Allensworth, born a slave in 1842 in Kentucky, served with the Umon Army during the Civil War and rose to become the ranking black commissioned officer in the army In the early 1900 he founded Allensworth, Tulare County, an a 1 1 -b 1 a town which grew to several hundred persons. Today some of the descendants of the original settlers still live in the San Joaquin Valley town and a movement is underway to have the site tleclared a historical monument. Capt. Shorey was one of the first black men who achieved a masters license to com-" mand ships of unlimited tonnage. The S.

Department of Commerce panted him a license in 1897 and the captain commanded manv voyages on whaling steamships out of San -Francisco. BEASLEY Wrote for The Tribune born Feb 22, 1841. Pennsylvania and started his career 20 years later in an Francisco working as a draftsman and then a lithographer for the C. C. Kuchel firm The outstanding woik of the Kuchel firm was a series of views depicting cities and mining towns California and Nevada Brown is the noted artist of many of these views, including those of Santa Rosa, Fort Churchill and Virginia City. Between 1861 and 1864 he traveled extensively through the Comstock, a gold and silver mining area near Reno in Nevada.

Kuchel died in 1865, leaving his widow the business at 543 Clay St Brown continued to work for the firm and 1867 he bought the company and named it Brown and Co. The fast and inexpensive method of mass producing impressions ai a popular market for a variety of illustrations, bill heads, scrip-bills, stock certificates, diplomas, sheet music and maps In 1869 Brown moved his GRAFTON T. BROWN Black artist of the West States Engineers, the city civil engineering department and various other companies. The museums permanent display on Black History includes three persons who played'prominent roles California's past.

One of these persons, Delilah L. Beasley, was a writer for The Tribune. From 1926 through 1933 the talented black wnter wrote a column which carried civic and religious news of the black community: She is most noted for writing the book, The Negro Trail-Blazers of California, published 1919 and reprinted in 1968 The museum display contains an original copy of the 317-page book about black men and women who pioneered California. Bom Cincinnati, Ohio, Miss Beasley was a staff writer for the Cleveland Gazette at 12 years old. Three years later she wrote a column in' the Sunday issue of the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Later she 'studied joumahsm under the publisher of the Colored Catholic Tribune in Cincinnati, After the death of her par- inal complaint at that time. Pnce, 50, was found lying on the bed in the master bedroom of his home at 462 Florence Drive, Lafayette on Dec. 5 by. sheriffs deputies who were dispatched after his wife, Rayma 52, had called Dist. Atty. William O'Malley, saying her husband was dead.
