Page 2 rattleboro Reformer Monday, September 24, 1984 tv Search on for killers of Jay couple Most of the half-dozen chalets near the Hanels home are frequented only on weekends, townspeople said. They said it was not ususual that gunshots were not noticed because hunters frequent the area and bear season has just started. Both of the Hanels are from Montreal and were married three years ago, about the same time Roland Hanel sold out of a Montreal plastic company, friends said. They said he had been a part-time Jay resident for the past 20 years. The Hanels were avid skiers and tennis players who enjoyed the privacy of their remote chalet, located in the community of 300 people just 15 miles from the Canadian border, friends said.

JAY (UPI) Police Sunday were still searching for clues in the 'cold-blooded killing of a Jay man and woman who died of nearly a dozen gunshot wounds each at their isolated chalet near the Canadian border, authorities said. They were shot about 11 times each, State Depiity Chief Medical Examiner Paul Morrow said. Police said they have no suspects, have not located a weapon nor determined a motive for the killing of Ronald Hanel, 49, and his second wife The number of gunshot wounds is unusual and I can't tell if they were fired from a semiautomatic in rapid succession or whether they were single shots from a handgun, Morrow said. He said the Hanels had been dead at least 24 hours before a friend found them Thursday afternoon. Orleans County States Attorney Phillip White said the cold blooded killing marked fourth and fifth homocides in 16 months in the sparsely populated county.

White said Hanels body was found in the living room of the chalet and his wifes in the kitchen. Gunshot wounds were the only marks on the bodies, and it appeared the Hanels had died in separate rooms, Morrow said. An autopsy revealed Hanel suffered gunshot wounds to the arm, leg, back and head and his wife to both sides of her body, head, chest and abdomen, he said. News In Brief Bennington hospital undergoing changes BENNINGTON (UPI) Putnam Memorial Hospital next month will get a new name and a new financial structure as part of a corporate reorganization plan aimed at protecting its wealthy endowment fund, hospital president Robert Stout has said. The hospital will be called Southwestern Vermont Medical Center and Putnam Health Care Corp.

will serve as the parent company, Stout said. The reorganization will split the hospital into several smaller corporations in an effort to keep the Hospital Data Council, a health cost watchdog group created by the Legislature two years ago, from scrutnizing Putnams endowment fund, Stout said. The fund is one of the wealthiest in the state. Another aim of the plan is to help the hospital get maximum reimbursement for Medicare and Medicaid patients, and free up the endowment fund to pay for patient bills not covered by federal programs, Stout said. Caricature of Kunin to appear in magazine MONTPELIER (UPI) An international readership will get a glimpse this week at perhaps not the most flattering image of Democratic gubernatorial candidate Madeleine Kunin- The Sept.

24 issue of Time magazine includes a caricature of Kunin sketched by noted caricaturist David Levine, who has drawn five Time cover portraits. Do readers know who Madeleine Kunin Probably not, unless they live in Vermont, Time said. But whether they know her or not, Levine said Kunin run for governor against Republican John Easton places her under the gun just like other politicians. Politicians should be jumped on as often as possible, Levine said. Record scarecrow is in the works ST.

ALBANS (UPI) The man who dreamed up the worlds biggest pancake, snowman, and ice cream sundae has plans to construct the worlds largest scarecrow in St. Albans next month. Jim Hiltons latest scheme will also mark the end of his five-year tenure as director of the St. Albans Recreation Department. Hiltcn said he will step down to pursue a career in public relations.

His final project, a 61-foot scarecrow, will be built and burned over the course of two days beginning Oct. 26. The scarecrow, which will be 45 feet higher than the current record-holder, will be stuffed with leaves and held up by telephone poles, he said.
