Which is what happens in the Hively family. Redcap Louis Laurant has been at Grand Central Station since 1923.

He admits having visited Pennsylvania Station several times but will not comment on it because he never knocks competitors. He says a redcaps job is four-fifths public relations and one-fifth sweat. TV Portraits Ralph Story Theres a tall Story roaming the halls of CBS Television City these days six feet, two inches to be exact and he answers to the name of Ralph. Hes the moderator on CBS Televisions new and novel quiz series, What Do You Have in Common? Rangy, affable Story, whose voice is a familiar one to thousands of early-bird Southern California radio listeners, via KNX, CBS-owned station in Los Angeles, is an ex-World War II fighter pilot who now confines his fighting to the traffic-jam-med Los Angeles freeways. He was first heard on KNX on Valentines Day of 1949 with an early-morning program of news, weather and temperature reports and recorded music.

Hailing from Kalamazoo, Ralph attended Western Michigan College and aspired to a- career of teaching speech and English. After a brief contact with a Kalamazoo radio station he landed a job on a Grand Rapids station as a staff announcer. He soon established himself in the Furniture City, then moved on to Buffalo, N.Y., where he enjoyed equal success. World War II interrupted his radio work. Being a licensed pilot, Ralph joined the Air Force as an instructor.

Later, Story became a P-51 pilot in England where he completed 63 fighter-escort missions over the continent before VE Day. Upon his separation from the service in 1945, Story returned to Buffalo and joined station WGR as a disc jockey-announcer. He held this position until he became morning host over KNX in 1949. During the run of his early morning show. Story developed the now-famous Top of the Morning format of down-to-earth discussion of contemporary events, along with music.

As a result of this program, he was sent half-way around the world on a material-gathering flight, co-sponsored by CBS Radio and the Military Air Transport Service. While on this trip, Ralph interviewed Californians away from home, both military and civilian. The tape-recorded interviews were flown back to Hollywood to be used on Top of the Morning. This series of interviews won Story and the program a number of radio awards among them the Ohio State University Award. TV Portraits Bob Cunningham Back in 1936 Bob Cunningham, who helps Welcome Travelers, was program director of a station in Omaha.

In that year the Republican River in Nebraska flooded thousands of miles of farmland, creating a national e-mergency. Cunningham was called upon to do a remote broadcast from the flooded area and, with one engineer along, did an exceptional job 'of reporting. When he returned to his desk in Chicago, there was a wire waiting from CBS Radio in Chicago asking him to come to work tor WBBM. After three years there, Cunningham was transferred to CBS Radio headquarters in New York as a production supervisor. In 1941, he returned to CBS Radio in Chicago as Supervisor of Announcers.
