Jones, said by LSU coaches to have the strongest passing arm i(i the schools history, was sharp in directing the Tigers four touchdown drives. It was Pacifics second loss of the season, both to nationally ranked teams. Jones connected with split receiver Jimmy LeDoux for an 11-yard touchdown pass and later hit tight end Brad Boyd with another 11-yard scoring play. LSUs other points came on a 33-yard field goal by sophomore Rusty Jackson. Pacific startled the partisan LSU crowd of 66,574 by recovering a blocked punt for a touchdown in the.

The chill jbornings have frosted my beans, squash and corn to it frazzle. There is nothing quite so sad looking as a frozen squash plant unless its two plants. Last Sunday we had about as much bird and animal activity in the yard as I can remember. A big old granddaddy Grey Squirrel visited us for most of the day.

He was accompanied by his retinue of Blue Jays they followed him everywhere. The jays and the Squirrels can really go to it af times although this time they were relatively peaceful, I recall one occasion when the squirrel was storing 'food out on the end of the fir branches. Of course, as fast as he would hide hjs goodies the jays Would swipe it. Finally, he got the idea that all was not well and his work was pretty much for nothing. The language this squirrel used was terrible.

He Chased the jays' round and round through the tree $mbs but pever quite managed to catch up with them, ft is a good 'thing this particular squirrel couldnt fly because he would have thoroughly thrashed a few jay birds. In order to survive here in the valley at Tahoe, a squirrel has to be tough to make it. There are lots of eats that just adore squirrels. We have two and sometimes I wish they were elsewhere so we would have more squirrels about. However, when it comes cone eutting time it is just as well that we have the cats, the squirrels get to whittling cones and dont pay much attention to where they drop.

This cone cutting business reminds me of a situation that occurred many years ago when I was deer hunting. A squirrel was busy whacking off cones and didnt realize that I was around. I carefully gathered Up all his cones in a pile right next to an old log. Finally, the Squirrel cut the last cone and announced to the world that he was now going to collect his booty. I was sitting on the log next to the pile of cones perhaps '40 feet from the base of the tree.

The squirrel hit the ground and started for his cones but couldnt find any. I have never seen such a bewildered animal in my life. He frantically searched everywhere but nd cones. Finally, he spotted me and he must have known that I was the culprit because a gave me a terrible scolding. Anyway, I left and from a distance I saw the squirrel find the cone pile.

Guess he is still wondering how he could whittle cones and have them piled up with such accuracy. Sunday we also saw large flocks of Evening Grosbeaks work through the pines in the yard. There were flocks of blackbirds and finchs coming and going all day. Then the band-tailed pigeons appeared upon the scene followed by two chickarees. My two cats almost went wild at the prospect of catching all this food.

I talked rather severely to them and they-went off to bed sulking. Pat Rahbeck, wife of the owner of the Outdoors-man, has been feeding wild ducks by her house and the other evening she had 57 fly in in just a short time. She maintains that they are bunching up earlier than usual. Guess she should know because she has been feeding them for years. She also feeds a bitch coyote and once it brought its lone pup along.

Pat got quite a kick out of the clumsy little fellow. The dogs have found out about the dining table so now the coyote comes later in the evening so as to miss the crowds. Two weeks ago Pat spotted a mountain lion working along in the meadow. Imagine the big cat was out mousing as the meadow is loaded with mice. Just hope someone doesnt spot it and start blazing away.

Kind of nice to have a few of these beasts around. I have had several calls about the Kokanee situation and they are still with us althoughthey are beginning to look rather strange. The males are getting quite hook jawed and are turning sort of a reddish gray. They fight like the very devil though. Incidentally, they can be taken from 6 to almost noon now instead of just the early morning hours.

It will be interesting to see just how many Kokanee make the trip up Taylor Creek this year. All sorts of reports filter in as to the Kokanee population but no one really knows much one way or another. The quantity of fish up Taylor Creek is about the only real measuring device that we have. i- I also want to check on the amount of Brown Trout that rpake it up Taylor Creek this year. It Seems that with all the spawning activity of the Kokanee it would have an adverse affect on the Browns.

Taylor Creek is small and when you get thousands of Kokanee spawning there is hardly room for anything else. Dont expect to catch too many Mackinaw now in Lake Tahoe. They are spawning and have been for a Spell and it seems like they arent much interested in Chasing lures or minnows. Might be a few bachelors around but most of the others are just too occupied. Fishing will pick up later on.
