TEAM STATISTICS INDIVIDUAL STATISTICS RUSHING BEDFORD N.L. NORTH By BOB BRIDGE Sunday HcnM-Ttana Bedford North Lawrence entered Saturday night's high school football game against Bloomington North, with a 1-2 record. Terry Willoughbys Stars were ranked 127th, with a 57.06 power rating in Jeff Sagarins weekly computations. North also entered the non-cluster contest with a 1-2 slate. Dick Ranard's Cougars were ranked 124th with a 57.66 rating.

The elements were right for a stalemate. And sure enough, after 48 minutes of defensive dogfighting, the score was knotted 7-7. WILLOUGHBY, WHO was less than satisfied with the way the Stars played during regulation time, was even more disappointed about what happened in the overtime. Former BNL running back Mike Wykoff, who transferred to North after guiding the Stars to a 14-13 victory in 1983, bulled bis way into the end zone from 2 yards out In the overtime period to give the Cougars a dramatic 13-7 come-from-behind victory. We made enough mistakes tonight to lose several ballgames, Willoughby said.

We didn't deserve to win the game. Maybe they didnt deserve to win it, but it sure looked like the Stars were going to come away with their second victory. THATS ONE of several plays Mallory isnt looking forward to seeing hen he studies game films.

Another Is the 47-yard touchdown run by would-be punter Paul Calhoun, who found himself with the football and unattended. Mallory took the blame off the players on that one. That was probably as much a coaching error as anything. Mallory said. The players were doing what they were supposed to do.

W'e worked bard on returns this week. We wanted them to hit their men and just nde them out. They had their backs to the punter and it cost us." HELL SEE THAT one. and other Saturday horrors, hts dreams for a while, but be also spend time looking at each one of them tn the film room It's all there tn black and white, and shows up." ByBOBHAMMEL Siaday HcnM-Ttm Only In Kentucky could they understand the unexpected depths Indiana hit for half a game Saturday afternoon. Only In Kentucky, where the commonwealths beloved basketball team shot .091 in the last hall of a Final Four game to die in historic ignominy last March. Indianas football team had that kind of all-thumbs stretch in falling behind Kentucky 31-0 by halftime in a Hoosier home opener that played out to a 48-14 Wildcat victory.

THIS WAS A HOOSIER team that spent long, hard hours working on mistakes last week. It had 'em all down, and used, by halftime. The Hoosiers fumbled the ball away on a pass play, and on a rushing play. They surrendered the football another time when punter Chuck Raz-mic went to one knee to catch a low snap, killing the play before he could get a foot into the ball. On defense, they had an awful time making tackles stick.

Once, they even lost track of a man split end Joe Phillips, who raised a hand to let quarterback Bill Ransdell know he really was as open as he looked, then took the surprised Ransdell's pass and dashed up the sidelines on a 38-yard touchdown play. Mental mistakes, co-captain and linebacker Joe Fitzgerald said. We cant play against anybody till we get those out of our football. snap on a punt thats about as basic as you can get. Just cut our own throat.

WE PROBABLY DU) do some things better ui the second half. Well just go back to work and practice things to make us better. That's the wav were going to build this program. Thats all you can do. Sigler also said he was unprepared for the one-sided game that resulted.

I thought we were really prepared. be said. We knew they were going to come tn and try to run the ball, which Is what they did. But you're surprised any time you go in at halftime down 31-6." I thought we had quite a few who did. Thats what Im looking for. I'm going to get some people with pride and plug aw ay. We made some glaring errors. Everything tended to snowball and got us tn a hole right away.

We did some theres no excuse for. Its Just so irking when you see that unsoundness. IT SEEMS LIKE we get shook. That first half I cant believe the things we did. and then we allowed it to mushroom on us.

Mallory was asked if the 62 start shocked him. Naturally I was hoping wed be better. he said. I didnt know what to expect. One of the toughest questions to answer alw ays is hat you're going to do that first year." After a week of what he called good Intensity" preparing lor Kentucky.

I expected us to be better than we were. he said. Our tackling was lousy we Just didnt wrap up We botched an assignment on that long touchdown pass that's Just ridiculous. And going down on one knee to catch a bad Kentucky, Bill Mallory said, "is a good, sound football team. In time, he may consider it less than rationalization to realize that the ildcats impressive 48-M winners over Mallorys first Indiana team Saturday were much less than -good or sound Just two years ago.

when Jerry Gaibome was starting to work bis alma mater's football program. For now, Mallory's only thinking Is about the unsound moments that his Indiana football team has bad In Its 0-2 beginning this year. Claiborne endured an 6-10-1 start in his rebuilding project, and some the early departers In Saturday's crowd of 44.J89 no doubt made predictions of a 1904 Hoosier fate that would make 6-161 sound good. MALLORY IS AIMING at the future but not giving up on this year. Ive bad to do this before.

We're going to do everything we can to salvage Uus season. We're going to come right back and plug and plug and plug and plug until it comes our way." Abandoning this still-young season to point for the future bat a prospect Mallorys team seems ready for. either especially ha seniors. I hope not, tree safety Chris da. Inside linebacker Mark Wetler and outside linebacker Tom Hendrickson were among Hoosiers ho left the game ith leg problems.

PHYSICAL PROBLEMS werent the chief concern of senior linebacker and cocaptain Joe Fitzgerald. We've made more mental mistakes than we know what to do with. Fitzgerald said, enough for about four football teams. He indicated be would like to exercise his captaincy to point the way to Improvement I'm going to talk to coach Mallory about what we can do." he said. But I don't know.

If was physical. 1 could see doing more about it as captain. Its hard to get Inside someone's head. MALLL0RY TRIED to get tn there at halftime, the game already all but Kentucky-clinched with the score 31-6. Coach said to go out the second half like It was nothing to nothing.

Junior tailbac Bobby How ard said. We Just wanted to see what we could do with our game plan. We thought we could play with them, and we would hare, without all the turnovers. Mallory said he Just told them to 4 Sigler said. Ive got nine more games and I'm done.

1 hope we can gel going. 1 thought we'd be 2-6 right now, but thats neither here nor there. Were not. and we've got to get It turned around tha week. You've got to be mentally tough just to play the game of football, and coach Mallory te one of the mentally-toughest people I know.

there were lots of people wearing Ire packs. The toll from the game may go deeper than the score, although that wont be known for a while. Middle guard Dare Zyz- 0.
