Havelock Ellis, 80. world famous on sex psychology, died Saturday at Hintlesham, near Ipswich, it was announced today. Until just before his death, Ellib gpent most of his time trying to solve the personal problems of the many people who wrote to him.

He was able to talk only a few minutes at a time befiause of a throat ail jnent, but his intellectual vitality was unimpaired. Ellis' later years, though he was honored in many countries, were embittered because his master work, studies in the psychology of had been banned in Great Britain. It was published in the United States a few years ago in four volumes, but in Great Britain it could be obtained only clandestinely, though the British museum had a copy of it--in German. Writing Was Relaxation It would have been possible, recent years, for the work to have been published legayy here. But Ellis so resented the fact that for most of the 40 years after he wrote it, it was regarded as undesirable, that he refused stoutly to authorize a British edition Ellis retired a year ago to his cottage, Cherry Ground, at Hintlesham.

Bronzed, white haired and with a venerable snowy beard, he spent much of his day on a lawn, writing in long hand as he sat tn the sun. "I am an intellectual Aunt Sally," he told someone on his 80th birthday. "I must go on writing. That Is my relaxation. It keeps me alive Recalled Early Work Before he was 20 Ellis had decided to devote his life to the problem of sex He studied at St.

Thomas' hospital here, not to become a doctor but to study sex problems. He first wrote "Man and Woman "When I look back now I can't Imagine how I had the cheek to do all the things I did," he confessed years later. Made Sex Respectable "There is no impulse the human heart which can not be transformed into truth or beauty or love," he used to say. He was an early advocate of divorce reform, an advocate of marriage for priests and a student of genius He studied family trees of 1,000 British men of genius, and found that 16 per cent were sons of clergymen, seven of lawyers and three of doctors Parents most were from 30 to 34 years of age. It has been said of Ellis that he made sex respectable.
