The closest the As came to a hit before the ninth was in the third when Bert Campaner-is, whose hitting streak was snapped at 17 games, lined a shot through the box. Pattin got his glove up to slow the ball down and shortstop Beniquez was able to throw out Campaneris on a close play. Bando wasnt hurt seriously.

He seemed to freeze on an inside pitch and it glanced off his batting helmet by the ear region. Sal was shaken up but he walked off under his own pow- States even know the rules out an astonishingly large percentage has begun following the game the past few weeks. Only because of Bobby Fischer. Heres a pale, studious, almost timid-looking 29-year -old one-time Boy Wonder who makes guys like Joe Namath and Dick Allen look like a couple of amateurs when it comes to doing his own thing, his own way and in his own good time. The opening match in Reykjavik Tuesday was a perfect example.

Word had filtered down that Fischer was go, go, go for that first match with Boris Spassky, Russias world champion. All the embroidery had been By MILTON RICHMAN NEW YORK (UPI) Do you play chess? No, said Wes Parker, first baseman for the Los Angeles Dodgers and owner of one of baseballs more active minds, but Im interested in the game. You mean the world championship going on in Iceland now? Yes, Im following it. Because of this guy Fischer? Hes the main reason, I suppose. How do you feel about him, do you like him or not? I like him.

Wes Parker mulled it over awhile. I like him because he has Tuesdays Results Detroit 6 Texas 5- Chicago 4 Cleveland 3 Balt 2 Kan City 1, 10 inns Milw 5 Minnesota 4 Boston 4 Oakland 0 New York 7 California 3 Todays Probable Pitchers (All Times EDT) Boston (Curtis 3-2) at Oak- Tuesdays Results Houston 6 Chicago 5, 1st Chicago 9 Houston 5, 2nd Mont 6 San DiegoVJ? inns San Francisco 6 New York 1 Phila 4 Los Angeles 1 Cinci 5 Pittsburgh 0 Atla 5 St. Louis 4, 15 inns Todays Probable Pitchers (All Times EDT) San Francisco (McDowell 8-6) By JOE SARGIS OAKLAND, Calif. (UPI) -Marty Pattin has to be some kind of a guy. Here he is with a no-hitter within reach and hes thinking about something that happened back in the second inning.

Pattin, the journeyman righthander the Boston Red Sox got from the Milwaukee Brewers last winter in a 10-player deal, hit Sal Bando with a pitch Tuesday night en route to a one- hit, 4-0 victory over the Oakland As and it so unnerved him that he couldnt think about anything else. Yet, Pattin took his no-hit bid into the ninth, only to see Reggie Jackson spoil it after one out with a solid single to right-center. After Pattin nailed Bill Voss on a foul popup to catcher Carlton Fisk for the final out, he walked off the mound to be greeted by his teammates, most of whom felt sorry for him, but the first thing he asked was How is Sal? If you are looking for the all America boy in the big leagues, you could come close if you picked Pattin. Hes average in size 5 foot-11 and 180 pounds he married his high school sweetheart, went to college in his home town where he earned a masters degree in industrial arts, and he never has given a single baseball manager one moment of concern. When they told Pattin that Bando, another nice guy, wasnt hurt as a result of his beaning, Marty said, Im glad hes okay.

I was really worried about him. Pattin, who broke into the majors with the California Angels in 1968, never has pitched a no-hitter in his professional career, although he had three of them with his high school team in Charleston, 111. Naturally, a big league no-hitter remains his goal. Its my biggest dream, said the 29-year -old Pattin. I guess this is as close as Ill ever come.

As for the pitch that Jackson lined for the only Oakland hit, Pattin said it was a fastball that he got up a little higher than he wanted. Still, he wasnt all that upset about things. Winning the game is the big thing, he said, although a nohitter would have been nice. Pattin who won 14 games in each of the last two seasons for the lowly Brewers, hasnt exactly been a ball of fire with the Red Sox this year. In fact as recently as June 20 his record stood at 2-8.

But since then he has won four consecutive decisions and said that has done a lot for his confidence. It has also helped make contenders in the American League East of the Red Sox, who now have won nine of their last 11 games and stand Qnly four games off the lead. Fisk drove in two of BostonS runs with his 11th homer and a single. A fielders choice grounder by Danny Cater fetched across the third run and the fourth scored on a triple by Juan Beniquez and a wild pitch by reliever Darold Knowles. Four As reached on Pattin before Jacksons hit three on walks and Bando when he was er.

Jackson, who gets keyed up when big things are happening, confirmed the pitch he hit was a fastball. It came with the count 2-2 and Reggie seemed more upset at ruining the nohitter than Pattin.

He didnt want to talk much about it, but the look on his face as he walked off the field told the whole story. In his own way, Jackson is an all America type, too. Bennington has eaten up all Southern Vermont competition in reaching its lofty 8-0 SVL record. The Post 13 has been averaging double figures in games against other southern opposition. Brattleboro will take a 5-4 record into this first of three straight Wednesday evening games with Bennington. The Post 5 team has won four straight in moving its record to 5-4 but Coach Ed LaFlamme will be the first to admit the current win streak hasnt been against the top of competition expected tonight at Bennington. Fischer had kicked about. Spassky was all set. Everyone in the Reykjavik Chess Hall was holding his breath as the Russian, playing the white pieces, made the first move, opening with the Queen pawn. Game Officially On The world championship officially was on. But something was missing.

Fischer. He wasnt there. What was the rush? He had an hour before he had to make the first move. Fischer didnt set out to keep Spassky waiting. He didnt do it purposely.

The official clock was ticking but he didnt care. Bobby Fischer ALWAYS is late. He has been late for more important things than a chess match. Even a world championship one. And bet on it, hell be late again.

Thats the way he is. Finally, eight minutes, during which time Spassky got up impatiently and walked around, Fischer appeared. He shook hands with Spassky and then sat down in his special swivel chair which he had flown in from New York for these championships. Fischer studied the board two minutes, then made his first move, knight to King bishop three. In his own mind, Fischer feels hes one little guy taking on the whole Russian govern- ment.

He doesnt feel this way because of any politics, the usual politics between countries, that is, but because of chess politics. Always Plays) Win Regardless, he always played to win. Tuesdays first game was adjourned, meaning each man had made his allotted 40 moves jp the five-hour time limit with ho decision being reached. When the game is resumed today, Spassky will have the upper hand although Fischer can stilLgetra-draw. In this first of 24 games, Spassky played the way everybody thought he would conservatively.

That figured because if this whole business winds up even, say 12-12, Spassky goes back home to Russia the same way he came to Reykjavik world champion. Fischer has the first move in Thursdays second game, though. Watch him go Hell play a completely different game. You can bet on that, too. Wes Parker doesnt have to be a chess expert.

Two Brattleboro golfers, Bob Ratti and Hugh Barber, fired a 78 and 80, respectively. Former state champion Ratti was four over par with a 42 on the front nine but came back with a one-over 36 over the back nine.

Barber said he played well but played a couple holes stupidly and bang, three double bogies. Wilkinson holds a five-stroke lead over second-place finisher w. Boupion yesterday, Ron Coleman of St. Albans. Two golfers, Freeman Allen of Middlebury and John Donnelly of Kwiniaska were tied for third with 75s while Jim Collins of Mt.nthony had a 76 in B.Pattenon front of four golfers bunched with 77s.

By MARTIN LADER Marty Pattin threw only two bad pitches all night. The first cost him peace of mind and the second cost him a lifetime dream. In the second inning of Tuesday nights game at Oakland, Pattin hit As third baseman Sal Banjto with a pitch that just got away.

With one out in the ninth inning, he threw a fastball that I got up a little too high and Reggie Jackson jumped on it for a single. It was the only hit of the game off the Boston righthander as the Red Sox whipped Oakland, 4-0. When it was over, Pattin was mote concerned about Bando I than about his lost glory. Im I just glad that Sals okay, said the 29-year-old journeyman pitcher. I was worried and shook up for a while.

One of my biggest dreams has been to pitch a no-hitter in the big leagues, admitted Pattin, who walked three batters and struck out seven. I guess this is the closest I will ever come.
