4 THE CEDAR RAPIDS GAZETTE: Suu Oct M. 190 Penicillin: Miracle Drug of World War II 1 to make an estimate of the ap-proximate age of each appliance. The officials of the local gas company wish to make clear that answering these questions puts you under no obligaUon whatsoever. It is, in fact, a patriotic duty that will make a worthwhile contribution to postwar planning. This information will be compiled and tabulated to determine what new equipment should be put into production first when it is possible to resume manufacturing operations.

It also will enable those in charge of servicing gas appliances to have adequate parts and facilities available for use in keeping present equipment giving satisfactory service. Help speed the delivery of new gas appliances after the war and make sure that present gas appliances can be serviced properly for the duration. Call the Iowa-Illinois Gas and Electric company tomorrow. It takes only a minute to answer the questions in the survey, and your cooperation will be sincerely appreciated. The gas companys Cedar Rapids phone number is 5101; in Marion the number is 263.

William Baldridge Develops, Finishes Films of Amateurs Amateur photographers who want the best finishing and developing cant go wrong when they take their work to William Baldridge, commercial photographer, 218 Third street SE. Experienced workers do the developing and printing, so the photographer can be sure his films get square shake. Thermostatically-controlled developing tanks make sure that the temperature is always correct. Mr. Baldridge haa some miscellaneous camera accessories in stock, although fine cameras are off the market for the duration.

He also gets a limited amount of film each month for sale to the public. Not much, hut some. The allotment is based pn sale before rationing became necessary. William Baldridge also does complete line of commercial photography pictures for railroads, insurance companies, advertising shots, group pictures for use in trade publications and house or fans. Portraits also are part of the Baldridge studio repertoire, and you will want to make sure your soldier fiance or husband visits Baldridges on his next furlough or leave.

And when he returns, see that he takes the right picture with him his mother and father, his fiancee or his wife. workers lunchbox will taste better end keep longer if made with butter. Butter keeps the bread and filling from drying out, makes them taste as fresh at noon as when the sandwich was made. To the limits of your ration points, use butter in cooking. It makes vegetables taste better and adds to their nutrition value.

You'll notice the difference in vegetables prepared with butter by the manner in which children call for second helpings instead of making a face at the first. Every step in the process of preparing dairy products st the Cedar Rapids Cooperative Dairy company is handled by the. most modern equipment and under the most sanitary conditions possible. Just as sanitation and modem equipment, plus the known value of the Co-Op label, mean something to the housewife, so do they mean a great deal to the farmer. The Cedar Rapids Cooperative Dairy company today, as when it was organized in 1925, is owned and Aperated by farmers.

Thus the Co-Op label means the fanner has the market any producer must have to exist. That farmers are satisfied with their end of the bargain is shown by the fact that out of 700 who take advantage of the Co-Op services, 450 have been doing business wnth the concern since it was organized in 1925. Dairy products are perfect sources for vitamin prerequisite to tough flesh and bone. America's national health would be better if Americans consumed more dairy products. For example, the United States per capita consumption of butter is 17.5 pounds yea'rly.

This is about the same as that of the United Kingdom, but it is 10 pounds less than the Canadian consumption. President of the Cedar Rapids Cooperative Dairy company is R. L. Dick" Stallman of near Fairfax, himself an operating farmer Other officers are Dell Van Note, president; R. N.

Even if it were wholly valid, the vast destruction of property 1 and life inevitable in modem war would more than outweigh any benefits realized through a speedup of scientific research. What war does do is throw the spotlight on medical and pharmaceutical development.

If the mortality rate of American wounded in this war i but a fraction of what It wa In 1817 and 1918, that is not entirely the result of frantic medical scurrying since Pearl Harbor. Tears of Research. Rather, all the medical miracles of World war II entailed years of research in the peacetime da when such research went relatively unnoticed. The professional pharmacist will tell you that these medical miracles of World war II are three in number: 1. Blood plasma.

1 X. The sulfonamides. 2. Penicillin. Of these the newest and doubtless the most revolutionary is penicillin, a powerful antibacterial agent which, in lay language, conquers germs by Interfering with their eating and digestion.

Germs Crippled." The new era" in medicine, involving the crippling of germs, rather than killing them outright, came Into being with the sulfa drugs, but greater advances were made witii newer and moie successful penicillin. The'new Remedies dont kill the germs as a rule, but weaken them bv interfering with the germs metabolism, leaving the bodys natural defenses to kill the bacilli and make the cure Vastly more potent that the sulfas anrl hundred times more active, penicillin has shown not a single repoited bad human reaction. Made by Common Molds. Fenicillin is a chemical nianu-factuied by. the common green molds of bread and cheese.

To make it, pharmaceutical houses ic-e huge stacks of fat-bellied glass bottles, with a capacity of about a gallon each. Each bottle 1 about half filled with a clean, watery liquid. A bit of the mold is inoculated into this liquid, and the top of the bottle is scaled. The! bottles, lying on their' then; are stacked in tieis. theiejto remain about two wreks In that period, a velvety-blue-green-whita film, the mold penl-rilliurti noUtum.

forms over the surface of tneliquid. There isnt any penicillin in this mold The precious drug is in the liquid. And there isnt much of it per bottle. After two weeks, the mold is skimmed off, the liquid poured out. and from It is extracted the penicillin.

1 The development of penicillin is an example of cooperation, between government agencies engaged In scientific- work for the war effort. -certain pharmaceutical firms which offered their services to meet, the emergency problem of adequate production, and a group of medical scientists. These scientists participated In the collection and correlation of clinical studies which had to be undertaken rapidly, effectively and with i 'minimum amount of material. Discovered In 1921. Penicillin wa diicovered in 1929 when an observer In a London hospital noted by chance that on a Petri dish showing dense numbers of taphlocoeci, the micro-organisms i failed to multiply in one small area.

THE RESPONSIBILITIES above it the Paramount Pharmacy, and drug. todies en the subject' were somewhat desultory, and the practical significance of Flemings observations was not fully realised until 1938.

At that' time Dubor, of the Rockefeller Institute, announced the discovery of gramicidin, a similar antibiotic substance obtained from cultures of a soil bacillus. Stimulated by this American work, researchers at the University of Oxford undertook the study of penicillin, and in late 1940 they published the preliminary results of clinicaj and laboratory m-v estigations. Important In War Effort. It was quickly recognized that If the claims made for penicillin could be substantiated, it would be of prime importance not only to civilian medicine but to the war effort. In the summer of 1942 the committee on medical research undertook to organise a concerted attack on the problem.

As a le-sult of a sene of conferences, two manufacturers agreed, to go into the penicillin business on a large scale, agreeing to share scientific information. At I that time the practical value of penicillin had not been proved, the possibility of pro- ductlon on a practical scale was' problematical, and the financial risk Involved was considerable. Meanwhile the committee on medical research set up a clinical testing agency to obtain a reliable appraisal of penicillin's therapeu-tic value. It is probable that no new drug ever has been studied moie promptly, and with more accurate and intelligent technique. Here Are the Conclusions.

Today penicillin has been administered to enough patients, including soldiers home from the front with unhealed compound fractures, osteomyelitis and wounds with long-established infections. for Dr. A. Everyone in Cedar Rapids and Marion is urged to call the gas company and supply the following information: 1. Tell them what gas appliance you hope to obtain first after the war. t. Tell them whether your present gas range is a table-top or a high-oven type; whether it has an oven regulator or not. 3.

State whether your gas water heater is of the sidearm or tank type, an instantaneous type, or the automatic storage type. 4. If you heat with gas, list whether your equipment is of the gas 'conversion type, a gas designed furnace or a gas room heater. 5. Also tell them whether you use a gas refrigerator, a gas laundry stove, or a gas clothes dryer.

Small amounts of the purest obtainable penicillin have been used to make basic studies of its chemical with a view learning just hat it is and how acts, with the hope of bemg able eventually to produce it by chemical means.

These production and research problems are holding up release of penicillin for public use. A War Production order now limits its use to the armed forces. The sulfas and penicillin foreshadow the third great step in germ warfare. The first was Pasteurs demonstration that bacilli cause diseases. The second Was Paul Ehrlichs magic bullet, the arsenic that cured syphilis and started chemotherapy.
