for the AI he Times-Mail, Bedford, Indiana, Tuesday, June 14, 1994 Local AT YOUR SERVICE SUSAN BURGESS Times-Mail Staff Writer Seeks scenic shirt QUESTION I would like to purchase a T-shirt with Bedford scenes, perhaps one featuring the local stone quarries maybe the Empire Quarry. My grandson in Florida wanted something from Indiana, but he has enough IU shirts and I don't think a shirt with the Greystone Hotel on it would mean anything to him. Would one of your readers have or be able to make those? I could use at least three. J.D., Bedford. ANSWER None of the three Bedford businesses I contacted Kinser's Custom Printing, Good Sports Sporting Goods, or Four Season Sports T-shirt stocked or made any of type the of sporting scenes Bedford area.

You might approach one of those businesses about the feasibility of designing such a shirt. If I no business wants to take on the venture or no kind and knowledgeable readers come up with other solutions, I'm afraid you're out of luck. Charitable choices QUESTION I received something in the mail asking me to volunteer for a cancer drive in the Lawrence County area. The name of the group is the Cancer Center in Topeka, Kansas. Could you find out about the organization? A.G., Bedford.

ANSWER American Cancer Society Media Relations spokesperson, Shelly Koglin, suggested that you contact her to provide her with some addition information specifically, a more complete name. She explained that there are a large number of cancer organizations, some legitimate and some not, with names similar to the one you provided. Contact Ms. Koglin at the American Cancer Society at 1-800-227-2345 or phone her directly at 317-872- 4432. When considering donating time or money to any charitable organization, Koglin said i it would be wise to request a copy of the group's annual report for a clearer picture of the way it spends its money.

She also suggested you read the fine print to see who is actually responsible for the mailing. Some fraudulent groups have been known to resume their old practices under new names. Another organization that may be able to assist you is the National Charities information Bureau (NCIB) in New York. The group can provide you with i its "'Wise Giving which includes a listing of approved charities and an explanation of its nine NCIB standards. Because I could find no information about the Cancer Center in my NCIB literature, I suggest you contact the NCIB at 212- 929-6300 for more information.

Bad chemistry QUESTION My mother is having a problem with a neighbor who is spraying some sort of chemical on the trees that divide their property. The property line is in dispute and the neighbor, who believes the trees are on his property, is trying to destroy them with some kind of spray. The chemicals have made my mother sick she's been to a doctor and an allergist and these chemicals have affected her grandchildren as well. They have some blisters on their throats and one child's gums are, purplish. I've called the Health Department, the EPA, Soil Conservation, and a lawyer, but everyone says there's nothing that can be done until we find out the type of chemical being used.

One agency said that the neighbor would have to stop spraying if my mother began using an old well instead of county water. I'd like to know who could tell us what chemical is being used and also if anyone knows of someone who does well work. A Bedford reader. ANSWER I'd suggest you contact Jim Parker of the Lawrence County Solid Waste District at 275-4178. If he is unable to be of assistance, he should be able to point you in the right direction.

You might also have some luck by calling Dave Redman of the Lawrence County Purdue Cooperative Extension office at 275-4623. He's also a very good resource person.
