The series of 40 half-hour programs will be televised on WBZ- TV (Channel 4) Saturdays, 1.00 to 1.30 p.m., beginning June 10. Group will syndicate the series nationally and also make It available for classroom use. The videotaped.

series is produced by Group in cooperation with the University of Pennsylvania, and originates from the University Museum in Philadelphia. "How It Happened (the story of archaeology)" covers the vast scope of archaeology including man's dimly understood beginnings in the Ice Age; the ancient cultures of the Middle East, Greece, Rome, China, India and Africa; the majestic but barbaric civilizations of Mexico and Central and South America; and the modern primitives who today still live in the Stone Age. Announcement of the new series was made by Larry H. Israel, i Westinghouse Broadcasting Station Group. Dr.

Froelich Rainey, director of the University Museum in Philadelphia, is host on the programs to more than two dozen leading archaeologists and anthropologists. On the June 10 premiere telecast, "What Is Archaeology?" Part Dr. Loren Eiseley, profes- sor of anthropology and the history of science, and curator of the Early Man Section of the University Museum, traces the growth of archaeology from its beginnings in Europe during the Renaissance, with emphasis on Britain and its Homan remnant to the Rosetta Stone, to the Old Testament Country, the latter generated by interest in establishing the Bible's authenticity. Other series' guests include Dr. Samuel Kramer.

Clark Research Professor of Assyriology; Dr. Carleton Coon, curator of general anthropology. University of Pennsylvania; Dr. Machteld Met- link, professor of archaeology and director of research in Anatolia for Brvn Mawr College; and Dr. Alfred Kidder anthropologist, expert on American Indians and assistant director of the University Museum.

The programs utilize motion picture film, slides and photographs as well as many ancient objects unearthed by the archaeologists at their excavation sites. Aimed specifically at adults, "How It Happened (the story of archaeology)" is geared to provide commercial television viewers residing in some of the country's major markets with educational fare which otherwise might be available only in academic classrooms. The archaeology series represents part of a continuing endeavor by Group to cooperate with the nation's leading educational institutions by devoting the broadcaster's resources, facilities and creative manpower to television productions presenting different facets of education, ranging from in-schooi instruction to on-thc-job training..
