Brattleboro Tel. 602 SATURDAY, MARCH 5 (Eastern Standard Time) COUNTY' AGENT NEWS. Authorized Rlterette Station Story with a Moral. Country editors have problems of their own and their own fine devices for solving them. One is indicated by the following fable which is going the rounds of the rural press in the -South just at present: Once upon a time a nickel nurser sent his kid to borrow the neighbors paper and the kid upset a hive of bees and soon was covered with lumps.

His father ran to help him and caught his chin on a clothes line and sprained his back, fell and broke a $25 watch. The clothes pole fell over the car aiid smashed the windshield, and mother, rushing out to see what occasioned all the excitement, upset a five-gallon churn of cream into a basket of kittens, drowning all of them. The electric flatiron burned through the ironing board, setting fire to the house, and firemen, broke all the windows and chopped a hole In the roof. The baby ate a jar of pickles and got cholera morbus and the doctors bill was $15. The daughter ran away with the hired man during the excitement, the dog bit a neighbors kid and the calves ate the tails off of four night shirts on the clothes line.

To the question as to what is bad in bad posture the answer is the inefficient workings of the body and its various parts. Children with a slumping posture tire easily.

Whatever they do costs them an excessive amount of labor, and in consequence they do as little as possible. This in turn Interferes with the proper nutrition of the body, for the circulation of lymph, through which food matter is brought to, and soluble wastes are carried away from the Individual cells, is promoted by muscular movements. Such children, in addition to being inordinately tired, lack appetite, suffer constipation and often are dull in their school work. The child with poor posture is likely to have a flat chest, shoulder blades that stick out, protruding abdomen, sway beck, legs that are out of alignment and weak or fallen arches. If the head Is drooped forward, it interferes with breathing through the nose and with the proper occlusion of the teeth.

When the chest is flat, it is usually also narrow, and thus makes the proper expansion of the lungs difficult, if not Impossible. a When the abdominal wall is flabby and weak, the abdominal organs tend to become displaced. Their proper function is interfered with, and digestion and elimination suffer. Improperly held lower extremities make a child appear and move awkwardly. They induce fatigue and tend to lftnit the childs activities.

The same is true of fallen arches, which, in addition, may sometimes cause a good deni of effort. The child with poor or bad posture is ill and as much in need of medical attention as when he has diseased tonsils or bronchitis. His posture should be studied by a competent physician, and treatment should be prescribed. Nagging will not help his posture, but may ruin his disposition. 4-H NEWS NOTES.

How Many Chicks Should Be Purchased. Article 5. Do not buy more chicks than your stove can take care of. It is uneconomical to brood more than 400 chicks under one stove irregardless of the size of the brooding quarters. Too many chicks to a stove results in uneven growth, slow feathering, smothering, overheating, dirty and wet litter, toe and tail picking.

Although the time of year influences somewhat the number of chicks to place under one hover it is poor economy to place as high as 1,000 chicks to a stove that is rated as having a capacity of that number. Too many chicks to a stove required very frequent cleaning and it is impossible to keep the floor dry after they are several weeks old, particularly when the floor space is limited. The mere congested chicks are the greater the danger for the spread of disease. When it is necessary to confine chicks during early brooding at least one half of a square foot of floor space should be allowed for each chick. A brood of chickens should be thinned to 50 percent of the origjpal number when they are six to seven weeks old.

It is good practice to dispose of any chicks that are small and appear unthrifty, at the very early stage of brooding, A chick that does not develop and shows no indications of beginning to feather, uudoubtly never will develop and should be disposed of. and station lists subject to change. wfbl whec wgr wlbz wean Wdre wnac wore wpg wcau whp wjas wlbw wmal wcao wtar wdbj wade whk wcah wbig wtoc wqam wdbo wdae wxyz wspd 9:00 Band Concert Also wkbw waab wcau whk wxyz 9:30 Lambert and Hillpot Also whec wkbw wlbz wean wdre waab wcau whp wjas wmal wcao wade whk wXyz wspd 9:45 Arthur Jarrett Also woko wfbl whec wkbw wlbz wean wdre waab wore wpg wcau whp wjas wlbw wmal wcao wtar wdbj wade wkrc wcah wkbn wbt wbig wtoc wdbo wdae wxyz wspd efrb 10:00 Public Affairs Institute Also woko wfbl whec wkbw wlbz wean wdre waab wore wpg wcau whp wjas wlbw wmal wcao wtar wdbj wwva wade wkrc wcah wkbn wbt wbig wtoc wdbo wdae wxyz wspd 10:30 Shilkret Orch. Country, Boys and Girls Need Play. No children under the sun need play and proper provision for play more than country boys and girls. A farm provides ample work for little hands to do and the distance between farms and the scarcity of children of equal age make play difficult. Work in the fields does not take the place of play as some people seem to think, for while it does build up a sound body it does not quicken and increase the powers of the mind. Physical work does not age a man (or a boy) as Much as mental neglect." These words express quite well the underlying philosophy that leads the 4-H clubs to feature camps, tours and general get-togethers like the Round Up as part of the 4-H program.

Baby Chick Orders. All orders for baby chicks must be received at the Farm Bureau office by March 15 in order to receive the discount offered by the breeders. The New England Quality label has been used quite extensively on maple sugar and syrup for the last few years.

These who have used the label find that It is quite a help in selling because it designates their product as to grade and quality. Consumers who have been misled by blends or inferior products will be glad to know that they have the protection of standard quality goods under the label. The label is used along with the regular label simply to designate the grade and State. It does not state weight or measure of the package. Application for the use of the quality label, should be made to the bureau of markets, department of agriculture.

March has come with its windy days and spring forecasts. Every succeeding day is more tantalizing. To be out and enjoying it as much as possible is the desire of every homemaker.

Many times during days like these one thinks of gloves. Quite unnecessary. Protect your hands with something, however, and prevent them from becoming weather beaten in-appearance. Here is a recipe for a home-mode hand lotion whidh if made according to directions should give satisfactory results: Two ounces 'bayr rum. 2 ounces alcohol.

2 ounces glycerine, 2-3 ounce quince seed, 1 dram tincture benzoin. Pour one pint boiling water over quince seed and simmer twenty minutes. Strain through cloth something firm. Add this to the other ingredients and the lotion is made. Shake before using.

Superheterodyne RADIO SUNDAY, ffiARCh 6 (Eastern Standard Time) Garden Clubs Active. The garden clubs are beginning to make their plans for the years work, as March is the month for making garden plans and ordering seeds. Seeds are offered club members at a liberal discount, provided the orders are received before March .15, and all clubs are urged to pool their orders and take advantage of the low prices to be obtained in this way. All garden club members are expected to plan their garden this year to supply the family with an adequate supply of fresh vegetables and the necessary canned supply for the winter. With the small income of many families, there Is a greater no-Hi to secure as large a part of the roily living from the garden a possible and the club members can greatly help by properly planning their gardens.

Brattleboro March 9 at 1 30 p. m. An understanding of the economic changes taking place and the probably trend of prices wllfbe of value to anyone at this time, and should prove especially interesting to club leaders. Maple Products Outlook. Due to the very low production during 1931, the carryover of No.

1 and fancy syrup is low. There is, however, a normal carryover of No. 2 and No. 3 syrup. About 1,300,000 gallons of syrup have ordinarily been purchased by syrup and sugar manufacturers each year.

The largest single buyer or maple products who has normally purchased about 900.000 gallons of the commercial crop probably will not purchase over 100,000 gallons during 1932. Buyers are likely to be insufficient to handle the crop during 1932 and if the crop is normal in volume, prices will be considerably lower than those prevailing in 1931. Due to relatively low prices of other farm products, it is expected that there will be a general effort to produce all the maple products possible. Imports will doubtless be heavy this year because of the difference in value of United States and Canadian money. TAX FREE!
