fewer passes. Among Fouts NFL records is his total of 51 300-yard passing games, and he ranks fourth all-time with 254 touchdowns. Fouts emergence coincided with the arrival in 1978 of Don Coryell, who coached the Chargers through the quarterbacks best years.

Coryell resigned midway through the 1986 season and has retired from football. Tutored by then-assistant coach Bill Walsh and given the freedom to operate a wide-open offense, Fouts led the league in passing a league-record four straight years beginning in 1979. We were so good. We were so explosive. We had so much confidence in what we were doing and we had a lot of fun, Fouts said.

He was willing to stand in the pocket until the last split-second, risking the hits of rushing lineman to allow his receivers the time needed to get open. The many hits he took began to take a toll eventually. Back and shoulder problems, torn knee ligaments and several concussions were among the injuries that sidelined him for 18 games over the past five seasons. The Chargers have been actively trying to trade for an experienced replacement for Fouts because backup Mark Herrmann has been effective only in relief and third-stringer Mark Vlasic, rookie last year, lacks seasoning. We told our kids Kemp is what gets them going, and we went out to stop him. We played a 2-3 zone.

We basically had two men around him wherever he went to keep him bottled up. But Kemps offense isnt the critical factor. He intimidates many shots with his presence in the middle. Everybody worries about his offense, but on defense is where he beats you, Neely said. We used ball bats in practice to get our kid used to his long arms being up there, but we still shot only 37 percent.

He makes you think about it. Concord coach Jim Hahn credits Kemp for the Minutemens incredible defensive statistics. Opponents are shooting only 38 percent for the season. No one has shot better than 50 percent. He gives the other kids a chance to be adventurous and take chances, Bilger said.

They know Shawns back there to reject it. He blocked five shots in the first half against us, and our kids were looking for him instead of looking at the basket. Hes quick and anticipates well, Sorrell said. He almost owns the lane. Its not the blocked shots, but the way he forces rushed shots and changed shots.

The other kids force their man down a tunnel to Shawn, Neely said. That strategy has backfired in the past, when Kemp would become too aggressive and get into foul trouble. As a senior, hes learned to avoid the silly mistakes. Hes fouled out of only two games this season. Hes playing smarter than in the past, Neely said.

Hes not trying to block so many shots, and if you jump into him, hell take the charge. Hes on a tear right now. Anything that comes off the board hes going to get. Theres no chance if you let him get rolling. Bad news for Chris Evert Steffi Grafs famous forehand, missing during most of the International Players Championships, has returned just in time for their match in Saturdays finals. The top-seeded Graf found her favorite stroke in Thursdays 6-3, 6-1 victory over Stephanie Rehe. No. 2 Evert beat 16-year-old Mary Joe Fernandez 6-2, 6-1 in the other semifinals match.

Grafs forehand was good for 19 winners against the unseeded Rehe, an 18-year-old from Highland, Calif. I was taking more of a risk with it, the West German said. Thats? ay should iisedt I should go into it, and then the opponent cant do anything about it. Grafs forehand is one reason shes beaten Evert five straight times, including 6-1, 6-2 in the title match at Key Biscayne last year. Im certainly not psyched out against her, Evert said.

I just want to play well and obviously not give her any soft forehands, try to hit the ball deep and move well. While Grafs forehand has made a comeback, the West German said the 33-year-old Everts whole game is rejuvenated. She really seems to be very much into playing again now, Graf said. That may be the strongest part of her game. MB3SEBABI Exhibition Baseball AMERICAN LEAGUE Heltonville from page B1 more games before we take off.
