Indiana soldiers served in ipany of the principal battles, and their officers won fame from the engagements. Among the battles were the Battle of Palo Alto, Rescaca de la Palma, Monterrey and Buena Vista. The National Archives has records for the Mexican War. In order to get data on a soldier from this war, you should know the state from which he served and also the organization. The Civil War, or The War of the Rebellion, lasted from April 19, 1860, to August 20, 1866.

Indiana was in bad financial shape when the war began; it had no credit and no money in the treasury. On top of this, its newly elected governor resigned to become a U.S. Senator. The new Oliver P. Morton, was pro-Union and strongly anti-slavery.

The state had to borrow large amounts of money from wealthy men in the state in order to equip soldiers for the war. Soldiers from Indiana who joined the Union Army totaled 197,649 and many of these men fought in the hardest campaigns of the war, especially in the South and the West. They served in the armies of Generals Grant, Hooker, McClellan, Sheridan, Sherman, Thomas and others. Undoubtedly, some mep also joined the Confederate Army, since some people in Indiana Sympathized with the South. No battles were fought in Indiana, but it was invaded" in July 1863.

At that time, Gep. John Morgan and his Raiders swept across southern Indiana as far as Salem. They were met by local militia who gathered to send them packing." The "Raiders" rode off into Ohio, leaving Indiana relatively untouched by the war, but with many exciting tales of "Morgans Raiders. At the beginning of the war, in April 1861, Camp Morton, a military camp, was set up in Indianapolis. Here the states soldiers were trained before being sent off to battle.

The camp became a prison camp for Confederate soldiers in 1862, under the direction of Richard Owens of New Harmony fame. The camp, known for Its humane treatment of prisoners, was located north of present downtown Indianapolis. Civil War records are many from books about each states role In the war to the many records in the National Archives. Among the -best Archives records are the service and the pension records. Widows pension records can also be surprisingly helpful and full of In order to locate the correct records for your particular soldier, you will need his name, place of residence, service organization and rank.
