IOC The Cedar Rap3s Gazette: Nov. 24. 1 963 lowans keep alive memories of Pilgrim forefathers By Sherri Wilcox Ora UnaarMy I myna MuOent ItanuM by tan pnnr Aaan DES MOINES Seldom remembered at Thanksgiving are those who made it possible. The pilgrims names dont top the list of our country's patriots. However.

George Washington would never have become known as Father of our Country if John Alden, William Bradford and 21 other Englishmen hadn't sailed on the Mayflower in 1620. The pilgrims did more than make peace with Indians and survive a voyage on the Mayflower, which was nothing like a "Love Boat" cruise. To this day those who first arrived at Plymouth. are individually remembered by their descendants. The Society of Mayflower Descendants in the State of Iowa is open to anyone who can prove his or her relationship to one of the 23 passengers who signed the Mayflower Compact Maurine Coe.

current governor of Iowa's Mayflower descendant society and a secretary at the division of historical museum and archives in the Iowa State Historical Department said to be a member one must have recorded proof of each generation back to 1620. "The object of the organization is to perpetuate to a remote posterity the memory of our Pilgrim fathers." Coe said. IOWAS soarrr is made up of 368 members, many of whom dont live in Iowa. While other states have similar organizations, Coe said sometimes persons join the Iowa society and then move out of state. Coe added that Mayflower descendants arent necessarily more abundant on the East Coast Massachusetts has the most members, 2,006.

Coe attributed that to the residents being more "conscious" of the Mayflower. Iowas membership is higher than other New England states though. Many of the descendants la lews are in John Alden's lineage. Alden to the last survivor of the Mayflower and. according to legend, the first passenger to get off the ship when it landed.

Coe tells of her descendant. John Howland. "He was one of fits children traveling without parents," Coe said. "He fell overboard and had to be rescued," she added. A few members in Iowa vare descendants of more than one Mayflower passenger.

Coe said this is uncommon considering the odds pi Mayflower descendants marrying each other generations after their ancestors traveled together. One Iswan has eight descendants. Erma Owing of Marshalltown is one of the 23 charter members of The Society of Mayflower Descendants in the State of Iowa, formed in 1328. Owing! said her mother, boro la 1864 as a member of the Winslqj family, is a descendant of Edward Winslow, once governor of Plym-. outh.

"Wa still have the same motives." Owing! said, comparing the present organization to the original. Owingsf mother helped assemble the Mayflower descendants in Iowa to form the group. "We always knew we were descendants," aha said. TWO MEETINGS art held an nually. on the Saturday closest to May 1 and the other on the Saturday closest to Thanksgiving.

Annual dues are $7.50. There is also a junior society. Both Coe and Viarilyn Schin ihrmrian and office manager of the Schmitt said official record usually can be obtained only five generations back. However, proof through Uoeage books. Bible records and newspapers can be used beyond that time.

Glitters gone from Ottumwas Video Game Capital of World By Cynthia Benjamin A Mooned Press Three different times I had to live off the cola machine. That means, I Twin Galaxies, but not necessarily Ottumwa. They feel its too small in a town." One of the major reasons Day chose this south-central Iowa city for the International Scoreboard was because of its small sizeNHe felt the small, wholesome Midwest city would help combat some of the stigma attached to video game playing. DAY SAID THAT with all the "time and effort hes spending promoting the video game industry, he thinks the manufacturers could at least loan or supply him with games for the arcade. Free use of machines would cut his overhead expenses by 50 percent and ensure Ottumwas video game future, he claimed.

But Day admits that manufacturers are not likely to help him while they are facing their own financial strug-gles. "The whole industry is hurting now, but no ones in trouble. They're just not making enough dough to go on the offense now. They may feel the investment in Ottumwa would be completely down the hole. From their point of view, they cant afford to make mistakes at this point, he said.

see someone buy a 50-cent can of Coke and I go over and take the money out of the machine and it becomes spending money for the day. Thats because every last cent I have went into making this thing survive," the 34-year-old bachelor said. Day attracted national attention on March 19 when Gov. Terry Branstad, Mayor Jerry Parker and officials of the Amusement Game Manufacturers Association and Atari Inc. gathered in this city of 27,000 to proclaim it the "Video Game Capital of the World.

THE ABC television network has featured Twin Galaxies several times on "Thats Incredible, and industry magazines rely on the scoreboard for authentic game records. But Day is blaming the video game industry for many of his current financial problems. "We havent gotten complete support from the video games manufacturers ever since the initial fanfare ended. Its rumored that they don't think Ottumwa is the right place for the video game capital. Theyve indicated informally to other people that they are intensely interested in OTTUMWA Troubled times in the video game industry have forced Walter Day to sleep qn the floor and live oft quarters from a cola machine.

But hes still reluctant to pull the plug on the "Video Game Capital of the World- Day, the man primarily responsible for state and video game officials naming this Corn Belt city the "Video Game Capita of the World. said income in his Twin Galaxies Arcade has dropped by 80 percent in the last 20 months. Twin Galaxies is the home of video games' International Scoreboard, which keeps tabs on the best scores on some 225 video games for national competitions and for the Guinness Book of World Records. "IT ISNT that the popularity of video games is dropping, because theyre still outrageously popular, but rather an indication of their availability everywhere, Day said about his arcade's sagging profits. He said that business got so bad at times during the past year that he was forced to sleep on the floor in the back of the arcade to save money.

Walter Day has found it tough going since interest in video games has leveled off. Day was responsible for having Ottumwa declared "Video Game Capital of the World, but of late things havent been so rosy at his Twin Galaxies arcade. Wilton will buy breath analyzer to combat drinking by students WILTON Another Eastern Iowa school district Wilton Community has purchased a breath analyzer to fight student drinking. The district, which straddles the Cedar-Muscatine county line, has no more of a drinking problem than any other district, said Superintendent Dean Weaver, but "the problem we run into is that when we have talked to someone (we suspect of drinking), theyve said, 'You prove that we have (been drinking). Weaver said an incident several weeks ago in which a vocal music teacher suspected some students at an evening practice of drinking brought the issue to a head.

"She felt she needed something to help her out, Weaver said. The $400 machine would have been used in two to three cases "at the most in the past year, he said. It wont solve the problem, Weaver said. but it helps by "taking the answer out of (the students) hands and the school personnels hands. Were going to rely upon an instrument." Weaver also noted that three school districts already using an analyzer Oelwein, New Hampton and Cardinal High School in Eldon "felt it was working as a deterrent." Administrative rules for the breath analyzers use will be discussed by the school board at its Dec.

12 meeting. Students found to be drinking or under the influence in school are usually suspended for a few days, Weaver said. Those in extracurricular activities are suspended from those activities for four weeks. Wilton Community has 275 students in grades nine through 12. The board, instead, will discuss buying a snow blade for clearing snow. Two improvement projects track lighting and retrofitting the elementary school furnace are finished, and the junior-senior high school roof repairs will be finished this week, the board was told.

LA PORTE CITY One sale and one purchase were delayed Monday by the La Porte City school board. A propane tank and vaporizer at the elementary school, made obsolete by the districts "firm gas supplies, wont be sold until the items are re-advertised, the board decided. An earlier ad failed to attract a response. The board decided against buying a snow blower to clear the playground area and parking lot since it would leave a two-inch layer of snow SPECIALS ON ACCESSORIES Gortex Sid Glows Reg. 45.00 SALE 2995 Leather Ski Glows Reg.
