Brown. During the Trojan war the Greek army was delayed while Achilles, son of Peleus and Thetis, was trained to become its leader, according a prophesy that Troy would never fall unless Achilles led the battle against it. However, an oracle had declared he would fall in the war against Troy. When he was born his mother dipped him in the River Styx to safeguard him against the perils of war, which made him invulnerable except on his heel by which she held him. Here Louis Jambor has painted the young Achilles receiving a manly education from the Centaur, Chiron.

The painting is nearest the balcony on the left interior wall of the theater. Photo by Lewis R. Brown. In this panel, located nearest the balcony on the right Interior wall of the theater, Louis Jambor has ddk picted Bacchus, god of the theater and also of wine, descending from his leopard-chariot, in the presence df Ariadne, later his wife. The pictuie, with its background of woodland and meadow and bunch of grapes in th foreground is from a noted painting.

Very few buildings Brattleboro have murals painted directly on the wall. Only onf building has them painted by an artist of international reputation. When the Latchis theater opens tonight its patrons Will be privileged to see one more evidence of the rare ability of the Hungarian-torn artist, Louis Jambor. Pew people realize what has been going on so long secrecy at the corner of Main and Plat streets. The execution of these murals has taken weeks, for they have been worked out In accordance with a definite purpose which demands knowledge both of art and the Greek classics.

It was the hope of the Latchis brothers in the beginning that the authentic Greek motif could be worked out by an artist whose handling of the subject would place the work in the list of outstanding murals in this country. In an interview with a Reformer reporter, Mr. Jambor explained that the murals were not only derived from the mythology of Greece, but the very way they were painted on the wall was Greek, in contrast to the Roman fresco method. Mr. Jambor has remained faithful to the Greek art by using a combination of beeswax that fixes the colors and at the same time gives them the appearance of being water colors.

Born In Hungary in 1884, Mr. Jambor told The Reformer reporter of his early boyhood, how he had run away to, art school because his father wanted him to be an architect, and how, after entering the art school, he had earned prizes for original work. Medals and prizes fell his way all during his stay at the Academy of Art at Budapest. Still later he studied at Munich, and after that at Dussel-dorf. He liked Duseeldorf best; there was something about Dusseldorf, he said, that made a man want to paint.

From Budapest to V. 8. Later fn Budapest his work, was in great demand. More prizes fell his way, until in 1922 he received the first prize from the city of Budapest. Mr.

Jambor had arrived. After that he came to America out of extreme exhaustion, planned tp stay only three months for a much needed rest, and is still here. The fact is, he explained, he has had so much to do here that he cant get away. In 1927 he was commissioned to paint the patios of Mrs. J.

P. Donahue (nee Wool worth) in Palm Beach, Fla. He also executed the 26 murals at the Hotel New Yorker, the huge paintings above the proscenium In the Atlantic City auditorium, and at a number of churches, among them St. Gerards at Buffalo, N. St.

Theresas at Providence, R. and St. Sebastians at Middletown, Conn. Be has painted a number of portraits, Including that of Clarence Barbour, president of Brown university; Emory Hunt, former president of Bucknell university; Lord Rothemere of London, and Dr. Henry Foedick of York city.

For his motif at the Latchis Memorial theater, he has taken two Greek myths or legends which he has felt were in the mood and purpose of the theater. His emphasis is on the Apollo and Bacchus myth, with Apollo on left side of the auditorium and Bacchus reigning on the right. Here in brilliant blues, lavenders and pinks (all colors that will not fade because of the particular formula which Mr. Jambor has devised) are scenes direct from the mythology of ages past As one enters No Trouble. Rests Between Commissions. Climbing around scaffolding is strenuous work. Going up and down a tall ladder just for the purpose of changing colors is indeed an arduous task when it is repeated day in and day out.

For this reason a painter of murals must take a considerable rest period between commissions for such work. In his own studio in New York. Mr. Jambor has long taught pupils both mural and portrait work. He states that he has noticed a definite trend in artists, aS well as in people as a whole toward spiritual interests since the World war.

Before the war there was an artificiality in art and in life. He has noticed particularly the development of a strong and original art in America which has a stamp of its own. He feels that this ie very significant.
