Aihttb H.Cribanr June 13, 1971 This is the 1904 Fourth of July parade in Livermore when Mae Richards was Goddess of Liberty The Knave Continued from Page 21 competing against cowboys. She was Manuela Lopez of Modesto. There are names among the committeemen for that Fourth of July fete that were active In orgah-Izing the rodeo years later. Chair man was T. K.

Knox with James W. Clarke as secretary. Also David McDonald, Daniel J. Murphy, Theodore Comer, William Lowcn-thal and F. Mathiesen.

David McDonald was grand marshal of the street parade and among his aides were Dennis F. Bernal, Rod Fallon, Frank Fen non, A. W. Feidler, Peter Iloare, Thomas Hawley, Marion Horton, William Martin, Ed Merrillo, Frank Mulqueeney and E. K.

Strobridge. Postmaster Knox was president, of the day, the Hon. J. J. Allen orated, Myrtle Harp directed the choir, and Mrs.

Ora Winter recited the Declaration of Independence. Dennis Bernal doubled in the role of Floor Director at the Grand Ball that night, assisted by Dan Murphy, E. J. Sweeney, Dave McDonald, George Galway, Bill Mulqueeney and A. W.

Feidler. Mae Richards must have made a hit She Was also selected as Columbia In the New Years Day parade later, and led the grand march to the New Years Day Hall at Sweeneys Opera House. ROMANCE came for Livermores Goddess of Liberty and Miss Columbia at the roadside mailbox in front of her home one day. She was picking up the mall when the stage went by. Among the passengers on the stage was James Edward McFeely who tipped his hat and made a complimentary remark.

I thought him fresh, she says. Six months later they met again at a dance and were introduced. Mae and Jim were married at Stockton. He was the mechanical superintendent at the Treadwell plant Hey made their home at Tesla until 1911 when floods washed out the railroad and brought doom to Carnegie. Meanwhile, two babies had arrived for the McFeelys.

Elkabeth was the first bom and is now Mrs. McFeely. There are those still living in Oakland who remember him as superintendent of the old Judson Iron Works in Emeryville. Like Jenkins Richards, the McFeelys emigrated to America and came west via the foundry and mining states on the eastern seaboard of America. Mrs.

Mac Richards McFeely might well be the oldest remaining pioneer of the Tesla countryside. Her interest in the Oakland Zoo at Knowland State Park Is heightened by the marriage of granddaughter Susan Elizabeth to Lutz Ruhe who has charge of the zoo animals along with his brother IieP ner. The two Ruhe brothers are renowned for their skill in handling wild animals and are currently at work establishing a Safari Country in the vicinity of Coarse Gold in Madera County. Whether 89-year-old Mae McFee-iys affinity for the wild kingdom she knew as a girl in the Livermore hills plays any part in the Ruhe brothers success can only be in her mind a coincidence. They worked with wild animals most of their lives.

My granddaughter Susan Ruhe is fortunate to be similarly attracted. -THE KNAVE Elkabeth DUrso with whom Mrs. McFeely now makes her home in Oaklands Wellington Avenue. Mrs. D'Urso taught schooL After 40 years of teaching in Oakland she became assistant superintendent of Alameda County Schools, but has since retired.

Fred McFeely, born in 1910, died in 1967. After the McFeelys moved to Oakland, Jim worked for the Oakland Fire Department, eventually taking the examination for Superintendent of Engines. He held that job until retirement, his headquarters being at 51st Street and Telegraph Avenue. McFeely School in Oakland is named for Susan M. McFeely who spent half a century in the service of Oakland schools.

She wfas the sister-in-law of Mae McFeely. Her teaching career began in Stanislaus County in 1883. TESLAS history as a booming mining center in the Corral Hollow neighborhood during the waning years of the 1890s and the first decade of the present century appears to owe a great deal to the Jenkins Richards family and the union with a descendant of Frederick Patrick McFeely.
