'15llslHEIalagE RAGU' FOODS COUPON As the title would indicate, this is a highly unusual cook book. It is a recipe collection that delightfully startles the senses with pop-art photographs, line drawings that are amusing as well as whimsical, and presentation of recipes in a refreshing and innovative format. The authors philosophy of happy involvement with food as a part of life is apparent. Each page of the Feastiary is a surprise, and is different from all the others. There are photographs of family and friends, others of places visiitd, copies of letters and recipes reproduced to show the original handwriting.

Printed matter and photographs are often arranged in offbeat collage fashion. Recipes are from many sources. They in- elude family favorites, those collected from different parts of the world, and the authors own creations. Emphasis is on natural foods and basic recipes; there is little reliance on pre-packaged food or mixes. Variety is everpresent, ranging from desserts as familiar as Apple Brown Betty, to less well known dishes such as Beef Carbonnade.

Arrangement of chapters is by subjects which the author considers special. Theres one on Lemons, a fruit which she describes as a delight to all the senses. Another on Rainy Day Food is devoted mostly to spicy baked desserts; make some sticky buns and let their rich brown smell float through the house, is the advice. There is a chapter each on foods for the four seasons spring, summer, fall and winter. The winter season brings enormous hunger, for which the food must be abundant, hearty, filling.

One appealing chapter, Fat Food for Lean Times, has suggestions for trimming dollars from the food budget while adding to cooking pleasure. One of the authors pennywise food habits is to go the potatoes and eggs route, especially if she can buy the potatoes quantity. Another budget-trimmer is experimentation with, Chinese cookery which tends to be quite economical, and offers an interesting cuis-ine. The Feastiary represents an enthusiastic, yet practical, approach to food preparation. If inspiration is needed to regard culinary achievement as an art form, this, is it.
