Besides his phenomenal business success A Sagebrush Heritage describes Bens love to his large family. The indexed book is illustrated with an abundance of previously unpublished photographs and is a real contribution to western Americana on two frontiers: the history of several Nevada mining camps prior to 1900, and just before the turn-of-the-centu-ry account of family life and business development in Oakland and its neighboring communities.

When the Edwards family first arrived in the Easy Bay they made their home on College Avenue, but when young Tom had a narrow escape with a College Avenue street car Ben decided to move. He bought a large Victorian home on a three acre site just out of the city limits in the Claremont district of Berkeley, bordering Oakland. It was spring of 1907, the story goes. The post office address of the big Victorian dwelling eventually wound up as 68 Hillcrest Road, Berkeley, but most of the. three acres was in Oakland.

Nearby at 6058 Ross Street in Oakland was the home of Bens parents Thomas and Catherine Edwards. The last Ben Edwards home was at 106 Ross Circle, a street developed by Edwards when he subdivided his land. This was all a part of the old J. Ross Browne estate. Lorena Edwards Meadows who gives us this account of her father was born in Candelaria, Nevada.

She is a 1919 graduate of Oaklands Technical High School, graduating from the University of California in 1923. She is married to Earl Meadows, prominent El Cerrito home builder. Her keen interest in her heritage 'led her to spend a decade in exhaus-, tive research, and. she quotes extensively from her fathers own writings. OVER in Walnut Creek a turn-of-I the-century home was converted into a museum last month in order to provide -residents of that region with a look-see as to how early residents of Contra Costa County lived.

An invocation was made at the dedication ceremonies by the Rev. Sheldon Rankin. Mrs. Isabel Brubaker, president emeritus of the Walnut Creek Historical Society gave a brief history of the area, followed by acknowledgements by Mayor John W. Clemson.

The address of welcome was idelivered by Adele Laine, present president of the Walnut Creek Historical Society. Chairman Earl Wightman of the Shadelands Historical Museum Advisory Board served as Master of Ceremonies. The newly dedicated museum is in the historic 70-year-old Shadelands Ranch dwelling at 2600 Ygnacio Valley Road. Volunteer helpers on the project included rs: Harry Moran, Mrs. John Clemson, Mrs.
